Coming into the game, the combined line for the Dodgers bullpen going back to the last 2 innings of NLDS game 2 was:
25 6 0 0 1 30
So when they put up a mere 3 1 0 0 1 0 line in this game going into the 8th, the writing should have been on the wall! Which is to say, the combined 28 7 0 0 2 30 line isn't really that impressive in that context. If I'm in the 'Stro's dugout, I'm thinking, "we totally have this."
So of course they allowed a run in the 8th, a run in the 9th, 2 in the 10th, and 2 in the 11th (those admittedly by someone not part of the streak).
Same thing for Janssen, who fanned 12 of the first 20 batters he faced in that stretch but only 1 of the last 6. He was clearly trending downwards, too.
They had given up a .108 SA coming in, then .222 in this game, so naturally they allowed 1.200 in the last four innings.
(And the .108 allowed was .556 by Fields and Stripling and .046 by everyone else. Janssen and Morrow had allowed 2 TB in 41 AB (.049) coming into this game, where they allowed 10 in 13 (.769).)

I feel like my late September thought of "McCullers would be a great get while his value is down after a mediocre finish this year" is no longer applicable.

I was impressed by Hinch's managing tonight.
Peacock was on cruise control, has no chance of appearing in Game 4 anyways, and Hinch decided to stick with him in the 9th instead of the knee jerk reaction of going to his closer, who has been very shaky lately.
Know it sounds like a no-brainer, but I think a lot of managers in his position would have gone to Giles.

Yeah, the Dodgers seem like they've been deflated and searching for answers after Houston scored off their best pitcher in Jansen.
I mean really, if the other team scores off Jansen then you probably have no answers here. Still a little ways to go, we will see how it plays out.
Look out for Rich Hill coming out of the bullpen if need be in game 4. Low pitch count in Game 2, and he could be deployed here in game 4. I could also see Darvish coming out of the bullpen at some point, maybe game 5 or game 6.

I feel like my late September thought of "McCullers would be a great get while his value is down after a mediocre finish this year" is no longer applicable. To be fair to you, it was never applicable. He's too young and too good, it would take some really moronic team to get rid of him despite of how much he struggled at any point.

That's very likely true. The dream was fun while it lasted, though.

Watching Giles hand away the game makes me really appreciate Foulke in 04, Papelbon in 07, and Uehara in 13.
When a closer can't close it makes a huge difference. If Kimbrel had done his job in Game 4, who knows? And Kimbrel was the best this season in the AL, and Jansen was the best in baseball this year, and his struggles in Game 2 pushed the advantage to Houston.
Now I have to wonder if Giles' struggles give LA the tie, a good shot at going ahead with Kershaw on the mound tomorrow and a good shot at wrapping things up in LA just needing 1 win.
OTOH, if Giles had done his job.....I honestly did think the Stros should have stuck with Devenski as he looks like he's getting back on track and had a strong 8th inning.

Giles has been a disaster all postseason outside of one or two games. This doesn't surprise me.
One more Keuchel and Kershaw classic coming up.
I didn't watch this game, too busy watching smooth Tatum and the Celtics.

That's just absurd! Seems like a great idea to force pitchers to adjust to something they're not used to in the freaking World Series. These balls make it harder to throw sliders. Yu Darvish says hello. I wonder if Sale was using these balls as well.

Your offense gives you 4 runs lead and you walk the first batter you face? You deserve blowing up that lead.

I'm totally enjoying this World Series. My feeling was that LA was going to win the Series because the Astros bullpen would be a big disadvantage.
But as I watch this Series, even though I still think LA will prevail, every time I think LA has it Houston has an answer and then when I start to think well maybe Houston is going to pull this off the Dodgers respond.
I really, really have no idea who is going to win this series, and I absolutely love it. I hope this series goes the limit the way last year's did.
Watching the home run derby unfold the way it has this series just underscores the need for the Red Sox to increase their power. The Red Sox offense wouldn't have been able to answer the way Houston's and LA's (surprisingly) has.

Yeah, MLB is going to have to answer some tough questions about how they turned the playoffs into the home run derby

These are two super teams. They are amazing to watch. I think Houston is going to win the Series.

Baseballs are apparently easier to hit when you take sliders away from pitchers.

Anyone who thinks you can win a WS or even get there without hitting home runs, just watch this series. Sox got theirs by hitting HR's. Remember Ortiz winning all those games. Even J.D. Drew hit a granny to beat Cleveland in a play off game. The point is, if they can't find a couple of HR hitters this off season, they're not going anywhere next year.

The Royals hit the second fewest home runs in the AL in 2015, and won the World Series. They're playing this series with juiced baseballs that have no scuff. The Red Sox roster is specifically hurt by such conditions (which nobody knew were going to be in place), as they don't have a lot of fly ball hitters and their pitching staff relies more on movement than velocity. And they still managed to win 93 games while scoring the sixth-most runs in the AL. It's okay to be disappointed by the 2017 season, but this fresh notion of their poor roster construction and that home runs wins championships is just nuts to me.
