Oh yeah! That time of the year where we get pissed because the team didn't pick up some guy we saw once on TV or read one liner about him in Baseball America. Can't wait!

My wishlist (excluding consensus Top 15 guys):
1. Mason Denaburg – HS (FL) – RHP 2. Connor Scott – HS (FL) – CF 3. Logan Gilbert – Stetson – RHP 4. Greyson Jenista – Wichita St. – RF 5. Anthony Seigler – HS (GA) – C 6. Xavier Edwards – HS (FL) – SS/2B 7. Nick Schnell – HS (IN) – CF 8. Trevor Larnach - Oregon St. – OF 9. Grayson Rodriguez – HS (TX) – RHP 10. Triston Casas – HS (FL) – 1B
In a nutshell, I skew toward upside in Round 1 and Denaburg and Scott have plenty of that...they could also be gone in the Top 15. This is hard draft to peg down. I like Jenista the most out of the college bats because he's a deceptively decent athlete who should be able to decently field his position (likely RF), he walks a lot, and he has upside in that if his raw power (~65) can start to translate to game power, there could be middle-of-the-order potential there with a decent floor already. After that, I'm favoring HS picks mostly because I'm not thrilled about many of the other college guys.

I think the Sox should purposefully not sign their first round pick this year so they get another pick in next year's draft (next year's draft look MUCH better than this year). Sorry. Just getting that out of the way early.

Just getting that out of the way early. I disagree because they are trying to use this draft to rebuild after trades. If they want another pick next year I'd go with not resigning Pomeranz. Wright or Beeks could take his spot in the rotation.

Other than those listed in Mike's draft preview, here are some players that the Red Sox have reportedly had some interest in:
Triston Casas (6/1 workout at Fenway - Miami commit) Mike Siani (6/1 workout at Fenway - UVA commit) Luke Bartnicki (6/1 workout at Fenway - Georgia Tech commit) Mitchell Parker (met with Red Sox reps - Tennessee commit) Brady Allen (interest from Red Sox - South Carolina commit) Sean Guilbe (private workout - Tennessee commit)

Some late noise about Brice Turang to the Red Sox in recent mock drafts. Very interesting.

I really wonder if Mayo is right and the Sox have a Beer tonight.
Honestly I'd be very surprised if the Sox, lacking position players in the minors, drafted a DH, although I'm very intrigued by a potential monster in the middle of the lineup. I took a quick look - did I see 70s in his offensive tools?
I think the Sox will go after one of the SS in the first round and probably take a pitcher in the 2nd round.
With about half the teams probably passing on Beer due to defensive limitations does anybody here think he can last to pick 64 or even lower like pick 100?
I guess I have trouble seeing the Sox going with a guy with such defensive limitations when the rest of the positions are in need of upgrade, but am I crazy to hope the Sox can get themselves a Beer tonight?
I mean, I know the Sox need to find a starter who can actually start for them - what a concept, and they can use help in the outfield, SS, behind the plate and so many places.
I know so little about these guys but I really have come to love draft day, even when they're picking 26th. Correct me if I'm wrong but the last two time they picked this low they wound up with Marrero and Chavis? I still like Chavis and hope the Sox can do as well tonight.

The one thing I worry about with Seth Beer is that he turns into someone like Dan Vogelbach in Seattle, in the sense that he was stuck in the minors in Chicago and now cant seem to stick in Seattle despite his lofty power/hit tool. I get the sense its all about lack of positional diversity with Vogelbach and I think this is going to happen with Beer. I wont dislike the pick, but it will be key to get him in better shape to make him playable in the field at some point.

I wont dislike the pick, but it will be key to get him in better shape to make him playable in the field at some point. The Red Sox used the DH advantage heavily back in the aughts when they had both Ortiz and Manny (who played LF like a DH most of the time). So I can see the benefit of getting one of the best if not the best bats in the draft. But I'd be worried about using him as that first pick for the reasons you outlined plus the need all over the diamond and I wonder if because of his defense he'd slide down to possibly being there with the 64th pick (doubtful?). I've heard Turang linked with the Sox from the getgo - obviously if some of the shine hadn't worn off, he'd be viewed as somebody to go higher, but the talent he had to make scouts drool early on - if it's still there, that's hard to turn down with the 26th pick. And with the focus on Turang and Beer, watch them go in another direction! Looking forward to seeing the mystery unravel tonight.

So glad that we have people on here who are very knowledgeable on potential draftees....It makes the draft so much more interesting even when we pick late. Thanks for sharing!

I have read a number of reports that Beer struggled with a wooden bat. Potential red flag which may be why he is dropping so much.
The last few drafts have been disappointing so far in terms of production, recognizing that we need to give these draftees at least three years. The system needs talent, so it seems clear that they should draft the best player available regardless of their position. Hopefully Harold Reynolds is on sabbatical so that we don't have to listen to his dribble which is pretty clear that he does very little show preparation.

For those that are curious about Turang -- my understanding is that he had potential 1-1 buzz prior to this Spring. This year, he apparently still shows many of the same tools that made him an elite prospect, particularly on the defensive side. The issues this year seem to be that he's looked lethargic and unmotivated at times leading to some underwhelming performances. So who knows whats going on but it would be an interesting pick and wouldn't surprise me in that I think the Sox will select the most talented player available (barring serious makeup or injury concerns), and Turang could very well be that guy.

Since I don't have the bandwidth to follow all of that (I have my hands full enough with the guys in the system), I've just tried to save as much draft literature as possible over the past few months in order to reference it tonight.
