Shaky but he looked like Monster Dick on those last two batters.
Hoping for a split tomorrow.

GREAT WIN!
(should've never let Koji go. Also, must. not. look. at Margo's line. in. box scores.)

Barnes gets the win, he just has that will to make his teammates score runs while he's pitching. At least he threw fewer pitches than Kimbrel in two innings.

25 pitches, 1 hit, 2 bb, 3 k. In other words, a typical Kimbrel outing. My confidence in this guy having a bounce back year is fading quickly.

I seriously feel like they could put anyone else in at closer and he'd do just as well as Kimbrel if not better.

I know everyone is really excited about the opportunity to jump on Kimbrel - but perhaps the coaching staff could do its job and sit down with Kimbrell and Leon and remind them that no one can touch his 100 mph fastball.
He screws around with his breaking ball and gets into trouble again and again - when nothing changes I blame the coaches. I don't care that this is pro ball and he's a star reliever. Coach him when he needs it. Breaking balls for easy K's on the first pitch and when you're way ahead. Otherwise cut the crap and throw fastballs by guys. Yeah that's on Kimbrell but it's also on Farrell, Willis and Bannister for just letting him do it over and over when the alternative is he's unhittable...

But yeah, Farrell's an idiot for not going to Kimbrel for the four out save.

Even more reason to just settle in and throw straight and hard, instead he continued to mix. Allowing him to throw a ton of breaking pitches has been his Achilles heel since he got here and the solution is staring them in the face... I believe he's still a dominant closer - but he's trying to be cute and no ones holding him accountable. It's that simple.

It could also be that he's not (very) coachable. They should talk to him about not over-throwing and that 96 mph strikes are better than 99 mph balls, too. It's not about the fastball if you can't throw it for strikes, which he was having a hell of a time doing (again), especially with the first two batters.

Yes, overthrowing was definitely a problem against Kinsler and Castellanos as well. It's Barnes' biggest problem when he struggles too. Everyone loves to crush the pen - especially the guys their favorite prospects were traded for - but it not being managed well and guys making the same mistakes over and over is a thing. And that's coaching as much as performance. It could be he's not coach able - but do we have any reason to believe that? I've never heard anything of that sort over the course of his entire career. Meanwhile other relievers have similar issues - which points towards coaches too comfortable letting them do their own thing.

Re: Kimbrel If Thornburg and Smith are back and dominant and say Barnes take a step further in his control and command, they should explore trading him by the deadline and get a top prospect. I know they won't but if this guy loses 2 mph pn his fastball, he's done.

Of Kimbrel's first 9 pitches, 8 were FB, and only one was a strike. then Cabrera: FB(k), CB(B), FB(K), FB(K) Martinez: FB(F), CB(k), CB(B), CB(H) Upton: CB(k), FB(K), FB(K) Collins: CB(k), CB(B), CB(k), FB(F), FB(K)
It looks like the Tigers at least can identify the CB and just take it (only swing was on Martinez's single)

Kimbrel won't fetch a top 25 prospect, sorry; he makes a lot of $ and isn't very good, and Dombrowski can't make trades with himself

Major league hitters can time anybodies fast ball. Dont know if you are too young to remember Calvin Schiraldi or not. The only thing faster than the entrance velocity was the exit velocity.

I'm not arguing he should throw ONLY FBs. Beyond just today's game he throws too many CBs - of course he shouldn't abandon it entirely. As I mentioned, dropping it right down the middle on Upton for strike one was a great idea. And using it when he's worked ahead is a nice change of pace or eye level. It's undoubtedly a weapon - he needs to use it correctly. When he's not overthrowing his FB is easy 99 with jump and deception and guys just don't catch up to it - see Cabrerra's AB. It's not like they get three looks at him and he's not Calvin Schiraldi...

The mistake is that Kimbrel doesn't throw his fastball up enough; that's a. where hitters won't lay off of it b. they can't hit it Now, he does throw it up sometimes (although with his wildness it's hard to know how much of that is on purpose), and it's effective, e,g, today he threw his FB up 4 times and got 4 swinging strikes, three missing and one foul. The high fastball is way under utilized in general, and Kimbrel would do well to rely on it

I was watching Gameday at the end of the game and when Kimbrel got the second strike on the high inside pitch I thought, throw an even higher one more outside - and he did and he won the game!
Long ago I learned how to pitch but my body did not cooperate.
On another subject, my primary care physician, who is a very prominent and important doctor here in Portland, says the flu vaccines wear off. He told me he waits to get his until late, like November or December, even later if the flu has no shown up. I got mine in January. Maybe the Sox players got theirs too early.

Also, this year's vaccine was less than 40% effective. And the flu keeps mutating.

It's the third game of the season and I'm already sick of Moreland and the use of him by Farrell. I'll say it first, dump Moreland and promote Sam Tavis. Since this post, I think Moreland has been doing a Wade Boggs impersonation. Actually even before that.To start the season, he was making solid contact but just not getting the results. Here's a medical rundown: m.mlb.com/news/article/223241758/jackie-bradley-jr-out-with-right-knee-injury/
