Yes but Hwang has only had a decent K/BB himself for a couple of years and doesn't have nearly as much power. He's also only supposed to be an "okay" fielder albeit with a strong arm. I guess he couldn't really hurt, but we still have to cut salary to get under the luxury tax threshold.

While the Sox aren't going to get a future perennial Cy Young contender like Espinoza back for Pomeranz but maybe DD can salvage a lotto ticket and a C level prospect for Drew and Buchholz? 2021-2022 will be tough to see Espinoza and Moncada dominating MLB on cheap deals.

The position player depth chart lacks high-upside prospects, but it's not totally barren, either. I think they'll still look to add another bench piece (ideally a right-handed hitter who can spell Sandoval and Moreland versus LHP-- Trevor Plouffe? Juan Uribe? Danny Valencia?), and a bench of that guy, Holt and Young is fairly strong. In AAA, that'd give them Sam Travis at 1B/DH, Marco Hernandez in the infield, Blake Swihart at C/OF and Rusney Castillo in the outfield. The most worrisome spot looks to be the outfield. Young is going to be penciled in at DH versus LHP, so he's not really part of the OF depth chart. Holt is an OK fill-in, but his bat doesn't play as well in a corner outfield spot, which is doubly true for Swihart. I'm still a believer in Rusney Castillo being a useful fourth outfielder, but if they really want to stay below the luxury tax limit this year, they basically can't call him up for a sustained stretch of time. Long-term, outfield in the system is crazy-weak. If you count Longhi as a 1B, I don't know that I see a single major league regular in the organization at OF. It might be possible to convert either Devers or Dalbec to the OF, although a shift to 1B for one of them probably is more likely. Otherwise, I agree with you to the extent that there are a few players way down in the system, GCL and Lowell, who might develop. I would like to see Buch traded for a couple of good prospects.

Give me Trevor Plouffe or Jae Gyun Hwang on like a 2 or 3 year deal for 3 or 4M a year. I like both of them for 3B depth. Not sure Hwang is the type of player DD would go after though. He's an unknown and DD likes known players. Plouffe hits lefties well, so he really makes a lot of sense if you can get him for 2 years and 8 million. I wouldn't want to go 3 years, heck I'd love a one year deal, but it most likely takes 2 years.

I guess he couldn't really hurt, but we still have to cut salary to get under the luxury tax threshold. Money is part of the reason I like him. Considering most of those guys I named are only making 3-4M, and he would be coming over with a slightly less impressive track record, a year after being posted and getting no bids, he should be cheap. Also, I read that the fluctuation in K/BB for Hwang had to do with altering his approach (which I see as a positive, because I think it means he would be able to adjust to the American game easier). In 2015, he expected to get posted, so he bulked up a bit and tried to show he could hit for more power. He set career highs in 2Bs, HRs, RBI, SLG%, but also struck out way more than usual. After nobody bid on him, we went back to Korea this year and retooled that approach, and managed to add almost 40 points to his slugging, while cutting his Ks in half. Obviously I know nothing about his personality other than assumptions I'm making based on these numbers and rhetoric, but he seems to have a great work ethic. It reminds me a bit of how Hanley can work all winter morphing his body into however it needs to be for what goals are set for him in the coming year. I think a guy like that would be great to put next to Pablo, trying to push him, whether it be by encouragement and inspiration, or by pure competition.

Obviously not in the system, but the outfield at the major league level looks very set for a long time with Benintendi, Bradley and Betts. If there was something this organization needs least (not saying that it does not need it at all), it's outfielders.

What happens if JBJ years an ACL and then Mookie goes on the DL for 3 weeks?

Well not many teams could still make the playoffs after losing 2 4+ WAR players to begin with, but this actually may be one of them.

Very true, there aren't many if any teams in the league who could withstand losing players of that caliber for long periods of time.

Just sayin...
If Buchholz was traded for prospects, the Sox would not only be under the cap but would also be in a perfect position to extend Mookie since the AAV would be considerably less.

Trying to figure out how many pitchers the sox keep next season and who they are.
Sale Porcello Price Pomeranz Rodriguez
Kimbrell Thornburg Kelly Barnes Hembree Ross A "very" bad Wright Buchholz Workman
should be an interesting training camp. Lots of competition!

Elias, not mentioned, has no options. Hembree also has no options.Baring trades or injury, I don't see how Barnes doesn't start the year in Pawtucket.

The Mariners DFA'd Richie Shaffer. We'd be smart to claim him. A righty bat with power who we could play at either infield corner and can be kept in AAA.

— Predictably, the Red Sox received a lot of calls on their starters after the Sale deal gave them seven — David Price, Rick Porcello, Eduardo Rodriguez, Drew Pomeranz, Steven Wright, Clay Buchholz and the newcomer.
Dombrowski explained that the interest from teams involved Rodriguez, Pomeranz, Wright and Buchholz, but not the top three.
“We’re just kind of sitting back at this point and kind of collecting thought processes,” he said. “But I can’t say we’re aggressively looking to doing something. We’re really more digesting what’s taking place. I think if we wanted to aggressively make a deal, we could definitely do that. but I don’t really have a big hole on our major league club to address at this time, in our opinion. So I think it’s really important to gather all the information. I think it’s also one of those where there are other conversations that have already taken place – not with our organization, between clubs. Some teams have guys available. There are some free agents out there. so I think some of that stuff, as it clears, we may find that even more clubs are aggressive. I think our philosophy, let’s just kind of see what happens. We’re not going to rush out and do anything.”

Clay and Moreland at $19M combined or use that $ on Bautista on a short-term deal? I think Bautista would absolutely mash at Fenway.

Even without Buchholz on the roster, I struggle to see a way to stay under the CBT if we signed Bautista. We'd also be losing our first rounder in a deep draft at a time where we don't have much depth in the farm.

Bautista is 36, had a bad year last year and was injured and costs a draft pick... no thanks... we can sign him in June when his draft pick compensation goes away.

To be fair to Bautista, he will still get signed. He may have to wait until after EE makes a decision, though. He had weird batted ball changes this year. LD% went up significantly, so did his Hard%, but his soft% did too and he hit for less power without significantly raising his BABIP. And we already know he's the king of IFFB.

You are seriously the best poster here. Make me laugh constantly and keeps me grounded and feeling better about myself. By my measure, you think the Red Sox have traded away the best 3 prospects in the majors the last 6 months. I'm guessing this is the order you would rank them if you were doing a top 100 list: 1. Moncada (multiple MVP awards is the give away) 2. Kopech (future ACE which means he will single handedly bring the team even if it's a AAA team to the playoffs) 3. Espinoza (Cy young contender perennially) I mean they have to be the 3 best in all of baseball right because not many players have those qualities in the majors let alone the minors

Unless he wanted out of Toronto badly declining that offer was bad business.
