2017 Trade Deadline Thread (Red Sox discussion)

If the situation wasn't any kind of distraction, then I don't think we get the embarrassing PCs from both Price and Pedroia. After the game, Betts referenced "everyone knows things haven't been good lately". Now, maybe he was talking about the O slumping, but it didn't feel like it.
But the clubhouse is supposed to be his strength. His in-game decision making is weak. At some points, laughably bad.

One of the disappointments from last year was that the team peaked and was headed downhill going into the playoffs. I'd like to see that turned upside down this year, with a winning streak breaking as the regular season ends.
They've been drifting along for a while now. I like that they have Nunez to spell players who've obviously needed time to heal, and that Devers looks as if he's capable of filling the enormous hole they've had at third base. Reed should be valuable and they may be on the verge of getting Smith back.
I'd like to think they're positioning themselves for a run. Let's see what happens.

Should there be a "playoff roster trade deadline thread" soon? In which we maybe pick up a 1b bat, or spin off an extra RP or MI for a prospect or guy needing a change of scenery?

If there's a trade or similar news someone can start a thread on it.

But, again, the way he said it gave me the distinct feeling he wasn't talking about losses or slumps, but something else.

Can you explain in any kind of detail why you believe they cannot make a deep playoff run. They haven't won a series since July 5, and have been ineffective against very good and average starting pitchers over the last month. They are 5-38 in games where they score 3 runs or fewer. Along with having problems scoring, they are among the worst HR-hitting teams in baseball in a year where homers have been up league-wide. They have run into more outs than any other team in baseball. Their defense is mediocre. They are poorly managed. That's off the top of my head. I see alot of opinions and very few facts. They've won the WS with Farrell before rendering that point moot. The offense has been streaky, you don't need to hit HR's to win as the link I recently provided showed that 4 of the last 5 WS winners did not have one guy who hit more than 30 and of those 4 teams they only had 7 players with more than 20 HR's. They had the best record in baseball for about a month. They have the 2nd best rotation and the 2nd best bullpen in the AL for the best staff in the AL and they are getting reinforcements in Reed, Kelley, Price and possibly Smith. They have arguably the best defensive OF in the game, a GG 1B and 2B man. They replaced the blackhole at 3rd. I asked for reasons why they cannot not what you provided. Edit: and they are in first place despite everything.

So, the solution to the offensive woes was ... - Call up a 20 year-old kid.
- Trade for a utility infielder with a 101 wRC+ (96 career).
Put your hand up if you had their combined line after August 1, in 56 PA, as .460 / .518 / .820.

His presence has allowed the Sox to drop Moreland where he belongs, in the 8th spot in the lineup. I swear, this kid has been part of 80-90% of all the innings where the Sox have scored 2 or more runs in a inning in every game he's played in. This kid should be batting cleanup really really soon.

Cleanup sort of doesn't work, because that forces two LHB to hit back to back somewhere. But 3rd or even 2nd works. Maybe 5th for a bit of they want to "not put pressure on him," but he seems to be oblivious to it. The order I like when Pedey comes back: Pedroia Betts Devers Ramirez *Moreland if he's returned to form Bogaerts *Bradley catcher *Benintendi The three guys marked * are swapped around depending on how they're going. That's the order if they're all going well.

Devers has done an excellent job so far. Small sample. But, putting a 20 year old kid in a pennant race and batting him cleanup looks to me like we are pushing the envelope too far. Give him a chance to breath some.

Pedroia Benintendi Betts Devers Ramirez Bradley Bogaerts Moreland Vazquez Although I'd prefer: Pedroia Benintendi Betts Devers Ramirez Bruce (if they can get him thru a waiver deal, not surrender anything significant, and stay under the LT limit.) Bogaerts Bradley Vazquez

Bogaerts Bradley Vazquez Neither of you guys have Nunez in your lineups? Granted he's sure to slow down, but for now, I'm playing him every day. If everybody is healthy and playing reasonably well then Nunez is likely the odd man out. If Pedroia is healthy he's your 2b. He's not so here's Nunez. If Bogaerts isn't hurt and/or in a major slump then he's the SS. Otherwise Nunez should get some starts. With Pedroia down he can't really do that. If Devers struggles or has to platoon against a lefty - ah never mind, that's totally a foreign concept, but Nunez does play 3b. So that leaves DH and 1b. Nunez isn't a 1b but he can DH with either Hanley or Moreland at 1b, but he isn't really a power bat, although if Moreland totally struggles and Hanley can handle 1b, I suppose you can give Nunez some DH bats or rest Pedroia at DH. Nunez can get his ABs but I wouldn't think he'd be penciled into the starting lineup unless any of those conditions take place, which are more likely than not at this point. So he's an irregular regular if that makes any sense at all. And it still wouldn't cause the issue Eric was concerned about which is jamming the lefties together in the lineup. I think they can be reasonably spaced out regardless of whether Nunez is in the lineup or not.

Nunez is said that he will begin first base work when he got here. It's possible that he plays there this year.

I have trouble reconciling a guy with as little power (2 HR game not withstanding) as a DH/1b but in this lineup it's probably not too hard to imagine.

I have read in various places (i.e.: cbs sports) that we were trade deadline losers by these so called experts.
But I do not think that is entirely accurate. We made not have lit up broadway with our moves, but the three moves we made, Nunez, reed and devers, made this team better.
Dave filled two key holes with short term rentals and right now it is hard to say what the results will be, but it was strategic and did minimal long term damage to the farm.
I think these experts are all looking for the three run homer and fail to realize the value in a solid double to the gap.

And if I'd known Nunez was a perfect Fenway hitter, I would have endorsed the trade, in large part due to concerns about Holt. The only reason I didn't know that was because I chose not to look it up, because I was ... supposed to be doing something more important. And I really have to back to that! We'll see if I can limit further posts to Devers milestones.

I want to see how gray handles the pressure of yankee stadium and a pennant race. Plus he has a history of injuries. Also I am not sure whether he has pitched this many innings. I am projecting down the road thru September. if Garcia is that good then why did he get traded twice in a week. Why would the braves who are looking for pitching give him up. Dave still operating within the cap numbers, limits the things you can do. But, who was available at a reasonable price? Did not get the big bat. But, added Devers who is handling things pretty well in the short sample so far. Right now keeping Devers and not Moncada looks pretty good. Moncada is thru about 40 ab's is hitting .100. K's are better but still somewhat of an issue. Reed is a proven major league who can close. Nunez is not an all star but gives the sox a lot of options to cover in the field. Who knows maybe he catches lighting in a bottle for a month like Leon did last summer. Maybe not a BIG winner but certainly not a loser. Farm system damage makes this a clear winner for what we got and what we gave up.

McAdams article this morning states that ownership told Dombrowski that the remaining top prospects were not to be traded. Either they used it as a cover to stay under the luxury tax or they don't want to become the Tigers. Either they i wonder if this means they(Henry & co) plan on sticking around for a while. I know there was a lot of discussion amongst fans of going for one more championship and then selling the team

But, I believe that Dave was given a directive that Henry and the owners want to be under the cap this year. 5% penalities are a huge difference than 30 to 40% numbers. The big league model now seems to be develop the farm system with controllable players and sprinkle in some high priced players and stay under or very close to the cap. The owners want a team that is competitive to win it each year long term.
