Maybe during the regular season he could just work on giving up zero hits and walks, and call it a perfect season. I kid. But I really do hope he's not working on stuff like that at this early stage. ST is for remembering how to throw your pitches, not trying to get results, especially specific ones. OTOH, if he was working one week on a certain location, and the next on a separate location, and hitting his spots simply resulted in those outcomes, then more power to him.

Pitchers do this stuff all the time in spring training. I bet he's doing what his coaches are telling him.

You make it sound as if the two are independent of one another.

Spring Training is most definitely not for just "remembering how to throw your pitches." That's crazy talk.

Went to the game today. Panda did make a nice play early on but had two errors later although our new first baseman did not help him at all on the throwing error). I believe is still 0 for spring training at the plate. I know it is still early, but I sure hope they have a backup plan in mind. I am not convinced after 5 years in a row of declining performance that he is suddenly going to turn things around.
I know it is still to early to tell, but Sam Travis sure looks like a hitter.

Travis looks like he had a plan every time he gets up to bat and when he gets a pitch he can handle, he rarely misses.

Interesting suggestion that Owens could start the season in E-Rod's rotation spot. But they could also go with Wright and carry an extra reliever, probably Eilias.

One factor is that with no game April 5, there is no absolute need for a 5th starter until April 13, the end of the second time through--in other words, game 5 is on day 6

Since we're indirectly talking about the swing man role, I'm of the opinion that anyone else besides Wright is unlikely. Elias: I'm self speculating here but I would think that given the scouting reports and write-ups after the trade that the Sox will plan to use him as a starter in Pawtucket unless the Boston left side relievers are really really bad. Barnes: I think the Sox will continue to groom him as an 8th inning guy. I don't see it wise to mess with his development at this point in time. Varvaro: A likely candidate but so far he hasn't looked anywhere near as good as he was. I'm of the opinion that it's going to take time to get it back together. Kelly: That remains to be seen but I think most of us agree that he's likely to get a solid look as a starter before any move. Owens and Johnson have never been relievers. The swing role may or may not be the best way to maximize his talents but I don't see anyone else that fits that mold. Your mileage may vary.

Sean McAdam @sean_McAdam 38m38 minutes ago
SOX at BAL: Betts RF; Holt 2B; Young DH; Shaw 3B; Murphy LF; Craig 1B; Bradley Jr. CF; Marrero SS; Vazquez C; Elias P
Looking forward to seeing this one.

Results notwithstanding, Elias looked pretty good in the first. He used all 4 of his pitches early. If MASN's radars are correct, FB 95 (which surprised me), hard slider 87, curve 78. I didn't get a reading on the change.
He's keeping the ball down and seemed in control.
Vazquez with a nice block on a dirt curve.
Shaw missed a meatball on an 0-2 count. Holt barreled up an inside FB for his HR.
2nd inning, again results notwithstanding, he looked pretty decent.
He must be throwing a 2 seamer and a 4 seamer because all the FB were either 95 or 92. Change came in at 84 but he doesn't seem to use it much. His curve is kind of a lollipop curve but the slider looks excellent.

I believe is still 0 for spring training at the plate. He's 0 for 8. 8 at-bats.

3rd inning Johnson looked like ummm Johnson He's one of the most consistent pitchers I've ever seen. FB sitting at 88, his curve and change are excellent. He's definitely got the curve working today. I didn't see any sliders. Holt with a nice play on a wind-flair and Vazquez with impressive positioning backing up a throw.

JBJ botching a flyball to CF - should have been caught

Machado is unbelievable; would probably be the best SS in baseball, but he settles for the best 3B

2nd great play by Machado. This one saved a run.

If every pitcher worked as quickly as Brian Johnson . . . JBJ turned around on a fly to CF - recovers to catch it

Johnson is the first Sox pitcher to go three.
Lots of wind today.
This also might have been the first time ever that the two starting catchers were TJ survivors. Interestingly, Butler who replaced Vazquez also had TJ.
