Great to see Mookie rounding into form. Farrell can't justify batting him leadoff anymore. He needs to be batting in the 3 or 4 spot. And Kimbrell...good Lord. This is the guy we all thought the Sox were getting. The guy is untouchable right now. I wish we had an 8th inning guy to go with him.

Didn't know today was a day game. Sounds like it was an exciting game, along with typically excruciating. Hopefully the guys can get on a roll.

There are certain players with a "tough guy" attitude who won't admit or will deny they are hurt. Kimbrel must be one of those types. I can't think of any other explanation for his turnaround. He must have had lingering issues with the finger and knee.

Wasn't sure anybody could turn around public opinion on them quicker than Hanley did last year, but it looks like Kimbrel pulled it off.

As soon as they struggles, they're a worthless bum lol. But he has completely turned it around this year. So fun to watch

Overlooked in the discussion of today's win was Farrell's double substitution in the eighth. By batting Marrero in the pitcher's spot he was able to keep Kimbrel in the game. Typical National League strategy, and it worked well. Good game management.

How are they gonna get any games in the Tampa series coming up? Isnt there supposed to be a giant rainstorm all weekend?

Bringing in your closer with one out in the eighth inning on the road is legitimately an inspired decision. Especially because he was brought in to face the guy who has been the best hitter in the league and the Red Sox had the top of the order coming up. Kudos to Farrell.

His command has improved so much, which is kinda weird and unexpected. I don't think it's weird, I think it was pretty clear that he was battling an injury last year. Sure, he's not going to continue at this ridiculous rate but he's back to himself.

I'm so thankful that it has worked out twice in the last week since it was the right decision, with JF being the king of belief in small samples .

That's straight-up good managing. If he's going to use Kimbrel like that it gives the Red Sox a real competitive advantage, because so many teams would not.

I do enjoy how Farrell has picked the right spots with Kimbrel, but my overall concern is that he's going to be having a lot of 1.2 or 1.1 IP outings and that could tax his arm during the course of the season.
As Farrell pointed out himself the reason why what the Indians did worked so well was because they had Miller for those spots but they also had Allen available to be the "traditional" closer so that Miller could get key outs in the 6th or 7th and not have to finish the game. The other implication was that Allen himself was a highly competent reliever so that the Indians basically had a 2 headed monster in the pen.
The Red Sox need their version of Allen to step up. It's been discouraging that Kelly's stuff hasn't translated into him seizing a high leverage role in the bullpen. And Barnes hasn't been reliable enough, and Hembree is starting to come back down to earth. I question how much they'll get out of Tyler Thornburg this season because 2016 Tyler Thornburg and 2017 Craig Kimbrel would be one helluva devastating combo for other teams to deal with and would allow the Sox to do exactly what the Indians did last season in the pen. And this also goes for if they had 2015 Carson Smith, too. At this point I don't know if they'll get anything out of Smith or Thornburg but if they return to their former healthy selves then this bullpen could become very scary good. If not I worry that Kimbrel will get overused and have a lot less zip left by October.

I don't think he'll be overused as long as he continues keeping his pitch count down, which he has definitely been doing lately.
