I'd like to see Chatham get some time in the OF. How do we position following players? Devers Chavis Chatham Dalbec SS is Xander's. I am intrigued by having a power bat play 2B. I think Chavis can be adequate 2B defensively. Gold Glover? Absolutely not. A guy with 30 HR pop at 2B is great upgrade. To me Dalbec at 3B and Devers to 1B make more sense. I'm guessing fielding is a draw at best but throwing across the diamond edge goes to Dalbec. With that, I would move Chatam to LF. Move Beni to CF and trade JBJ. He simply struggles too much at the plate. I’m curious as to what makes you think he can even play the outfield. Chatham is a shortstop. A reasonably good defensive one. I’m all for positional versatility, but the idea that you can just move anyone anywhere is ridiculous. I though I read somewhere he had played some OF. An athletic shortstop at 6-4 should be an adequate outfielder in my mind. You do know that Betts played 2B, no?

I wouldn't assume that if Mookie can do it, anyone else can too.

He played outfield on a loaded travel team that included Mets defensive stud Luis Guillorme. Not quite the same, but yes, he's played some outfield. Before we move him to the outfield, let's make sure the bat will play in the outfield and that there's even room there. When Mookie Betts moved to the outfield, he had become one of the game's top prospects. Chatham barely projects as a 50.

For context, CJ Chatham is hitting .351/.415/.509 in his first 65 AA plate appearances. We are acting like his bat is ready for MLB right now. Garin Cecchini hit .400/.507/.564 in his first 67 AA plate appearances (his age 22 season compared to Chatham's age 24 season). He hit .265/.395/.357 the rest of the way that season in 228 PA as AA pitching adjusted to him. He went on to be unable to hit major league pitching. Let's calm down here and let Chatham get some plate appearances in what might wind up being Chatham's first professional season without a significant injury if he stays healthy, eh? You must be loads of fun at parties, Chris...

Is it safe to assume Chatham has a higher floor than Cecchini, though, since he’s higher on the defensive spectrum, or does Chatham being 24 already negate it a little?

Your point about defense makes sense, but Chatham still has a AAA floor. Like Cecchini (which is probably why he came to mind), he's got questions about whether there's enough pop in his bat, and Cecchini was tight to have a better hit tool. Escaping the Carolina League will always make it look like a player has added pop, another reason why we need a bigger sample before we can draw any conclusions. Generally, you want to see a guy get at least 250-300 plate appearances before considering whether he'll get promoted. As far as learning a new position, for reference, Mookie was at 177 plate appearances (and, again, rocketing to the top of prospect lists) before he got a start in center.

I believe the only path to Catham on this team in 2020 is if Devers moves to first and Catham moves to third base. If that doesn't happen, then I have no idea what the plan is for him. Probably trade bait based off of his good first half this year. Xander isn't going anywhere and the Sox have like 4 options at second base in 2020 in Pedrioa, Lin, and maybe Chavis/Marco Hernandez. Pedro, if Chatham hits well in AA, forced a promotion mid-season to AAA and rakes there, at some point if 2b is open, he'd be an option. We don't know how healthy Pedroia will be. As far as Lin, Hernandez, and Chatham go, they're all projected as utility guys although Chatham might be what's considered a 2nd division regular perhaps. But if you look at how the Sox shape up for 2020, odds are that both Moreland and Pearce are gone and the Sox will be looking for lost cost replacements. I would think Chavis would be a good candidate to be the 1b as Devers likely remains at 3b. So 2b is up for grabs if Pedroia still isn't right. Perhaps you have a Lin/Chatham platoon at some point or the Sox bring in a cheap option or maybe, Chatham forces them to see him as an option for 2b. The guy would really have to continue to rake, force his way to Pawtucket, rake there, and then impress enough. I'm not really sweating it either way with him. I think he can be a 2nd division regular if he develops fully or a useful utility man - perhaps the 2020 replacement for Nunez at some point, even if he isn't quite as projected. As I see it, you can find 2nd division regular types without paying too much in terms of $ or talent to acquire. Or maybe Lin impresses? That's just as probable as Chatham.

It's April and our light hitting gold glove center fielder is slumping again. Time to move a legit defensive presence at short with a unproven bat, to left to make room. Why does it sound familiar?

Just to circle back to this, so you'll see why the "PROMOTE PLAYER NOW AFTER TWO GOOD WEEKS" stuff gets so tiresome and gets so much pushback: Since all that "promote Chatham" talk which started on 4/25, he is 3 for 25 with no extra base hits, one walk, and five strikeouts. His season line is back to a still-totally-solid .295/.352/.410. I'm pretty excited with a legit shortstop who is putting up a .350+ OBP at Double-A! But the two weeks of BABIP-charged great play were not indicative of a guy playing at a level beneath him.
I am excited for next season, when someone gets hot for two weeks and we do the same thing all over again.

And Chatham is now 7 for his last 11, raising his batting average back up to .337. *Clearly* needs to be in Boston.

These last three games he had been squaring up almost everything.
If he is still hitting .320 or more come June, then maybe we should bump him up to Pawtucket.

Chatham's May is quite amazing in the sens that he hit .304 and his OPS is .661 lol How's that even possible? 4 BB (1 intentional) in 76 PA and ONE extra base hit (a Double).

Glass half-full take: a decent defensive shortstop carrying a .661 OPS in a month where he hits for absolutely no power is fine.

Half empty take: He's in a system with Holt, Hernandez, Lin & Fitzgerald.

Half empty take: He's in a system with Holt, Hernandez, Lin & Fitzgerald. I don't see how that's half-empty. Holt is a free agent after this season, Chatham's a better shortstop than the other three, and he doesn't have to ever play for the Red Sox to provide them value. Chatham's probably not ever going to be the Red Sox starting shortstop unless something goes wrong. But there might be someone out there who think he can be for their team. He's a better prospect than Santiago Espinal, who the Red Sox turned into a very useful stretch from Steve Pearce.

I was mainly referring to the Red Sox. Unless something catastrophic happens, he's not their starting shortstop and he's the least valuable as a utility player.
Unless the SP profile is off considerably, "Projects as a solid-average-to-better defender and should be able to stick at shortstop long-term" is not good enough to overcome zero power and zero speed. Reading into the profile, some power was expected but it hasn't happened yet and he's 24. This is Marrero-lite.
I don't know how much value the 5th best utility player on a team is likely to bring. Expecting a Pearce is like asking lightning to strike the same place twice.

Half empty take: He's in a system with Holt, Hernandez, Lin & Fitzgerald. Are we really putting Fitzgerald in this discussion? I get he's had a great a season but he's only 6 months younger than Chatham at a level lower and Chatham has a much longer track record of being a prospect so I'd be very hesitant to declare Fitzgerald a better prospect at this point.

Eh, I can't see a lot of positive things in managing to OPS .661 despite having a BABIP of .361 (with a lowish LD% of 18.3 so some luck seems to be involved here). Anyway, I don't think he's any good and the FO hopefully could sell high and trade him for a relief piece or something.

I've seen him a lot. He's solid at everything and has considerably more pop than Chatham. No plus tools but also no minus tools. Plays 2B, SS & 3B. I don't care about pedigree.
