Interesting Roster Decisions Ahead...
|
Post by pedrofanforever45 on Jul 27, 2017 2:52:03 GMT -5
The only roster decision that I could see getting interesting is when Smith comes back. Kelly should be closer to coming back and he'll take Fister's spot.
I imagine if Smith comes back before September (middle of August maybe), they'd send back Workman until September 1rst and call him right back up.

If we DL Moreland, we will need Travis called up (which I would love to see). That's negates the roster spot. Fister will likely be here until Kelly or Smith are ready. That pretty much leaves Marrero. If the Red Sox did call up and start Sam Travis and they kept Devers around to start, the Red Sox could conceivably have a lineup that has Hanley at DH, an infield of Travis, Pedroia, Bogaerts, and Devers, and an outfield of Benintendi, Bradley, and Betts. What is the significance? That would be a completely homegrown lineup as even Hanley originated in the Red Sox farm system way back when.

Question: I missed something. The Red Sox have Sale, Price, Pomeranz, Porcello, and E-Rod in the rotation. They have Kimbrel, Barnes, Hembree, Boyer (who's now back), Fister, Workman, Scott, and Abad in the bullpen, correct?
That's 13 pitchers correct? And they are carrying Leon, Marrero, Holt, and Young as backups? So that would be 13 offensive players? That's 26 players.
What am I missing? Who got sent down? Workman? Marrero - are they carrying 13 pitchers?
When in the name of God are they DFAing Fister???!!!

Ah, thanks - that's who took the hit. Why can't they simply DFA Fister? They don't need him. Hopefully with whatever reliever, probably Wilson at this point, they acquire, that will be the end of the painful Doug Fister experiment.

Imagine if they'd traded for Lowrie instead of Nunez, do that 1B move, and DFA Young to call up Brentz? You'd basically be Leon and arguably (depending on your perspective) Holt from a homegrown lineup AND bench.

Joe Kelly rehabbing in Pawtucket - that will certainly return Maddox to Pawtucket when he is ready.
When Pedey comes back (hopefully soon) - gotta be another pitcher to go down...the bench seems short. Abad, Boyer or Fister?
We will eventually see Price before too long I suspect, which will mean another move.

The Sox seem all in on Fister (perhaps rightfully so) and Kelly, Smith, Price are close, which asks the queation will Boyer or Abad be here until the Sept callups??? This is a year in which the Sox will be happy those callups are still in place: Brentz, Butler, Lin, Marrero, Travis, Maddox, Taylor, Beeks, Scott, Velasquez, at least, will help the team in just a few weeks.

40 man roster again ...
It's currently full. Smith and Elias will be coming off the 60-day DL, and we'd like to add Beeks and Brentz.
Note that Elias has an option left for next year and hence is worth keeping around.
Noe Ramirez will be out of options and hence won't be useful as an up-and-down guy next year, and Kyle Martin isn't worth keeping around. Those are easy.
So is Steve Selsky, simply because he hasn't hit in Pawtucket.
Finding a fourth guy to dump is tougher, assuming Fister has turned a corner into at least usefulness.
The best option would seem to be to discover that Ben Taylor's intercostal strain is really bad and put him on the 60-day. A similar option would be to discover that Elias, if he doesn't look worthy of an MLB spot in September (9.83 FIP in two rehab starts at Pawtucket after 8.50 in his Portland start and 7.70 in his Salem), has had a setback, and needs to stay on the 60. He loses about 10 days of ml action that way.
If neither of those are viable, I think they'd have to DFA either Taylor or Austin Maddox in order to get both Beeks and Brentz on the roster.
And I think you want to do both. Brentz might save you money next year as Chris Young's successor (versus signing a FA or clearing tax limit space for Rusney), and might be better than Young right now, so you do want to get him some more MLB action. Beeks, as has been discussed, could be a significant help in the pen.

Sox seem to like the idea of the 4th OF being able to play all 3 OF positions. Brentz can only marginally play left. If the sox have a full time Dh, at least next year I see it as Hanley. Otherwise I think they rotate several players in and out to give them all a rest. This year it is possible that they can find a way to get Brentz some at bats , to fill the power bat need. But, not long term. Does not help with the power need, but I can see using Taverz as the 4th OF before Brentz. Looking at the era on Elias causes me to think that he is definitely an option for 60 DL.

Just noticed in today's transactions that Swihart is now on rehab....another possible piece of the puzzle if he gets healthy

So maybe the best think for both player and team is to let him do it sooner than later? I hate to be so down on the guy that I've been following for so long and who deserves a lot of credit for the development that he made from 2011 to 2014. But what is the upside here? He's not really a guy with stuff you can dream on who is a mess, like Joe Kelly or Allen Webster or someone. He's a guy who was succeeding because of his plus pitchability and sequencing, but that didn't work in the majors because he couldn't command his fastball. Even if the Red Sox put him back together, I can't think he's more than a #4 starter.

There's a huge possibility that the Sox could outright Owens off the 40 man roster and he clear waivers completely.
What team would claim Owens who has been declining to the point where he is having a hard time getting results in AA?

Even if the Red Sox put him back together, I can't think he's more than a #4 starter. You want to hold on to him and hope his stock rises, as it can't go much lower. Ideally, he puts it together to some degree next year, enough to be a factor in a trade. He already had MLB success, 1.6 WAR / 30 GS in an 11 start sample, back in 2015. That's above average #4 starter. No one thought he was a finished product, which indicates a clear #3 upside at a minimum. (He did it throwing 37% of his fastballs in the strike zone. Which, BTW, is exactly what Pomeranz has done in his great 14 stretch start. However, control is not command.) His tremendous swing and miss percentage in 2015 tells me that his ceiling is as high as his command. He was not succeeding just on pitchability and sequencing; he very demonstrably had a plus changeup vs. MLB hitters, even though they could look for it more than typically. The big thing to watch till year's end: can Swihart increase his trade value with a strong final month at Pawtucket, plus some September plus-ness? Who wouldn't love to see him take over for Leon as the backup catcher in time for the post-season?

What team would claim Owens who has been declining to the point where he is having a hard time getting results in AA? Any team with an open 40-man roster spot. Especially if they think they can fix him. They would have a month, the winter, and another full season.

Looking at the era on Elias causes me to think that he is definitely an option for 60 DL. From what I've seen and from BP's defensive numbers, Brentz is average in LF or a tick above, thanks to a good arm. Nor is there any need for a 4th OFer who can play CF, as Benintendi is already the backup there. Young hasn't played an inning there this year. No one's saying Brentz would be a great 4th OFer. But an OK one who makes MLB minimum has some real value on a team bumping is head on the tax limit. If there's a major injury to one of the starters, you can trade for someone.

Another possibility to open up a 40 man spot is that the Sox put Brian Johnson on the 60 day DL which is a real possibility at this point imo.

Owens is the exact type of player a bunch of teams would love to claim. At the same time a good case can be made the 40 man spot is more important. It's a shame. Might be best to just move on at this point.

There are much easier decisions before Owens needs to be waived. We don't need 13 relief pitchers on the 40 man, which doesn't include the ones on the 60-day DL.

Pittsburgh would claim him, Searage would turn him into a 2 by late 2018, and we'd all be extremely grumpy.
