They're meant to be a lot less formal than other threads on the forum, so to moderate them the same way would be silly. However, we do ask posters to maintain a certain level of decorum in these threads, and we plan on moderating the Gameday threads a little more actively this season. In particular, we ask that posters refrain from being overly repetitive with their posts (if you've made your point, let it go), refrain from monopolizing the discussion (if you are making more than a couple posts in a row, you probably need to slow down a little bit), and of course, follow the Ground Rules ( link). The point is to make these threads worth participating in and fun for all posters, from our long-time fixtures to people just signing up today. -The Management

Have you been to Safeco? I was a big fan. And of Seattle of course.
It is kind of crazy that Felix Hernandez is finally on a playoff-quality team once he stops being good. Even when he had outstanding stuff, he had such good control and feel for pitching that I thought it would sustain him as a decent pitcher even when that stuff started to erode. He is (was?) probably like two good seasons away from having a good Hall of Fame case, but it's hard to see him getting there at this point. I hope I'm wrong and he's got a comeback in him, but I wouldn't mind if he could wait his start after this one.

I think the combination of guys being low ball hitters, trying to lift the ball, and also trying to get that bat angle to match his breaking balls, Sinker and change up. Also he's been around so long I feel like everybody is somewhat familiar with his pitching style and tricks. Just goes to show you the difference between 92 to 95 miles per hour, and 90 to 92 is for some guys

Fangraphs does project them for a wildcard spot... but also a sub-.500 record the rest of the way.

The Mariners are 20 games over .500 with a +27 run deferential. They are an amazing 21-9 in one run ball games. R.Elias is a typical example, 3 games in relief, 8 innings pitched and he has 2 wins. This has all the signs of a team feasting on weak AL West bullpens.

Yes, I've been living in Seattle for about 4 years (and lived in Portland, OR for another 3), so I always make sure to attend the Sox series. Its a nice place to catch a game.....I mean damn, you can get $6 cans of a good IPA. I miss Fenway, haven't been in a handful of years, but I'm grateful I get to see the team at least a couple games a year and was lucky enough to see Devers first pro hit/HR last year. Sidenote -- if anyone is ever passing through the Pac NW, drop me a line and we'll grab a beer and talk about.....sox prospects I guess.

That sweep of Baltimore really bought the Sox some wiggle room in Seattle. I would be perfectly satisfied with a split. Let's go.
Oh, and here is to Jackie breaking out. I am rooting so hard for the guy, as I love what he brings to the team and organization.

Update #272 on the long-term bullpen roster management ...
Brain Johnson's xWP- and WP- in his first 10 relief appearances (through May 11, more or less when I declared he could never pitch well in relief) and his last 9:
134 / 195 74 / 73. Now, this is driven by 0 HR allowed, but he has an 88 xFIP- and .302 BABIP, and that translates to better than average even with an average HR/FB.
The latter compares to Velazquez' 112 / 75 on the season. When Pomeranz comes off the DL, it's a no-brainer to send Velazquez down to Pawtucket and stretch him back out as a starter.
Meanwhile, Hembree has settled in at 87 / 82, and a #5 man in your pen who is better than MLB average is a Good Thing.
And right now he looks like he can be bumped down to #5 because Workman looks nasty.
So we're still in a position where you don't start thinking about moving Johnson or Hembree unless / until Thornburg is forcing his way into high leverage along with Workman.
Meanwhile, Kimbrel still ranks a mildly disappointing 5th among closers with 52 / 23 and Kelly is right behind him with 55 / 23, ranking a highly satisfying 5th among 8th inning guys. Barnes is 54 / 49 and still looks like the best 7th inning guy in MLB.
Joe Kelly's gmLI:
0.78 through 4/24 2.09 since.
2.13 Kimbrel on the season.

"here is to Jackie breaking out." ----------------------------------- He's facing Felix and two LHP (in 3/4 games). Not much expected there. RS "RHH lineup" isn't very formidable. It would be nice to be able to sub for one of the OF (Jackie) and 1B Mitch with a strong RHH in this series.

I think that says something about the Red Sox, Yankees, and Astros being very good, and also something about the fact that the American League only has six teams that aren't terrible. It's easier to get to 100 wins when you play the Orioles a lot.

Have you been to Safeco? I was a big fan. And of Seattle of course. My sister lives in Seattle and always goes to see the Sox when they visit. She's been to a few ballparks and says that outside of Fenway, Safeco is the best place to see a game. I've never been. Seattle is a nice city, but almost impossible to drive in... you always have to "turn left"...

The next day I went to the Fillmore for the first time (I located the box score of this game by looking up the date on the poster for that show, forgetting that I had a list on my hard drive).
Oh, and (just to bring this back on-topic) in December '04 I saw them open for the Pixies at the Tsongas Arena, standing in the crowd next to Lennie DiNardo, who you might remember used "Where Is My Mind?" as his entrance music. Them days ...
*Along with two of the band, bassist Clint Conley and tape-loopist Bob Weston, and Clint's brother / road manager Jimmy. I'm thinking Jimmy got the 4 tix when the tour was booked (taking advantage of a rare night off on the road. It was the only out-of-town game I got to see in the course of 7 mini-tours with them).

As someone who watched a lot of Mariners games this season here's my advice to the Sox pitchers: don't throw first pitch fastballs (At least not a strike if you have to throw one) to Gordon, Seguera or Healy because they'll ambush it. Other than that, I like our chances beside Paxton's game of course.

I got the chance to go to a Sox game at Safeco in 2016. I'll always remember it as the game before Benintendi made his MLB debut (womp womp).

I was there in the early 2000s but it wasn't a Red Sox game. The fan atmosphere reminds me of Coors Field which I also liked.
For me, the Giants have the best park overall on the west coast and the A's the worst.
For minors, I liked Lake Elsinore the most but mostly for the view (plus it's relatively new and clean looking), Palm Springs, the worst because there's no place for the fans to get out of the sun. I've been to a ton of minor league venues, most are structurally bad.

Yankees won 4-3 but I'll take the blame. I watched 1 AB, Torres 3 run HR.
