I think the old system was fine the way it was . The owners only want the new system to save money. Baseball would actually be more competitive if a team that couldn't afford to big time fas, could spend millions on the international market.

But how do you keep teams that can afford big time fas from also spending millions on the international market?

We were starting to see small market teams spend almost as much money on the ifas and amateur draft as the big markets. Small Market teams can afford to keep up in those categories just not fas. But the big market teams spend so much in fa they wouldn't have been able to totally outspend in the amateur areas. Small Market teams can't afford most big fas in the new system.
The new system as made it tougher on the small market teams. Since spending on the ifa market and the draft was the one place where they could add premium talent fast. They can't even get as many draft picks for losing their fas. And the ifa cap hurts them.
Now big market and small market teams are forced to tank to build quickly. Which is something that the league hates as well. And if big market teams tankes that makes it harder for the small market teams to build.

The old system the Red Sox could do both, just look at Moncada. The new system was meant to give an edge to small market teams but it has one huge problem. You can trade for international money. Now that wouldn't be an issue if all small market teams used all their money. They just don't. Even the small amount given now a days. This allows big market teams to trade fringe guys so they can get more young high upside guys. Nevermind the draft which allows you to pay 100k to as many players as you want after 10th round. A few extra million can really make a difference in the depth of your draft class. Thing is small market teams can afford these investments, but choose not to spend the money. It's just stupid and mind blowing. Conclusion you can't help cheap poorly run teams and the fact they keep trying is just wrong. I don't want to hear how you can't afford anything when you won't even spend the max on cheap high upside talent.

With the Sox and Yankees now out on Ohtani, I would be surprised if they didn't get into a "bidding war" over at least one of these former Braves

Another guy besides Maitan that the Red Sox should go hard for is Abrahan Gutierrez. A high upside catcher from the 2016 international class. Would probably displace Baldwin as the top catching prospect currently in the system.

Quick question ... Now that the Sox have that 400K+ for this year and all of next years monies can they use this years PLUS some of next years to sign these prospects or does it have to be this years OR next years and the sox choose either one but not the other?

They could use some money from both this period and the next to sign multiple guys, but for a specific guy, yeah each bonus can only come out of one or the other.

Royals are under the $300k-max penalty for this year, so they have to have gone into next year's.
As for Del Rosario versus the rest, BA ranked him fourth in the group behind Maitan, Yunior Severino, and Livan Soto.

Sanchez also said Rosario turned down bigger offers to join the Royals as his idol was Yordano Ventura

Man, I can't imagine getting a million dollars when I was 16 just to be able to win the lottery a second time when I was 17.

Maitan agreed to terms with the Angels, per Olney.

Welp cross another one off the list. I remember a time where the pipeline was almost as important as the big club. Wonder what the Angels got Maitan for? Its a massive signing for that system. Sox going to completely sit out on these former Braves prospects?

I agree that there are 29 other teams but it will be very disappointing if the team has this unique opportunity to add talent and comes out with nothing.

Sox going to completely sit out on these former Braves prospects? I don't believe this is really fair. So far only two of them have signed, one for $2 million and the other signed for less to be with the team his idol played with. It's also hard to know how much the Sox have committed to next year's class already. While we have $462k left to spend this year, we may already have most of next year's pool committed to players already. Let's wait and see where everyone ends up and who we get next year before we can really say this.

Well the problem is that we're pretty limited in what we can offer these players from our current pool. Yes, we can offer money from next year's pool but keep in mind that agreements are largely in place and I'd imagine that a good deal of $ has a planned home. Maitan might be a special prospect, although apparently there are more concerns now, but signing him costs half of our bonus pool for next year, which in turn would lead us to back out of agreements for next year's crop.

How unique is it, really? The situation is unique, absolutely. But all bonus money must come from your pool and the Sox are nearly done for the year. So they tap into next year, but that takes away from the pool to sign 2018 J2 guys. Maybe they're comfortable with the guys they think they can get signed this coming July. Maybe they like them better. Maybe they have those dollars pretty well spent.
I'll withhold judgement until I see all the relevant data and signings. No need to overreact yet.

The Red Sox had a chance to sign a guy I first heard of last week, and didn't do it! I question their commitment to winning.
