arguably the best Koji has looked all year Uehara is not what he used to be. It took him 13 pitches to get through that inning. Koji didn't want to ask for the senior citizen discount.

You know you're going good when Farrell is making the right decisions to bring in the pinch hitter in Holt and he goes deep.
When Farrell looks good, you know it's a great night.

Koji and Kelly may very well be the keys to the Red Sox World Series hopes. This team has everything else (lineup, rotation, closer). Just need that bridge in 7th/8th innings to make this a complete team. Seriously, Joe Kelly has gone from looking completely lost to a viable 8th-inning option. If Koji is genuinely back, and Kelly is the real deal as a reliever, it goes a *long* way to answering their bullpen questions. I'm cautiously optimistic that they're putting it together at the right time. Still have reservations about a team that's underperformed their run differential by 7 games, but a lot of that has been inconsistency of the pitching staff, particularly the bullpen, which has been better if late. And the starters have been excellent. Lots of positives these days, including the Benintendi news.

I get the distinct impression that Xander is just exhausted - he is stepping up and just going through the motions. Very easy out.

I seem to recall him hitting in the 340-350 range at the time. He is about to slip below 300 and seems to be striking a lot as well.

Forgot the specific stat, but under .250 since the all break.

We even get to see Ziegler come back after having the bird flu in this game.
Perfect night.

1-2-3 inning for Ziegler there.....
If not for the dumbest umpire in the history of baseball.

Farrell has apparently entered the ultra-manager stage. This is a managerial breakthrough.

ESPN has him .329 pre-Allstar, .256 post-Allstar. Not the best...

Kimbrel literally has no clue where his pitches are going when he throws them.

ESPN has him .329 pre-Allstar, .256 post-Allstar. Not the best... That may have been before tonight - so could be close to or under .250 now. With the big roster, a few days off may be a good idea - a fixed Xander is needed for a long run.

He really seems to be a player that streaks, and if a couple days of rest gives him the opportunity to get hot again, I think its worth it for the chance for Xander to get hot in late September and hopefully into the playoffs.

I'm not worried about Xander and no way you're sitting your best short stop in the biggest series against the Jays coming up.

Gigantic series coming up, smoke the Blue Jays and make it so that you're resting people in the final week.

Interesting stat. Sox with best road record in the AL - 37-31. Only Washington, Cubs, Cards have better road records in NL (St L is insane - their home record is terrible!)

Great win, but why is he using Kimbrel and Ziegler in a 5 run game against the Padres?

Great win, but why is he using Kimbrel and Ziegler in a 5 run game against the Padres? I think it's because neither had pitched in quite a while (at least Ziegler, and Kimbrel for a few days) and the Red Sox have an off-day tomorrow.

Great win and it's awesome to see the standings with the Red Sox finally back on top.
Price has been matching Porcello in excellence the past couple of months. Uehara looked fantastic. They need him. I do agree that Joe Kelly should get some looks, too, but I wouldn't count on him.
And yes, if Benintendi AND Wright can come back, that would be a huge boost to the Red Sox. It would also be nice if Xander re-emerged. He looks exhausted.
They'll need them. Those 23 games they have coming up are brutal. 6 games with the O's, 7 with NY, and 7 with the Jays, and most of those games on the road.
As of now it's really a four team race for the division. The Yankees, who are having the greatest rebuilding "white flag" season of all-time are only 4.5 games out of 1st with a lot of games left against the Sox, and they've not only played well against the Sox lately, but they've flat out mastered Baltimore and Toronto. They have almost single handedly allowed the Red Sox from falling too behind Baltimore and Toronto.

They should be actively looking to get their best 2-3 relievers days off (when they have WE% greater than 95 pct) with the idea that they will be overworked in the postseason. If Kimbrel+Ziegler get 2-3 days off in a row that's a win.

Off day tomorrow, he'll get some rest then. The Sox need all their best bullets for the jays. It's that simple.

Yes but I have a hard time imagining Kimbrel closing games in an LCS or World Series if they ever get that far it would have to be someone else. This team probably ride or die with Craig Kimbrel I was hoping someone else would emerge by now but i think its too late now.
