Pitiful display of offense tonight. I hope this isn't going to be a stretch where they go into an offensive funk with the MFYs coming to town.

How are you not going to pinch hit for Brock Holt there? He isn’t even playing in the field. You HAVE TO pinch hit for him there. It’s bad enough he’s the DH to begin with. Head scratcher

I will file that under “you can’t win ‘em all” and ne’er speak of it again.

Agreed - you can't win them all - but that was simply sad. Games like this are going to happen - at least we didn't waste a Sale or Porcello start with this sleepy offensive non-outburst.
Hoping Xander's hand is OK

Drew Pomeranz has no buisness pitching in the Major Leagues. Yes he gave up just 2 runs, but the stuff and the command are pretty garbage. I think they'll give him another start just because of Sale's injury but after that, I don't know what they'll do.

I can see why the Phils are leading their division if that is indicative of the starting pitching they've been getting this season. Hopefully Xander is ok. Really impressed with Swihart at the plate, in the field and on the bases.

Head scratcher Pretty sure he handles elite velocity really well. At least he did last time I checked. That may not have even been this year tbh, could’ve been a couple years ago. Combine that with the big hits he had yesterday and that’s why he was allowed to hit I would imagine Edit: I checked and he’s been v bad against power pitching this year so nvm lol

TBD - Price I'll be the one doing cartwheels in front of Fenway if they split the series without Sale and ERod. The bats are going to have to snap out of it and score some runs. You can never predict these series with the MFY as the games are always crazy.

Man, Brian Johnson and Nate Eovaldi against the Yankees in huge series. And Price seems to be legit against everyone but. Sigh. Their lineup is a video game lineup complete with oversized players and extreme strikeouts.
Hopefully Swihart never hits third again and Xanders hand is ok.

So true. Sox look a little tired right now after a long run. Good to get some rest for Mookie.
Wow the injury bug could not have come at a worse time. Give Xander a chance to recover please.
Kinsler at the plate 'looks' like he could do damage.

This team wins so freaking much that it's actually very depressing when they lose because it's such shock. Losses are so far and few between it's foreign, unfamiliar and strange. They win so often that every time they lose it's like "WTF is that!" "what's happening"

The loss does not bother me. The situation with Sale is extremely concerning and portends the whole season going down the drain. Yes it may be nothing serious. It may be a good thing with Sale getting some rest in a place where in the past he would have soldiered on. Or it could be worse than they are letting on.

Well, that was an uncomfortable 24 hour period.
First we find out that Dombrowski was honing in on one of the few impact relievers out there and the Nats decide that their dysfunctional group is going for it. Too bad for them they can't play the Mets everyday. So no Herrera for the pen.
Then Chris Sale doesn't quite feel right and he's not starting against the Yankees and I'm kind of holding my breath that whatever weirdness he's feeling subsides because without him they don't go anywhere in October.
Then Xander gets drilled by a 99 MPH pitch that has him very worried, and we know what happened last season when he got hit. His production tailed off dramatically.
In between the Sox played a game I really wasn't anticipating, but should have. I was all prepared for a non-descript 6-2 loss where you just shrug your shoulders and say, "Hey, like we really had a chance? At least they got the one they needed." Instead we get a game where with just one big hit the Sox could have won despite the disparity of the pitching matchup (and performance), and you kind of half expected that Kinsler would slam one over the wall or even Betts would perform heroics yet again, but instead you left feeling kind of empty.
That's a feeling most teams have a lot, but this year's Sox haven't normally been that way. Now that the game ended I'm back to worrying about Sale and now Bogaerts (who seems plenty concerned). I'm thankful that no MRI is needed for Sale, at least for now, and that Bogaerts' x-rays came back normal, but it's worrisome.
Now the Sox have to split the series with NY or else NY will be back breathing down their necks. I know Johnson has been surprisingly good, but that's a big comedown from Sale to Johnson, and I'm of the mind that if Bogaerts needs to take a couple of weeks to let his finger feel better, then let him. Don't want to see him toughing it out like he did last year and not hitting like he can. He's too important a bat to not let him do what he feels he needs to do to feel comfortable at the plate.
I forget where I read it, but Daisuke Pomeranz sounds about right. He's tough to watch. It was a minor miracle he only gave up 2 runs in 5 innings and the Sox had a real chance to win, but if he keeps pitching the way he's pitching, let's just say I'm a lot happier when he's not pitching. I'd like Sale back ASAP, but if Sale needs time, then Pomeranz really needs to figure it out or else they'd be crazy to start him over Johnson going forward once Sale is back.

The offense has been kinda blah since the ASB. Good to see the bottom of the lineup seem to come around but they have had a lot of 1 or 2 run outputs in the past two weeks.
I've become a bit suspicious of their ability to hang against real good pitchers. The ABs against Arrieta and Nola the past two days weren't all that encouraging. Hopefully they go out and put up a couple crooked numbers against Severino and co. this weekend and remove that doubt from my brain!

When they played the Astros in Houston they raised the Hard% allowed of nearly every pitcher they faced, most by a good margian. They would have taken three of those games if it weren't for terrible BABIP luck in game 1, and the sense we have of their performance against top teams would be rather different.

Yankee Series Matchups: Thurs. Sabathia - Johnson Fri. Severino - Porcello Sat. Happ - Eovaldi Sun. TBD - Price Both the Yankees' website and ESPN have Tanaka on Sunday. It's he's turn and he's coming off an excellent outing against the (cough) Orioles.
Also, Happ is likely but still questionable for Saturday with his children's disease, with Lance Lynn and Luis Cessa as the alternatives.
