Every year E-ROD really seems to be dominant TOTR talent but suffers some sort of knee injury that keeps him out for a while and ruins a lot of his performances. Hopefully this surgery is the last problem he has with this knee. Here's too an almost full season out of him where he is 100% there, and is what we all know he can be.

With Grichuk (That is most likely spelled wrong) traded to Toronto, does that mean they probably aren't interested in Martinez? Or does it not matter cause they would DH him too?

The Jays are probably out on Martinez. It doesn't matter however. Martinez still isn't in any rush to sign and won't sign until he gets a deal to closer to what he wants.

New Approach:
The Red Sox have a large chunk of money they are willing to spend in 2017. They are trying to spend that on JDM. Pull out of that sweepstakes and “over-pay” Greg Holland on a 1 year deal with a player option ($15mish a year?). He was lights out last year in Colorado in his first year back from TJS until he tired the last 2 months of the year. When you’re in a race, you always end up trying to trade for bullpen arms. You and everyone else in the league. Sign that arm now and trade for the bat if you need to.
Here are the advantages to this approach:
1. Avoid over paying JDM. A guy who you can’t even count on to play 150 games a year.
2. Saves money for a better free agent class next year.
3. Allows you to have Holland - Smith and Thornburg before Kimbrel. Can manage innings to keep guys fresh for the playoffs.
4. Gives time to evaluate the health and effectiveness of all your starters not named Sale. JDM won’t matter if this doesn’t go well.
5. Lets you see how the young bats perform. Mookie - bounce back to MVP type? Devers - can he hit like a veteran already? Bogey - does a healthy wrist and New fly ball approach tap into his power? Beni - does he advance?
There are so many questions that signing a suspect contract for JDM makes no sense to me.

Holland would be good, but he is also being controlled by Boras. Meaning, he's probably looking for at least 4 years and probably asking for 5 years at insane closers money (17-18 million AAV wise).
You were better off just resigning Reed when you had the chance, but that time is gone now. I don't think the Sox will touch the bullpen before spring training.
If they do, it's more likely for left handed reliever. Your best hope is probably for Tony Watson at a 3 year 8 million dollar per year deal maybe?

Kevin Siegrist seems like a great target for a lot cheaper also. That's who I would want to take a flyer on if I'm Dave Dombrowski looking for a good left handed reliever.
He struggled the last year, but the strikeouts are there and he's still just 28 years old.

When it comes to J D Martinez sometimes I look back on the 04 and 07 teams and their success, and think people think the answer is just power no matter the cost, or ramifications in the field.
There's a reason we won so many games last year, there's a reason we won the division title.
I think you can chalk that up to young position players playing great defense and dominant pitching from a couple guys.
As somebody who watched JD Martinez hit laser beams 330 ft to right field every other day in Arizona, I can also tell you he did his fair share of banana routes, missing cut off men, and overall moping around back to the Dugout whenever he didn't run a ball out or hit pop flies.
I love how the Boston media wants a guy so badly, and then when they get him, within games they start judging his character because he didn't Sprint on a 12 Hopper to shortstop in late April.
So hopefully when the market dissolves, he settles for the hundred million at DH, because otherwise I'm vote to bring back in Kevin Millar to patrol our Outfield

If the Sox don't get J.D. Martinez because he holds out for more or choses to go somewhere else, then the Sox best chance of improving is probably resigning Nunez, maybe sign a lefty reliever, and then stand pat until the trade deadline.
Hopefully by that point the Twins aren't good and they are dangling Dozier.
Maybe the Mariners aren't that good either and they dangle Nelson Cruz, who hopefully can remain elite with the bat for just one more year.
Other than that, I don't see many other avenues to go if you lose out on J.D. Martinez. Maybe the Indians are magically not good and they dangle Encarnacion? Highly improbable.
Edit- You're risking wins by doing this too. J.D. Martinez helping you in the first half of the year could have a big impact in scoring runs, if the Sox sign him.

Is it possible to get Martinez for say 23-25M and sign Nunez while staying under the threshold? Nunez gave us offense when we were on life support. Fenway was perfect for his represented marginal power.

Greg Holland turned down the qualifying offer ($17.4m) and the total commitment/years are going to be the most important factor to him, it's extremely unlikely he'll settle for a one year deal. Also, many teams would be willing to pay him qualifying offer money for one year, and those teams wouldn't have Kimbrel. If he's going to take a one year deal to hit the market again it'll be in a place where he can close.

I listened to the interview when he was talking about it. Says he can feel the difference just walking, no more fears of it popping out.

It's not crazy to think that JDM has a chance to put up the best numbers in the game if he is primarily a DH in Fenway. Not saying it's likely but he's in the discussion if he can stay healthy and on the field. One thing about Ortiz being a dedicated DH is that it probably kept him on the field more and healthy. Lot's of HR parks in the AL East for a guy with his swing. Pitch him outside in Yankee stadium and Baltimore please, not to mention Tampa Bay and Toronto. Fenway is really the only RF deeper than what he had in Arizona.

He could also continue to have injury issues and only average 25, there is always risk. I think it doesn't help when the last three big signings, Pablo, Hanley and Price have all under performed based on the cost. Like a gambler who becomes gun shy their is hesitation. I think the Sox are handling this well and are fortunate that their is no competition from the other big spenders.

Can't wait to see Thornburg personally. He has electric stuff.

Can't wait to see Thornburg personally. He has electric stuff. Has anybody ever had that, had that surgery, and regained their full effectiveness? I don't ever remember reading anybody that did, so I'm concerned the Red Sox are going to get absolutely nothing out of that deal. I mean if Thornburg combines with Smith to give the Sox a dominating bridge to Kimbrel, then the Sox get at least some value in that deal, but if Thornburg doesn't bounce back, then losing Shaw plus Dubon plus Coca really, really hurts them. I'm certainly not criticizing - I'd be a hypocrite - when the deal went down I was fine with it as I was low on Shaw, but have to admit I was very wrong about him.

I view it as a sunk cost already and anything they get from Thornburg is a bonus.

Yeah the injury Thornburg had is more of a coin toss then Tommy John surgery it seems. I have some faith that he will. His curveball is dirty if he comes back.

Some came back strong and some haven't come back though. Harvey looked bad last year a year after TOS. Tyson Ross is another great example of a guy who hasn't been the same since.
