Is esplin a power hitter? Not sure what you expect from the draft if you're being that specific. The goal is to find players who might make the majors after 3-5 years for most picks.

Back to back years the Sox pick a guy from IMG after Groome last year. And Logan Allen I believe the year before that.

Honestly if we just sign the players we drafted between yesterday and today, and get one more top 200 player tomorrow I'd be happy. I'm sure that we are going to draft a few of them tomorrow, but I'm only looking to sign one.

Yeah, and it's not like the Red Sox have had an aversion to drafting projected power hitters (see: Chavis, Ockimey, Dalbec, Kemp, Kyri Washington). They're just drafting the players they like the most, within budget constraints. They don't take in MLB team makeup, because development takes a long time and a lot can change until someone's MLB ready.

I don't get the Esplin pick. I don't see a high school guy signing at or below slot in the seventh round. Especially when he's got a commitment to a strong school like he does. Either they think they can make the money work somehow or this feels like a wasted pick.

In the new system, if you're picking someone, you know what their number is, and you've figured out what you need to get there. They keep saying on MLB.tv that of all the picks before round 10, only 2 players last year didn't sign. When it comes to Esplin, since he's not ranked nationally, it may be that his number comes in at slot in this position.

Yes that's the goal, but the Red Sox are loaded with good contact hitters but need more pop. The Red Sox biggest weakness statistically speaking is home runs and slugging. So one of my goals for the draft was for the Red Sox to find another younger player who could help fix those issues in the future. Of course Chavis Devers Ockimey all look very promising

I just realized that the Mario Party game I'm playing right now is older than some of the high school kids getting drafted. I think I need a beer.

There's some cash savings with Sterry -- and they can dream on the long, long, longshot of him becoming the next Matt Stairs.

For one, the biggest power guys usually have contact issues, which makes it less likely that they ever make the majors.

Hopefully the early Cleveland version, not the Red Sox version. Scherff would be a really good get!
