A few years back, Hatfield was In the podcast that the guys just recorded Sunday, they were all rightfully decrying the lack of outfield options in the minors. Guys like Selsky are exactly the type of player a team should have stashed away. FTFY

I find it a bit incongruous that Xander has had nary a complaint playing 3B for the Netherlands after his 2014 bridling at the same from the club paying his freight One has a direct correlation with how much money he will make and the other is playing a few games for free for his country. As for Selsky it makes no sense to me at all how guys like that aren't more highly regarded and sought after. If he comes in and posts an 800 OPS and plays LF/1B fairly reasonably will it be that surprising given his statistical past? He has a sub-.800 OPS at both Triple-A and Double-A... so yes, it would be at least a tiny bit surprising if he turns into an .800 OPS major leaguer. He improves the Red Sox, though. He's better that Castillo and (probably) Brentz, and he gives much more flexibility than either of them. I don't really agree with the takes that he's "undervalued" as such - corner outfielder-slash-first basemen who don't hit for power are never going to be super valuable, particularly in the four-man bench era. But finding players that are upgrades at the margins are what well-run teams do. For all of Dombrowski's reputation for loving big-ticket items while neglecting the rest of the roster, his claiming Selsky runs counter to that narrative.

Maybe the force field centered around Foxborough has drawn him into its orbit...

I don't agree that this should be the order of the rotation, but I understand it.
Jen McCaffrey is also a really good reporter for the Sox. I'd take her over 75% of the reporters that the Sox have following the team currently.

To start the year, I'm kind of a players guy, reward the guys for last year. Porcello won the Cy and Price was here last year, Sale wasn't.

The Sox can always realign the rotation after the all-star break, I suppose. Or earlier with a rain-out, a spot start or a callup for any reason. With three plus pitchers though I'm not sure the rotation sequence at the top matters all that much anyways. It's not like as if there would be any difference in the L-R thing or even the knuckler thing since we're likely to only have the option of one of each assuming Pomeranz doesn't start the year in the pen. The playoffs are a different matter, here you'd want to take a close look at the match-ups.

I'd just like to see the Rick between the two lefties in the rotation. That and I think Sale is just better than Rick and Price and should get as many starts as possible. It's not really that big of a issue though, just a little annoying but whatever.

It's pretty obvious. I cannot, for the life of me, fathom why it matters whether a series would go RLL or LRL or LLR. It's not going to screw up a major league hitter facing someone with a different handedness than the day before. It just doesn't matter.

For as much crap as the Sox beat writers take, there are plenty of good ones. You just have to know who to read. I'd say that pretty much every outlet has at least one worth reading now. I'd just like to see the Rick between the two lefties in the rotation. That and I think Sale is just better than Rick and Price and should get as many starts as possible. It's not going to screw up a major league hitter facing someone with a different handedness than the day before. It just doesn't matter. And also, even if you did care, there's the fact that you're going to have at least two lefties, if not three or four, back-to-back in this rotation if everyone's healthy, so who cares where they get broken up? You're at least going to have Sale, Price, and one of Rodriguez or Pomeranz. But as James said - it doesn't matter at all.

Man Owens might be our #8 or #9 starter with how poorly he's started spring. I normally don't like reacting to spring performance but it looks like more of the same from him.

Just react to the positive things if anything. I won't react negatively to anything that I haven't seen. You have no idea if the ump was squeezing him or if he's even working on anything but his fastball, which is what pitchers are usually doing at this point of spring training.

I'm listening to the radio broadcast. Hopefully Owens can show enough to stay ahead af Kendrick

Okay maybe the left right thing in the rotation doesn't matter. Maybe that's in my head that day to day different looks matter a little.

Well, it's not as if any actual evidence-based arguments were presented (just declamations, the kind that those who make them believe would be somehow more valid if presented in ALL CAPS).
Although I haven't see any research on the exact question (it would be non-trivial to disentangle any effects from the quality of pitcher), there are myriad examples of "familiarity/similarity" effects (time-through-order penalty, knuckleball, lineup decisions, reliever effectiveness, et al), not to mention player testimonials.
It's certainly reasonable to assume that there might be some beneficial effect (although likely small) to splitting up the handedness of starting pitchers; although it doesn't really apply to this Red Sox team, since either there will be 4 LH starters (in which case there is no splitting up to be done), or the 2nd RH will be Steven Wright, whose knuckleball is likely more salient than his right-handedness

Was at Jet Blue Park this morning. Saw Panda in person taking infield at third. He is definitely not as heavy, but he is never going to be thin. Ramirez was taking infield at the same time. Saw Quinton at one of the minor league fields taking BP with a some of the minor leaguers. I assume he was there just to get a lot of AB's. Aybar was also in his group.
Did not see my favorite, Jayce Ray (aka Dan Nava II,) today. Hopefully, he is in camp and was doing something else when I was watching. There was an inter-squad scrimmage on one of the fields. People like Rei, Ockimey, Dalbec, Washignton, Monge, Chavis were among those who were playing. I saw Dalbec hit one off the wall in right-centerfield. Rei led off one inning and was joking with the guy hitting behind him about what a great leadoff hitter he (Rei) is - how fast he is, etc.) Given that he is a catcher, I doubt he is ever going to be a leadoff hitter or be fast. I thought it was great that even though this is there job they still are having fun out there.
I have to work tomorrow and Friday, but hope to be back out at the complex on Saturday and Sunday. Does anyone know when the minor league games start?
Also, for those of you who have been there you know that they have statues and plaques for past Red Sox greats just outside the park with their numbers, etc. Was somewhat surprised that they do not have a new one up for Ortiz. Does anyone know if they are planning to honor him in that way? He sure deserves it.

Does anyone know if they are planning to honor him in that way? He sure deserves it. I am officially annoyed that you saw Quentin. Was trying to get a shot of him but never found him (and headed home from trip 1 last night). There's one wave of players yet to report. Not sure if he's part of that wave but I didn't see Ray either, fwiw. I may only have caught the end of the second-to-last wave as I only saw Dalbec briefly yesterday. Minor league games start March 15. The Rochester Red Wings are reliably the first of our group to post their minor league game schedule: www.milb.com/news/print.jsp?ymd=20170203&content_id=215123432&vkey=news_t534&fext=.jsp&sid=t534In case anyone reading is unaware, the Red Sox, Twins, Rays and Orioles play in round robin format, with each day's opponent pair dividing AAA/AA at one park and high-A and A at the other (with occasional low-A games, college opponents, etc.). So if the Red Wings are playing Baltimore, the Sox are playing the Rays, and vice versa--and if the Red Wings are playing Boston you also know which of those teams play where. I assume that once Ortiz has his number retired during this season they will add a giant 34 to the garden for 2018.

Edited for clarity. They had some sort of rule about it, but they retired Pedro's number, so that opened the door. They probably realized how unrealistic it would be to have homegrown players with Dombrowski around.

And to top it off, Dombrowski has managed to piss off Betts with the terms of the contract renewal. What a black Thursday

And to top it off, Dombrowski has managed to piss off Betts with the terms of the contract renewal. What a black Thursday They gave him more than any player with that level of experience NOT named Mike Trout. And Mike Trout only received 5% more! I am not a DD fan but it's silly to criticize that renewal. Really silly.
