Betts with 5 ugly swings. Mookie is not in a great place - pressing for some reason - he will come out of it soon, but it is shocking when it happens.

I know - it is Eck's fault - during a game last week, then O'Brien mentioned the upcoming trip to Tampa, Eck said something akin to playing in "that dump"
I've been to that dump and it is accurate. At least they seem to have lost the cowbells!

Yankees are going into extras the day before a doubleheader. They are also .500 against Baltimore this year. lol

They really need to move that franchise. The right choice would be Charlotte. However, I'm hoping they get it wrong and move it to Portland, OR - so I (and several other posters here) can see more games.

Weird stats time - in the 5-4 loss to Cleveland we had 4 runs on 13 hits. Tonight, 3 runs on 13 hits (ALL singles).

Ugly game.
Not sure why Cora kept in Velazquez so long. Not that I'd be eager to see Pomeranz but at that point you take the chance with the guy who'll probably be bad versus the guy who's already getting tattooed. I understand that if Pearce makes the play he's out of the inning, but he was getting hit pretty hard and often for the most part.
Ultimately it wouldn't have mattered. The Sox couldn't get the big hit to start a huge rally.
Pomeranz did well to eat up the innings. Can't say that I'd want any of those three pitchers, Velazquez, Pomeranz, or Kelly on a post-season roster.
Fortunately E-Rod comes back next week so eventually they don't have to start Pomeranz or Velazquez.
I think a little rest might do Mookie some good. He's lost about a dozen point off his average in the past week or so. The Sox can afford to rest him. Maybe just a couple of days off (near an off-day) to kind of recharge his batteries.
Cora can do that with the regulars in September: JDM, Bogaerts, and Benintendi.
It's too bad the O's blew their 4-2 lead. Their pen is brutal.
I hope the Sox can win tomorrow because they might get swept if they don't as Snell is a tough customer.

Looking at Mookie, he is amazingly still at .350 for August - he had a June swoon, but his consistency has been remarkable. He seems to have lost the strike zone a bit...and I am sure is pretty spent. As you say - some rest for key players would be good thing right now. Benny has lost his power and is similarly worn. Xander is raking, though!

Velazquez might not even make Dmaineah’s playoff roster now. Doesn't change a thing. Just bad luck with Pearce. He's the guy I want for 3 innings after Price Soils himself on the big stage.

Velazquez hasn't exactly been piling up the clean innings lately. He's been getting hit hard for awhile now. He's pretty much escaped most of the trouble, but this time the roof caved in on him with help from Pearce not getting the grounder and Cora with the slow hook. I honestly think with more exposure he'd be a guy with an ERA up near 5. If the Sox need long relief they'll have either Eovaldi or E-Rod in the pen come post-season and I have a feeling Johnson makes the pen, too, so I don't think that they need Velazquez. That plus Eovaldi, E-Rod, and Johnson are flat out better pitchers than Velazquez. I don't think you could have given Johnson's starts to Velazquez and have expected him to keep you in the game the way Johnson has or provide the length. Velazquez is a fringy up-and-down spot starter/long reliever. He's done a good job all in all, but definitely not somebody I'd want on my playoff roster.

So it looks like we have an off day next week, can we just skip the Velazquez start and start Porcello on normal rest? Then we can start Eovaldi Friday and rosters expand Saturday/Erod comes back?

Velazquez' xFIP is 4.70 and his SIERA is 4.56 so you're not far off. His best quality is keeping the ball on the ground. But he doesn't strike out nearly enough guys to be a good pitcher. But he's still quite valuable to us despite that. Just not in the playoffs.

So far there has been little political support. It isn't a hot issue here. Housing prices and traffic congestion are big issues. Counting the rapidly growing suburbs, Portland is about the size of Baltimore. We would have to have a domed stadium.

Not sure what’s up with Benintendi but he’s missing low 90’s fastballs that are over the plate.

When our top of the line up guys are off at the same time, the offense really sputters.

Needed strike three on the previous hitter. That should have been a K, caught stealing, out of inning. Instead, the based are loaded because the ump can’t do his job.
Time for bots.
