A-ball ASB edition thoughts.
Obvious: Moncada, Dubon to Portland following their all-star game trip. Rijo probably goes back down to Salem. Shepherd to Pawtucket - should have already happened.
Maybe: Romanski to Pawtucket. Cosart, Matheny to Salem after ASG trip. Chavis to Salem - to again split time with Devers? I'm betting one of the two gets dealt at the deadline. They may keep Chavis in Greenville until 8/1 unless a potential trade partner requests seeing him at the next level. Ockimey to Salem - Having a great year, but Longhi is in Salem. Promote both around 8/1? Washington to Salem - he's hitting for power but striking out a ton. But at 21,why not? Ball to Portland - not yet, but might be time to let him sink or swim there soon. 8/1?
Less likely: Taylor to Portland - aggressive as hell in his first full season, but the guy is shoving. Aj Basabe to Salem - he's hit all year and the spot will be open, but he's awful young and has no track record. We do know they don't mind breaking the twins up though.

Justin Haley to Pawtucket tomorrow. Unsure whether that's permanent - probably depends on how Elias does.

So does the Dubon promotion mean we'll see Alejandro Basabe move up to Salem?

Okay but how about Ockimey? OPSing almost 1.000 ... doesn't seem like there's much challenge remaining for him at Greenville. Someone blocking him at Salem maybe?

But that seems like it could be worked around Longhi can also play Right field. Plus Ock and Longhi can mix in some DH. Plenty of at bats for both while still playing first base.

So does the Dubon promotion mean we'll see Alejandro Basabe move up to Salem? I doubt it. My thoughts above were assuming Dubon was getting promoted after the Car-Cal ASG, so I won't repeat. Basabe's also not very good at shortstop, or at the very least good enough to play there every day, and they should concentrate on getting Rijo everyday at-bats at 2B to determine if there's still something there. They've been getting De La Guerra some starts at SS over the past month or so. I could see him going up and being the secondary SS to Lopez, who's an org guy but can handle a basically-everyday role at short in High A. Moving him up also frees up the pseudo-logjam in the middle infield Greenville has. As for Ock, as I said before, I think moving both him and Longhi up around 8/1 is more likely.

Now that he's in a short-relief role, Gerson Bautista is a guy I could see on a fast track. Streamlining the delivery and focusing on getting some consistency with the slider as a second pitch would make him pretty intriguing given how hard he throws. Assuming there will be the usual promotion chain around early August, that timing feels about right to me.

I think Cosart is ready to test his stuff in High A. Ki'ing 37% of hitters this year.

Yeah streaky lol April .292 May .272 June .293 July .310 .290 overall plus in top 10 in league in several categories including avg., hits, doubles, walks etc....just terrible for a 20 year old in high A advanced. Not to mention his defensive value. Facts let's stick with facts.

Longhi might be the least streaky player in the system right now. It's part of what makes him so easy to forget about, because he's never bad for long but he hasn't had hot streaks really either. Also doesn't help that the Carolina League may or may not be suppressing his power numbers, so it's tough to gauge his development there.

Longhi hits for no power and is a 1B. He hasn't been good defensively in the outfield. He's going to have to add significant loft to his swing.

He's hitting a ton of doubles in the toughest home run hitting environment in the system. You're right that his swing doesn't have a ton of loft, but it's been remade pretty completely since he was drafted. I don't ever see him as a 35 home run threat, the type who would give you the power of a traditional first-division 1B. But he's strong, he drives the ball, and he's still young. His contact rates are there, he's patient. He doesn't have the outstanding tool to make him an exciting prospect, but he does enough that he's interesting. A believable improvement in the in-game power and next year he's in Portland hitting something like .315/.385/.465 and he slides into the system Top 10.

HR suppression is one thing, but an .100 ISO is another. A change in hitting environment isn't going to make that skyrocket to anything special or even average for his position. Not saying he can't grow into some more pop, but right now the odds seem stacked against him IMO.

Agree with perhaps more loft but not many people hit for power in Salem. Huge field, team leader has 5 and they're not all in Salem. Salem is no cracker box like Greenville its big. I like him, consistent good all around player just surrounded by top prospect talent. There has to be a reason they bat him 4th in every league he's played in the last 4 years. Only 20, power will develop I feel.

Moncada for comparison sake: 4 HRs in 284 PAs (Salem); 5 HRs in 89 PAs (Portland).

Once again, it's not about HRs. A .100 ISO doesn't translate to even .150 in Portland. That's a 50% difference right there. He has some doubles, but he isn't hitting for much power. There's basically no way to spin that.
Benintendi only hit 1 HR there, but still had a ~.200 ISO. That's not to say Longhi has to be as good of a hitter as Benintendi, but it is saying that even in Salem, a .100 ISO is low.

EDIT: But I agree with your overall point. It's also not fair to compare Longhi to Benny.

Yea but prospect development is rarely linear, especially when it comes to power. If the kid is consistently hitting and not being challenged, I think you move him up and hope the power comes in time. Everything else in his stat line indicates progress, including his walks increasing at a higher level, and everything else either holding steady or improving. I don't think there's anything wrong with leaving him in Salem for a while longer, but I also don't think it would be an overly aggressive move to promote him, though Ockimey has fallen off enough from the early part of the season that there might not be much reason to move either of them up right now

Oh, I have no problem with promoting Longhi, but I just don't see him as a promising prospect.

Longhi's hitting 47.8% ground balls so far this year (per the SoxProspects stat page). While that's a minor improvement from past years, it's still pretty high. It's tough to hit for a lot of power while hitting that many ground balls. It can be done (Bradley and Bogaerts are doing so for the big league club this year, though I still have mild doubts about both), but it's hard.
