I can't stand the pick off rule. I would only allow a pitcher to use it three times a inning before I call a balk each time thereafter. Bring back the bullpen carts and don't allow relievers to warm up once they have been warming up in the bullpen for 5-10 minutes. I don't know, seems dumb to let a guy warm up after that's all he's been doing before he came into the game in the first place. Let him have 5 tosses and let's go. So once a pitcher uses 3 pick off moves every base runner can just get lead halfway between whatever base they are on and the next base and steal easily? I'm sorry but that rule would be ridiculous. So don't call a balk on successful pick off attempts. That fixes that.

I'm sorry but when I see a pitcher throw over 3 times before a pitch is thrown, that's at least 3 minutes of time lost in the game that was completely wasted. That is before one pitch is thrown, never mind the rest of the at bat where the pitcher throws over at least 2-4 more times.
The pick off is a main reason why the game slows down with runners on at first base. If the game increases offense (stolen bases) by limiting pick offs, that also helps the game.
I think if you limit the pick offs it would shave on average 5 minutes a game on each game. It emphasises the pitchers to throw the freaking ball and stop wasting time. If you're slow to plate, the runner is taking the bag anyways. If the runner wants to go, then he's going to try to steal. Stop wasting our time by delaying the inevitable.
Limiting the pick offs also add a lot more strategy to the game too. Gives everyone more to think about.

If a team picks off after 3 attempts in a inning, the runner must be tagged out or the runner is awarded the next base on a balk. That's exactly how MLB could paraphrase that rule.

I'm perfectly okay with giving the game more offense. It's hard enough to score runs as it is, post steroid era.

A pitcher doesn't have to throw over 3 times to keep a baserunner honest. It's not some huge advantage. It's actually an unfair advantage to the pitcher to keep throwing to 1st, making a guy slide 10 times and wearing him out a little.

How about those who thought Ortiz was about finished last year around the all-star break? Or those who thought Ortiz was finished early in the 2010 season or how about those who thought Ortiz was finished in early 2009 when he was hitting .185 and didn't hit his first HR until around Memorial Day? Call me crazy but Ortiz doesn't look finished to me. In November, I will finally buy that he is finished. Anybody who says Ortiz bat speed has slowed down is not watching the man hit. As long as his bat speed remains, he will be able to hit a baseball. However I am a bit worried about if his Achilles or heels will make it through this year. He seems to really struggle to get out of the batters box and run. However no one should doubt that he can still hit a baseball. I agree, he looks like he's in pain running (or he's just being careful). It goes fron jackie, to papi, to pedroia, Hanley, price etc etc. The announcer for the Giants game the other night had it right when he said (if you don't produce here the media and fans will let you know immediately. I have to assume his bat has slowed a tiny bit, but his ability to recognize pitches has improved and maybe covered it up a little? Or he's just Dominican Jesus. As for JBJ, I kinda stopped posting here after seeing people say Mookie was better in CF, and Jackie would never hit anyway. God knows I've given up on players before , what a fickle web we weave.

Chose your moves wisely. This would have a dramatic impact on the length of games. It would make them longer. You'd have so many stolen bases that double plays would be much more rare. Knowing that they're severely limited in trying to hold runners on base with pickoff throws, pitchers would throw more fastballs to give their catchers a chance to nab guys. Hitters would tee off and we'd have more scoring and longer innings. But most of all, pitchers would take another tact to stopping runners from getting a jump. The P would hold the ball...hold the ball...hold the ball...hold the ball...and then step off the rubber to freeze the runner and disrupt the runner's timing. After the holding the ball for an unbearably long time, the P would step off the mound and the whole thing would repeat itself.

Yeah I think if you limited the pickoff throws the pitchers would just hold the ball forever and it might not help. I personally am a fan of the pitch clock. That seems to be a fairly simple thing.
I also saw another idea somewhere to help with the balls/strikes calls for home plate umps. It might take a little bit of work but I think they have the technology to make some sort of "virtual reality" strike zone which could be displayed on the ump's mask for example. This way the umpires can call more accurately and not feel as if they are being replaced by robots, while still allowing for some decision-making authority.

I don't think you can blame that homerun against Eduardo. Dozier is just a really good player on a bad team.

... but can't pass up a chance to take a shot at Jenius Joe ... Intentional, or unintentional, it's sweet either way. Thank you.

How does ERod look compared to his last outing? He looks solid so far. He looks like Eduardo of last year finally. The velocity isn't mid 90's (mostly in the 93 range) but he's spotting pitches nicely. I'll take that over velocity anyways with Eduardo.

He's right around where he was last year with his average fastball velocity. 93.9 4-seam in 2015 93.1 4-seam in 2016 92.6 2-seam in 2015 93.2 2-seamin 2016 Remember very small sample sizes too. But 93 is about where Rodriguez has always sat.

Joe Mauer 8 years ago cleans out that fastball down the middle he struck out on. He looks to be just about done.

Not quite sure what Dozier is doing there.
Especially with the amount of HRs Rodriguez has given up this year. Just dumb baserunning.

I remember Eduardo getting up to 95-96 in a lot of starts last year but I'll believe the data you just gave.

I think the twins realize that they're going to have to be aggressive and take extra bases to get runs and wins against the Sox. It was a close play and Dozier probably knows Mookie's arm is average.

Indeed. and if you really want to make a comparison, here's his start by start velocity charts for the past two years: www.fangraphs.com/pitchfxo.aspx?playerid=13164&position=P&pitch=FAHis first couple starts his velocity was down, likely due to the knee injury, but it's back in line with last year now. But in general the discrepancy in his fastball velocity did appear to be bigger last year, this year in games he's mostly 92-94.

Kyle Gibson is the only guy out of the Twins rotation that isn't garbage. He's pretty decent when he's on. He's getting a lot of weak contact and ground balls.
