Alex Rodriguez to retire on Friday, August 12
|
Post by DesignatedForAssignment on Aug 7, 2016 10:04:22 GMT -5
AROD retiring
Yankees say A-Rod's last game will be on August 12th; will then assume role as special advisor and instructor.
EDIT: I should say A-ROD is being released on or around the 13th after playing his last game. This is why NYY is on the hook for the 21m$ in 2017. Not officially "retiring."

Special advisor to the Yankees? Is he going to teach baserunners how to yell "I got it" when a ball is popped up in the infield? How to slap the ball out of a field's glove?
Will he recommend the best PED sources and masking agents? Will he give newly promoted players a teamwork and integrity talk?
Have a ceremony in Boston. Give him a giant hypodermic needle.

Just think, it could have well been Boston years ago

It's actually a pretty clever move by Rodriguez and his agents. He's not actually retiring (because retiring would mean forfeiting the rest of his salary). He's really agreeing to be released, and so he'll get the rest of the guaranteed money on his contract, but he's announcing it like he's retiring and doing his team a favor. He gets all that retirement goodwill without losing any money.

Also Red Sox, Don't pitch to him if possible! If he somehow gets to 700 on our watch, it will be worse than the Dempster HR after plunking him.

"retirement" appears as if they came to an agreement with both players and the Yankees are pushing forward with the rebuild a year sooner than anticipated.

Getting rid of Beltran, ARod and Tex certainly improved their team speed. A young guy in their system should feel a lot more motivated

I picture it being Yanks saying we're gonna release you, but if you want to retire, we'll give you a paying job for the rest of your contract,(keeps salary) and after you retire, and you stay in our good graces. It's hard to imagine he had any wiggle room here, he was gonna get his money anyway...because he wasn't retiring for any reason without his money Personally, I am glad he will be gone. I will give him props for hitting near 700 homers, that's hard to do, even if your on PED's Add: MFY lose 20 million for luxury taxes.....that is bullspit.

I doubt the Taylor Hooton Foundation will take his money again...

I don't think he or his agents were driving the decision at all-- obviously, the Yankees being willing to release him and eat the rest of the money on his contract was the main driver. But rather than fight the decision and try to extend his career with another team, he and his agents managed to negotiate this special assistant gig and spin it as a retirement, which lets him walk away with some goodwill. By the way, Rodriguez's salary will continue to count against the luxury tax (rest of this year and next). Not sure where you heard otherwise.

You really think the Yankees would be facing negative PR for releasing A-Rod to make room for a younger player? If anything they're doing him a favor, as they were going to release him regardless, by putting on this show to make it look amicable instead of having his career end with yet another ugly chapter.

Will not miss A-Rod, for as good of a player he was, he was an even bigger a**hole.

Speaking of Bronson Arroyo, he got to play with Pearl Jam on Friday night at Fenway, playing acoustic guitar on Black. Got a big hand.

A massive thank you to A-Rod for the incredible contribution he made to so many other players: How not to play the game.

With a lot of the famous PED guys we know when or about when they started. Bonds was PO'd a about McGwire and Sosa getting a lot of attention in 1998 and that drove him to the needle. Canseco filled in the blanks for us on McGwire. Clemens started juicing in 1997 or 1998.
But with A-Rod there's a bit of mystery to it. There's been media speculation that he started with steroids as a HS kid. It's reasonable to wonder whether the overwhelming majority of his 696 HRs were powered by juice.

No ceremony, no pitching around, or drilling him. Just play ball and be glad he's done.
