I agree that there are 29 other teams but it will be very disappointing if the team has this unique opportunity to add talent and comes out with nothing. Everyone of these teams have money because they tried to load up for Ohtani. The Sox don't really have anything and maybe next year's international minor league free agency class is better. The Sox should try but I won't be disappointed in the end.

Doing some quick math here, there are 12 of these guys that were made free agents, eligible to sign with 29 teams.
Yup, I'm gonna wager that over half of MLB comes away with none of these guys. It would be a terrible shame if Boston fell in to that majority obviously, but it's a possibility.
Personally I'd like to see them sign Abrahan Gutierrez if they do pluck one from the lot.

Snark aside, the issue in the Boston system right now is depth. I'd much rather see them spend their 2018 pool on the guys they have been carefully scouting since an uncomfortably young age, not making a splash and putting all those resources into Maitan.

I’ll agree that Maitan probably never was a realistic target for the Sox. More of a dream than anything. But guys like Gutierrez and Severino seem to be possibilities. We still have $460k left in 2017 money. I don’t know if there’s any plan for the use of that money, but if there’s a chance to get one of the second tier players out of this group that’s a good move to go for. Will the competition probably price those guys out of our range? Probably. But it’s still worth looking into and hoping for.

$2.2M for Maitan, based on the 2017 scouting reports as opposed to the 2016 ones, is stunning to me and sounds like an awful investment.
Again, based on what I've read, so who the hell knows. I'll defer to the people who've seen the player.

Yenci Pena just signed with the Rangers. Looks like the Sox are going to just sit on the sidelines with these guys. Amazing. Anyways it doesn't help the go for broke mentality so I shouldn't be surprised here. Yeah maybe they have some wonderful players slotted for this money that they'll use next year who knows. But some decent prospects other than Maitan were signed. Sox will have the 30th ranked system in no time if they keep neglecting the farm.
