Brentz cleared waivers with the Mets. Any chance he refuses the assignment and comes back here? You need 5 years of MLB service time to refuse a DFA. I wanted them to keep Brentz and try to sneak him through waivers at the end of ST. They could have done that pretty effortlessly by dealing Marrero instead of him. That was two days after they signed Nunez, and at that point it was clear that neither was going to make the team unless someone got injured. But we were (and remain) deeper in backup MI options than in OF. Lin could have made the team if they traded Marrero and an infielder got hurt, but if an OF got hurt ... by keeping Marrero, it meant we would have been adding another MI instead of Brentz. IOW, we had two guys who had no chance of making the team unless someone got hurt but might be kept in the organization for depth ... so why deal the guy at the thinner position first? Who was also probably the guy more likely to clear waivers? So there's zero reason why Brentz is not back at Pawtucket. We'll see if that backfires at all. I was going off of what I read on mlbtraderumors. This: "It seems that the out-of-options Brentz will be outrighted off of the New York 40-man roster, though he’ll have the right to decline an assignment to Triple-A." And: "Now, though, Brentz will have to decide whether to stay with his new organization or instead set out onto the open market. The Mets do not appear to have a direct path up to the majors, though obviously the organization likes the player. Given that every other team has now passed on a chance to add Brentz to a 40-man roster, it seems unlikely he’ll earn an Opening Day job in the big leagues, though perhaps there are some more promising opportunities out there."

If something really clicked in Brentz, why was he released by 2 teams this spring? If he gets to be free agent, why would he choose to come back to Boston/Pawtucket? I'm not I'd feel like they have the most confidence in me. I'd assume he'll have better options, better situations. Familiarity? The Sox did give him a long period of time to develop. I do believe last year was not a fluke and something did click but what do I know. Every team in MLB just passed on adding him to their roster so I guess I know nothing.

I've spoken to a scout who's got the Pirates and saw Brentz a lot this spring. He wasn't impressed.

Honestly, I'm more bullish on Barfield than I am Brentz. Barfield is better defensively, and I think he might be a better hitter than Brentz. I don't think he'll get much of a chance, but I find him more intriguing.
If Brentz isn't too good defensively, it really limits his options.

Looks like he isn't making any other MLB team so where does he want to play AAA?
