Jeez that last plate appearance was stressful. How about 7 insurance runs right now.

That was kind of gruesome. Caught the spikes on the dirt and they never let go.

Leg isn’t supposed to bend like that.
Best wishes to Jewell.

How often does Kimbrel sit this long between pitches?

A 4 hour 9 inning game. Ouch.

This one is not ending the way--better-- I had figured. Games this long usually end badly. July could be a very strong month if JBJ and Sandy run hot for a while and then cool to mediocrity (I'll take it), rater than black holes.

Since this game became competitive unfortunately, I say just let Johnson/Velasquez/Haley pitch tomorrow. I'd put Nunez in to pitch before any of Barnes/Kelly/Kimbrel.

Halfway through the season and the Red Sox are 54-27. .667 ball.
Also they're 6-3 in their last 9 (.667). And 10-5 in their last 15 (.667). And 24-12 in their last 36 (.667). And 26-13 in their last 39 (.667). Before that they were 28-14 to start the season (.667).

With using Kelly, Barnes and Kimbrel tonight, If the Sox can get a 9 inning win (and season Angel sweep) out of Johnson, Velazquez, Workman, Hembree and Haley tomorrow, the Sox will be pretty much in great shape going into the Yankee series and in first place.
ERod / Sabathia Sale / Gray Price / Sevarino
Even better if they use Haley then recall Poyner after the game.

The win wasn't pretty, but it was a win. The offense looks a lot different when the bottom of the order contributes. Nice to see that after they took a 2 month vacation.
That brings a close to one of the best halves of Red Sox baseball I've ever seen. 54-27 or as they say, 2 out of 3 ain't bad. .667 baseball all the way around, and in a weird twist, the Sox and Yankees are actually tied in winning pct as the Sox have the half game lead because of the extra 2 wins in the extra 3 games.
I hope the Sox complete the sweep. With Johnson starting and it probably being a bullpen game it'll probably be an uphill battle, but the Sox took the 2 games they needed to take against Anaheim, so if they win tomorrow it's gravy and allows them to remain tied if they lose 2 of 3. Otherwise if the Sox lose they go into NY tied.
Either way, it's been one helluva great first half. I've gotta say - JD Martinez ABs are must watch TV. It's kind of the first time I pause whatever it is I'm doing and watch a guy hit since Ortiz was around.
I used to pause when Yaz batted, Boggs batted, Ortiz batted, and now when JDM comes to the plate. I usually paused when Nomar batted, Manny batted, and when Mookie bats, but it's JDM's ABs that I can't miss.
He's got 25 homers in 81 games. I don't think he'll top Ortiz's 54 in 2006 but I think he can top Jimmie Foxx's 50 in 1938 and be the Sox all-time single season record holder for RH batters.

JDM is actually hitting better than Papi ever did in his best season which is just plain hard to believe. But he looks absolutely for real and that it's sustainable. He's not getting lucky at all.
I'm so amazed with how much work he puts in with video. He actually is able to stop cold streaks before they even start because he knows every single thing about his swing. They said on the MLB Network broadcast last night that he has different drills to fix 11 (I think?) different swing flaws. He also is teaching everyone else on the team to do this. The guy is such an incredible talent and might be the Brian Bannister of hitting already. He certainly could today be one of the best hitting coaches ever. He seriously should write a book about hitting.
I really wish there were no opt-outs in his contract because I want him in Boston for a long time.
