Do not think it was a bad idea to put him in left field. You would think an athletic shortstop could play the outfield. Saw very few people disagree with that last year.

He hadn't been an "athletic shortstop" for quite awhile though. He came into last year looking like JJ Watt.

Was still playing shortstop, maybe not as good an athlete that he was a few years ago, but no reason to think he couldn't play left.

It's not that different from what many of the people on the board were saying more than two moths ago: the infield is not the same as the outfield; this guy was a shortstop and he has the reactions; he'll have to relearn a few things, but he'll be fine. There was skepticism also, but the analysts now saying that we'll have to wait until the regular season to see how he performs are being silly, covering up for their own lack of understanding. It's obvious that the bar at first base is lower, and he has the skills. The only issue with Ramirez is always the one same: Can he stay healthy? Sorry, but this is bald faced revisionism. Hanley's physique last year and lack of mobility, combined with his seeming apathy about getting better in the outfield, provided more than enough reason to question the viability of the switch to 1b. Just because Hanley has done well it does not mean the question was ill-founded. The vitriol was unfounded, but not the basic question. Part of that was his own personal expectation of what he was supposed to be as a LF (and partly what the team conveyed). I think there was a general trend in opinion towards the end of last season that a 1b move might've been a better one than LF. Certainly, a lot of people questioned his commitment, and reasonably so, but plenty of people were fairly sanguine about the 1b experiment.

Exactly. There's no revisionism because there's nothing to revise. Both opinions were voiced on the board, though neither by me. My only contribution was to point out that the evidence indicated he'd hurt himself playing left field, that he probably tried to play through it, and that it had hurt his game and thus the team. I try to stay away from the motives of others since I can barely figure out why I do things.

Looking forward to Opening Day...on Tuesday. It's supposed to snow on Monday in Cleveland. ...and the sun rises in the East. These two things are on the same wavelength in April. Hopefully, just a few flakes. Current forecast has snow showers ending at least a couple of hours before game time, and then a wind-chill of 24 degrees -- 34 with a 17 mph wind from the north, more or less in from CF.

Going from SS to LF I wonder if Hanley felt left out of the game. Now back at a spot where he gets to talk to other players and has a lot more interaction and involvement i feel his focus well improve. I understand his shoulder was a major issue last year. But i hope the switch makes for a big year.

For some reason, he only played half the game there then went to left with another first baseman brought in. Hazelbaker just struck out looking at a 2-2 pitch in his first ML AB.

They were facing a lefty (Liriano) and their 2 first basemen are left handed, One OFer get hurt and they needed him to get back to his original position.

At the end of the day, I think the team has a responsibility to field the best team they can.
If not for the contract, it is doubtful Sandoval comes borth with the team.

Oh well, only a few more years before they can shed the weight of the contract and Sandoval can resume eating himself to an early grave.

How the hell do they not have someone hired to do that since day 1? Rhetorical question.

I have a hard time getting mad at Sandoval when this is the exact risk the Red Sox assumed when signing him.

I have a hard time getting mad at Sandoval when this is the exact risk the Red Sox assumed when signing him. Huh??? So you're saying a guy who signed an MLB contract should not be held accountable for not preparing himself to be physically capable of playing baseball at an MLB level? Don't get me wrong, the Sox clearly made a poor decision offering him this deal without any sort of weight clause and it seems their due diligence was non-existent, but to say you can't get mad at Sandoval for this issue seems pretty crazy. Signing a guaranteed contract shouldn't give you carte blanche to neglect your responsibilities to the team to put yourself in a position to be a productive player.

So you're saying a guy who signed an MLB contract should not be held accountable for not preparing himself to be physically capable of playing baseball at an MLB level? When he was fat as hell and throwing up 3-4 WAR seasons was he physically incapable? The fact is there was emprical evidence that showed overweight players declining around age 27 rather than 30, and we rolled the dice. Sandoval's skills on both sides of the ball are fading. If he lost a ton of weight, I'm not even sure it would be enough to make him an average player at this point. Sure, he doesn't appear to care enough to try, but he didn't in San Fran either, we knew that, and we still signed him (over Lester too). Pablo is the joke, but Cherington/Sox ownership is the punchline.

This was foreseeable with Sandoval as there are not many players who have a history of gaining weight during the season as he has done. He may have played his last game in a Red Sox uniform and I am not sure that any team will pick him up until he drops at least 25 pounds. When are we going to hear the truth that he only had one foot on the scale when the Red Sox reported that Sandoval had 17% body fat?
