I don't understand why the Red Sox traded Brentz for money rather than for international bonus money. The Pirates still had approx $2.2 million available at the end of November 2017. You would think they would have sought more international bonus money rather than straight cash. I could be wrong, but I think the Red Sox have already maxed out the amount of money they can trade for

There also is probably no more need for it in this signing period given that it's not like there are still big money IFAs just sitting there.

Chris, Ben Badler mentioned yesterday that this 21 year old Cuban prospect was cleared to sign yesterday. The Red Sox could certainly use another toolsy outfielder in their system. www.baseballamerica.com/international/julio-pablo-martinez-cleared-sign/#dBzOrKzkXhFo753Y.97

He is heavily rumored to be signing with either the Rangers or the Yankees (both teams have a good amount of $$ left). Rangers just traded for 350k in space today. I don't think the Red Sox have any shot at signing him.

Is there a chance that JDM asked for the Sox to assure him that he would be given any available opportunities to play in the outfield, as sort of an unwritten condition, in regards to him being willing to sign with the Sox?

Brentz obviously isn't a late-innings, defensive replacement type of player

If JDM rumors that he preferred playing outfield, to being DH, are true, then maybe he asked as condition of him signing to be given first option for available playing time in outfield, to help improve his marketability in two years in case he decides to opt-out.
I really suspect that Perhaps JDM feels he has had some sort of 'epiphany' in regards to his hitting, in the last year or two. He was good before, but he caught lightning in his bat last year. I bet he feels he can be even better the next few years. He's probably not happy about how the contract underwhelmed him with what he's sure he can do in the next year or two.
Asking for playing time in outfield obviously helps his marketability in two years if he also rakes, and decides to opt-out.
My imagination really runs wild sometimes!!

There's no way that Bryce Brentz was something that JD Martinez was worried about before signing with Boston, so yeah, I think your imagination is doing a distance run right now.
As for Julio Pablo Martinez, like vermontsox said, the Sox aren't in on him. They wouldn't have nearly enough room to sign him - they spent pretty close up to their cap.

A couple years ago no one would have given a bag of batting practice balls for Brentz. But to his credit he turned things around... somewhat... and perhaps re-ignited some hope he'd finally begun to live up to his draft status. I wish him well with Pittsburgh. Hopefully he'll carve out some playing time. Imagine if he'd had his turnaround year a few seasons ago? Oh well...

The thing about a breakout as late as Brentz's is, why did it take so long for him to adjust? If he closed a hole in his swing, he probably opened another one. Once MLB pitchers find it, he's got like six weeks to adjust or he's out of the league. And it took many, many years to adjust the first time... Marcus Thames was a good example of this kind of thing last year, he spent years in Korea rebuilding himself as a hitter. It worked for about a month against MLB pitching, pitchers changed their approach, and he wasn't able to answer for the rest of the season.
So yeah, I believe the Brentz breakout happened, I just don't know how much it means going forward against MLB pitchers. Plus, he's already in his decline years. Hope he does well with the Pirates, but I doubt this comes back to haunt the Red Sox in any major way.

Oops...no, I meant the other way around. If JDM expressed desire to be extra outfielder if opportunities came up, then Sox management knew Brentz was not gonna see playing time in outfield, not without possibly upsetting JDM's desires. That was all I meant. Brentz couldn't be fourth outfielder on this team - at least not without him having any defensive prowess - once JDM was signed. I wish Brentz a prosperous future in MLB. Even if it's with another team. It's been awesome to see Rich Hill become a star, even if his opportunity to do that with the Sox was scrunched as the Sox didn't have room for a question mark, as they always seem to be too close to first place to be able to take gambles on longshots. I hope to see Brentz flourish.

I think the writing was on the wall, but it wouldn't have hurt to have him around in case of an injury until a bit farther along in camp.

Bryce Brentz's shot at some regular playing time just took a big hit.
The Pirates acquired Corey Dickerson, so he'll be playing left and they have Marte and Polanco to round out the outfield. There's no DH and the Pirates have Nava as their primary outfield depth and Meadows is on the horizon.
Maybe if there's an injury he can be the short-side of a platoon with Nava.
I do wish the Sox hung onto him a little longer just to guard against there being an injury to an outfielder resulting in DL time. Then Brentz could have made the roster.

Makes a lot of sense for the Rays to trade Dickerson for a crappy relief pitcher making about the same amount of money. I hope they left out how much salary the Pirates are covering.

Lol the Rays shaved 1 and a half million to get a lot worse in a trade. That organization deserves all the bad karma it gets.

Wrong thread, but just to follow up on this, Martinez just signed for $2.8M. Red Sox had maybe like $500k left under their cap of money they could even trade up to.

It's too bad the Sox couldn't get the space for the death of Flores.

Brentz cleared waivers with the Mets. Any chance he refuses the assignment and comes back here?

Brentz cleared waivers with the Mets. Any chance he refuses the assignment and comes back here? You need 5 years of MLB service time to refuse a DFA. I wanted them to keep Brentz and try to sneak him through waivers at the end of ST. They could have done that pretty effortlessly by dealing Marrero instead of him. That was two days after they signed Nunez, and at that point it was clear that neither was going to make the team unless someone got injured. But we were (and remain) deeper in backup MI options than in OF. Lin could have made the team if they traded Marrero and an infielder got hurt, but if an OF got hurt ... by keeping Marrero, it meant we would have been adding another MI instead of Brentz. IOW, we had two guys who had no chance of making the team unless someone got hurt but might be kept in the organization for depth ... so why deal the guy at the thinner position first? Who was also probably the guy more likely to clear waivers? So there's zero reason why Brentz is not back at Pawtucket. We'll see if that backfires at all.

Players can only be outrighted without their consent once in their career, which Brentz was last year. He can now choose free agency anytime a team tries to take him off the 40-man.

What a story it would be if he ended up contributing to the Sox at some point.
He could have a few decent seasons left in him. I do think something clicked for him this past year, I really don't think it was a fluke.

If something really clicked in Brentz, why was he released by 2 teams this spring?
If he gets to be free agent, why would he choose to come back to Boston/Pawtucket? I'm not I'd feel like they have the most confidence in me. I'd assume he'll have better options, better situations.
