Sale was actually encouraging today. He gave up almost nothing hit hard and was up to 95. He started missing spots later, but threw a lot of pitches in the 3rd and 4th. You’re treating the guy like he’s some rookie making his 3rd start ever. The fact he got to 95 a couple times was better than his last start but he had one swing and miss. Nothing encouraging about that unless you’re just clamoring for a viable starting pitcher then sure it was encouraging. Whatever. I knew this was going to be a problem heading into the season because of how much everyone pitched last October. I'll still take it. What else can anyone do?

There's a saying that you can't win a division in April, but you can certainly lose a division in April. The Sox will be testing this unless they comeback here.

The effort the guys put in was going to have some effect.

I think he's a pretty good defensive catcher, and I'm absolutely not going to bother trying to convince you of that. You should follow games more closely then. Vazquez was 14th of 117 catchers last season defensively according to BP.

Hembree in a 1-run game. I’m just gonna go do something for a while.

You can’t really do much, but this isn’t just a slow start.... and I’m not just talking about Sale. These guys aren’t ready to play - this is atrocious.

To be honest after the start of his career I'm quite surprised he's not still cream of the crop when it comes to framing. Although I do understand he was part of the beginning of that trend, and he in many ways still is "cream of the crop" I like Vazquez, really grateful we have a player like that. Glad he's going to be around (hopefully) for a few years. Gotta have trust with pitchers, and seems like a future coach in some capacity as well.

The post season is way too long. The rest of the league gets an extra month of rest.

Both can be true. Going till the end of October is going to wear on any team - there’s a reason no one has repeated in baseball in a long time. Combine that with an 11-game road trip to start the year, and it’s a tall task.
But this team was also thoroughly unprepared to start the season. They need to do better.

The bar is average. 0 runs above or below average. Why is this so hard for you to understand? He was 14th of 117 defensively including arm, framing and blocking. That's a good defensive catcher regardless of the number of times you jump on here to bash him when he makes a bad play. You aren't noticing the rest of his plays. That's why we look at data - to remove bias. This is data by BP, which IMO is the best measure of catcher defense. If you want to come up with some new defensive metrics that see Vazquez how you want to see him, feel free. Otherwise, just accept that you're wrong. It's ok.

The problem with Vasquez is he needs to be elite since he sucks with the bat.

I really hope they don't lose this game. That would suck if it dampened spirits that had to be sky high with the ring ceremony. Then you watch the Red Sox have another day of bad starting pitching and offense that just can't seem to break out.
It was said once the Sox got home things would fix themselves but at the moment things look the same as they did on the road. It's a shame.
