Right. I'd rather have Martinez, Chavis, and Rodriguez than Cobb and Abreu - especially since the Cobb/Abreu duo would be significantly more expensive in 2018. The former would leave money over to sign an additional piece (a Tony Watson or something) or make an in-season upgrade if necessary.
My point is not to argue whether just getting JDM is better. What I suggested is that this trade is a fine alternative if the Sox also get a guy like Cobb. Is it? This is reasonable for both Chicago and The Red sox, isn’t it?
You made the following comment:
“ . . . .especially since the Cobb/Abreu duo would be significantly more expensive in 2018”
What do you think it will take to sign JDM? The poll suggested $25m per year. Abreu is only making $13m this year I think. And now with the latest signing of Yu Darvish not getting as much as anticipated. For example the link below has Darvish making guaranteed over $26m he only got $21m with the Cubs. And per the link below they’re predicting Cobb gets just $12m. Fangraphs projections think highly of Cobb. So going by this it is the exact same figure thrown about on this board for JDM. If The Red Sox are willing to go to $25m,
And we know Abreu is due $13m, what number would we say would be a good deal “but no more” to get Cobb too? While the poster redsox makes a fine point on JDM in the outfield, Abreu takes away Hanley from 1B. And while we are giving up pretty good potential, we would all agree though the idea is to win now. This move makes the Red Sox stronger. It’s also a win for Chicago I think? I’m thinking of the possibility of the Red Sox 5th starter would be the 2016 CY Young award winner and their 6th starter would be a 2016 All-Star. They aren’t “that” but they’re pretty darn good for a 5th/6th starter in addition to- by adding Cobb- he may very well give 150- 170 innings (maybe more but likely not much more). You can have the 5 starters give you about 850 (or 860/870) innings without wearing them down (i.e. forcing them to throw 200 or more. Then Wright cna give you 100-120. If Sale and Price are worn down, I seriously doubt JDM impact will work enough to win it all. At worst one of the two can’t be worn down. But if both are. Forget it I tend to think.) Think of what Cobb can do for Sale and Price and even Pomeranz at the end of the season.

I’m not looking to argue which move is better. Instead offer an alternative if JDM does not sign with the Sox. At what number would you think getting Cobb could be a good move/ or walk away from Cobb (assuming Sox get Abreu per the trade I mentioned). Abreu is only going to make $13m this year. If you aren’t walking away from JDM at $25m then I think it is possible you can get both Cobb and Abreu without significantly going over $25m.
