I live in the Winston-Salem area and try to catch a few games when the Salem Red Sox come to town to play the Dash (White Sox High-A club). Any posters live around the Triad area (Winston/Greensboro/High Point)?

Last year was one of the more enjoyable seasons in a while, solely because I didn't have to watch Buchholz play catch with the first baseman 30 times an inning. Even if Buchholz got back to normal, I'd rather not see him back in Boston.

I feel like it's far more likely that Buchholz never plays pro ball again than it is that he has another good MLB season in him. I doubt anyone is going to give him a major league deal, he's already made his money, and maybe this is unfair but I don't get the sense that he cares about baseball that much.

I'm on board with signing basically any sentient being to a minor league contract, but Clay Buchholz has a) averaged .25 bWAR over the last four seasons and b) driven me more crazy than any human who I'm not related to with the possible exception of that guy who was my boss in 2010.
Sometimes moving on is better.

Though the Sox are loaded with left handers . I would like to see Derek Holland or Hector Santiago get a shot to learn Bannister's concepts. The likely hood that a left hander gets injured in the rotation are very high.

I moved some of the earlier posts regarding Middlebrooks and De Jesus to more appropriate threads. A reminder to all -- if there is a more appropriate thread for any of this discussion, please post there. This thread can essentially act as an offseason gameday thread for now. That is, we will allow a bit of tangential baseball discussion that doesn't fit nicely into other threads.

Any posters live around the Triad area (Winston/Greensboro/High Point)? Spent Christmas in W-S actually! My sister-in-law and her fiance live right on the edge of town. Liked it a lot - didn't go out in the city much, but had a great dinner at Jeffrey Adams on Fourth. On-topic, we drove by the Dash's stadium and it looks terrific. Seems like a nice place to catch a game? (Long-timers will be sick of me mentioning, but a friend of mine, Terry Doyle, spent most of 2010 with the Dash. Were you there then?)

Speaking of therapeutic, I'm finally getting hired full time at my current job after contracting without benefits for almost 5 years. Now I'll have the security of getting like 4 weeks of severance instead of 0. lol
On topic, I live in Durham, NC and try to make it to the PawSox games there. The Durham Bulls Athletic Park is probably my favorite baseball stadium I've ever been to.

Changed the name of the thread because "therapeutic" didn't really quite explain what the thread was (and hopefully everyone will recognize the tip of the cap to Rogers Hornsby).
This is kind of an atypical thread for the forum, but given that this has been an atypical offseason, we figured it probably makes sense as something of an offseason "gameday thread" of sorts, so great idea godilovethisgame. Of course, gentle reminder to all that if there's otherwise a home for a post, the post should go there.

Hector Velazquez Boston 19 2/3 innings, .92 era .86 whip Those are his numbers minus his first start in Boston, which of course was terrible. His Pawsox numbers are very impressive, he could be a lot of help this year.

Looking at Velazquez's stats and they're very impressive. Take out the start against Oakland and he has 0.94era. Is he someone who could challenge for a rotation or bullpen spot out of spring training?

Is he someone who could challenge for a rotation or bullpen spot out of spring training? Depends on health and suspensions among our staff IMO. If you had a healthy and available Sale, Price, Porcello, Pomeranz, Rodriguez, and Wright, I'd say he would have a tough time finding a spot in the rotation. With Rodriguez out to begin the year, Wright's situation looming, and I suppose some uncertainty regarding Price, he is definitely in the conversation for the next man up (competing with the likes of Brian Johnson, Beeks, etc.). As for the bullpen, I think he will be best utilized as starting depth, especially when considering his options. He is not the kind of pitcher that strikes me as gaining much of a performance bump from moving to the pen. He mixes several average-ish pitches and relies on his control and command to get the job done. I personally prefer those types in the rotation and/or in a long relief role.

Given the weather over the past 72 hours methinks this thread should be renamed the Cabin Fever Forum.

-15 degrees below zero this morning. That's the air temp. I'm in southern New England I don't want to imagine the temps in northern Maine.

It has been -20 or worse with wind chill where I am for over 48 hours, peaking at -38. Hasn't been above 10 for about 10 days now. These are the kind of winters that make people move to Florida.
Taking care of a 250 year old 5000 square ft farmhouse with no insulation heated mostly by wood. The back field is 60 acres and the wind has been so strong that it has blown 12 inches of snow from thursday away since friday, fun times.

There is a reason why my wife and I moved to SW Florida guys. My neighbors were pissed off because we had several days last week in a row that never went over 55 degrees. As my favorite stable philosopher said, that is "SAD"!

From Google:
Davao City: Annual Weather Averages. April is the hottest month in Davao City with an average temperature of 29°C (84°F) and the coldest is January at 28°C (82°F).
We pretty much don't have seasons, extreme hot days nor extreme cold days or even much difference between daytime and night time temperatures. The rainfall varies. I do miss New England in the Fall but I also missed that when I lived in California and Colorado.
When I was about 25, my best friend and I were chipping ice off the windshield in December. The next day, we started our journey to California. The nice thing about California is that it was pretty easy to be at the beach in the morning and in snow in the afternoon then go home.
