Interesting Roster Decisions Ahead...

when Pedey returns - who goes? Marrero flashing a great glove and occasionally surprises - if he leaves, that exposes Panda. Travis shows that he can hit major league pitching, and offense has been an issue. Not sure what the best move is...ERod is easier (nice to see you Brandon, back to Pawtucket you go, I suspect).
The other...Chavis is a monster at Salem....Ockimey as well. Devers is blocking him at third (what a nice problem to have) - time to move one or both up to Portland?
Nice to see that the depleted system is flashing some lower brilliance.

When Pedroia comes back on Friday the Sox should return Rutledge to Colorado send down Marrero and add Court.
Devers should be promoted to AAA & Chavis to AA.

Pablo is a sunk cost, don't let him sink the season. DFA his *** already.

With Pablo hitting only against RH now, what about Travis playing some 3B in addition to sporadic stints at 1B to get him more ABs and give some more offense? Marrero stays because of his defense at 3 positions but only as late game defensive replacement or emergency starter.

Travis playing third base is more or less out of the question. He's a shaky defender at first, and the only position I can realistically see him picking up over time is left field. He's really a 1B/DH type, who you hope becomes more capable at first over time. Until the Sox add a legitimate third baseman from outside the organization, I don't see Marrero coming off the roster -- his glove is too important. If Pedroia is healthy and resumes playing everyday, Rutledge becomes expendable since his defense isn't a plus and the bat is nothing special, even against lefties. I'm not a fan of Travis up riding the bench as often as he is, but Moreland could use a platoon partner and Rutledge isn't a good fit for that. When Pedroia comes back on Friday the Sox should return Rutledge to Colorado send down Marrero and add Court. Devers should be promoted to AAA & Chavis to AA. Are you really advocating that we send down the best defensive infielder on the roster by a country mile? Court is a 29 year old with very mediocre minor league production until his last 150 PAs, and he's not known to have a plus glove. He'd probably be a better option to start at third base vs lefties than Sandoval, but that's about all you can say, and that holds true for Marrero/Rutledge/etc as well.

We should have a new thread..."If I was the General Manager, I would...." Presumably the only correct answer is "pick up Dave's coffee"?

I think the answer is crystal clear, you need to trade for a utility guy that can play good D and has a so so bat. Hernandez is out for year and Holt who knows. Marrero D is great, but his bat is just not good enough to start. I'm not sure his bat is good enough for a bench role. If you can't hit above .200 you really have no place in majors. His D has been this good for a while now, there's a reason he was left in minors. Maybe if we had a monster offense you could hide his bat. Thing is we don't, we need 9 decent hitters at minimum this year.

Maybe Lin can hit better than Marrero?

I can see giving Lin a shot, why not he's not a top prospect that I would worry about rushing. I would just worry that his bat would be about the same. He is having a good year though. Is it real improvement or just the fact that he has now spent parts of 3 years at Portland? I'm not a scout and his production this year has kind of come out of no where.

Lin is definitely stronger this year. He use to roll over grounders to the infielders, now he's driving the ball. His glove isn't as good as DM, but with some focus, I think he could contribute.

Is Rutledge our best defensive infielder? His arm is strong, but he seems incapable of playing 3rd, and rangy but error-prone at 2B. Marrero has cross-trained at 2B in the Minors, I can imagine he's the clearly superior option in the field. I actually like Rutledge's bat by utility guy standards. Especially against LHP. I'm just not convinced he's a good defensive player, which is an important part of that job.

On Lin, I worry that he's turned back into a pumpkin somewhat since coming off the DL. .212/.297/.212 in 11 games. Could certainly be shaking off rust or still bothered by whatever the injury was, so it bears watching, but based on the track record, I can't say I'm too optimistic. Hope I'm wrong on that.

Even if his improvements this year are totally real, that doesn't make him ready for an aggressive AA-to-MLB promotion. Benintendi and Moncada aren't normal. Getting Lin to pull his weight in AAA by the end of this season would be a very positive development in itself.

Is it real improvement or just the fact that he has now spent parts of 3 years at Portland? I'm not a scout and his production this year has kind of come out of no where. His batted-ball profile this year is dramatically different from previous years. Essentially he's gone from GB-heavy to LD/FB-heavy. So there's an apparent clear approach change. Maybe all the "loft" hype perked his ears up and he ditched the old-school "you're fast, hit it on the ground" advice he seemed to work under. But as Chris noted, he's cooled off significantly post-injury, especially in the XBH department (although his bb profile has been relatively consistent). Remains to be seen if the approach change is permanent and/or yields consistent positive results. He is an above-avg SS. There's not much space to be a worse hitter than Marrero, but it is possible.

I don't see that many roster interesting roster decisions for the time being-
When Pedrioa gets healthy and comes off the DL, Sam Travis gets sent down. Rutledge platoons probably with Moreland.
When Johnson gets activated for his next start, Workman gets sent down.
The only interesting roster decision that could come up in 2-3 weeks is the Carson Smith one. When he gets activated, then the Sox are faced with DFAing Boyer or Abad. They could do that or send down Matt Barnes. Marco Hernandez would get sent to the 60 day DL to make room for Smith on the 40 man roster if they sent down Matt Barnes.

Dumping Boyer is an easy call -- he's found some success but is running a near-5 FIP and is as close to replaceable as it gets. I agree about the Travis option/Rutledge platoon at first base, but I would hope the organization is looking aggressively for an external solution to replace Rutledge or Marrero -- particularly, a RHH who is a capable defender at 1B and 3B. That way they can platoon with Moreland and you only keep Marrero or Rutledge in the lineup against LHP, while having every spot in the infield backed up. Plus it's good insurance in case Pablo gets hurt again or continues to be inept defensively. Frazier, Freese, and Ploufee all come to mind.

I agree Matt, only with one counterpoint that I could also see a Mike Moustakas trade to be the the third baseman fulltime and not just have a platoon there at third base. Pablo and Marrero are two very below replacement level players. A platoon with either one of them makes the team weaker imo.

The problem with Plouffe is that he is almost a clone of Pablo, both in hitting and fielding. If he is available, and a lot of people seem to think he is, Todd Frazier, who hit 40 HRs last year, would be a better choice, assuming the price isn't too high.

I am hoping upon hope that Frazier gets traded to Boston. He's 27th in baseball (100PA) in average FB distance, 23rd in FB%, and 26th in pull %. He would absolutely destroy the Green Monster and would have a huge second half. Lord knows the lineup needs an injection of power like that.
