Good number, make it even better by netting Quintana. Not sure why people are so high on this Quintana. He was Baseball America's 114th prospect and sounds like he only gains value as a catcher.

He should be able to start next season in Greenville. He's pretty polished for a high school pitcher. More polished than Kopech/Ball for sure. His big challenge will be keeping himself in tip-top shape.

Thats nothing to turn your nose up at. You always want the most quality prospects you can get in MLB. Having 1 more is better than not having 1 more, which is what everyone is saying.

This is good news. I felt it would get done and it did. I'd be much more enthusiastic if that hadn't been comprehensively curbed by the trade that was just made.

Happy to have Groome! Maybe if some pitcher gets hurt or underperforms next year we can trade Groome away. Woohoo!!

Better yet, let's trade everyone in the system, disband the Red Sox so we all can do home and play Donkey Kong Country 2 all day. Whatever.

Why get excited for this if he is gonna get traded for a reliever in December. Don't get excited, then. Prospects get traded, prospects get hurt, prospects bomb out, prospects leave as free agents and prospects quit to do other things with their life. Very few prospects make it to the show and even fewer stick. If you are going to invest yourself in prospects, you need to be prepared for good and bad stories. For every Justin Masterson, Dan Butler and Jeremy Hazelbaker who perseveres, there are multiple Jon Egans, Ryan Westmorelands, Cody Kukuks and Jon Denneys who squander their talent or have it cruelly taken away. We don't know what's going to happen to Jay Groome. His story is just beginning.

(If that exists) Can't wait to see Groome dominate prospect rankings the next few years

I don't think I ever saw this article, but here's a good follow-up on Jon Egan from two years ago. Nothing crazy, but he confirms what we probably knew: the daily grind got to him and he lost the fire. The more you follow the minors, the more you realize success really is 75% mental. Groome has all the talent in the world. The work ethic and intangibles remain to be seen. Jon Egan had talent, but lost his fire

Yes, things happen to prospects all the time, but part of following them (the best of them at least) is a hope, an aspiration that they'll make it to your major league team. It's a bit different to know that they're primarily trade fodder. It changes the level of excitement and interest a little bit. And there's nothing wrong with that.

I'm going to go ahead and compensate for the loss of Espinoza by doubling down my expectations for Groome. Next Chris Sale.

That was a great story on Egan and points out how important it is for these recent graduates from high school to be strongly mentored by the teams that draft them. So much money and so young give rise to all sorts of negative distractions. Hopefully with Groome as well as others strong mentorship can lessen the chances or these youngsters falling off the track. I know the Red Sox have a great initiation program for draftees hopefully the Rookie and low level A teams have a continuation of this as well.

Because of the trade last night, I would imagine Groome (and Kopech) will be held onto fairly tightly by DDom & the RS. Probably to the point they will let them fail or burn themselves out as opposed to selling high on them.
