Curious. If Pedroia decides he physically can't play anymore, is there any way he can retire and still get paid the rest of his contract but not have those amounts count against the Red Sox for salary purposes? Could he retire as a player, but then sign as a coach for what he would have made as a player?
The Red Sox could use the cap relief and it certainly seems like Pedroia's playing career might be over.

The Sox could sign him to some sort of long term front office or coaching position. I don't know why he would not agree. It would basically be like taking the money and spreading it out over a longer period of time. It would be a nice gesture as he's (through no fault of his own) collected his salary for two years without being on the field much.

It's way too early to make that call. It was a minor twisted knee and they will reconfigure the bracing that he wears. On the other hand, a few years ago Ryan Dempster retired, forgoing his year's salary and the Sox generously donated an amount equal to his salary to a foundation he ran.

Hembree or Thornburg. If we had the option to remove one from the roster who goes first? I think they need to hang in on Thornburg. His velocity and stuff seem to be coming back. Hembree is more of a known commodity. BTW. I for one, like how Cora uses his pieces. He does not build the roster and he has to use what he's got to work with. You don't carry a guy and not use him. It isn't just a wasted spot it hurts the other players as they can become worn down. I have just about run out of patience with Brewer. Intriguing arm but zero control and command.

Brewer has options, time to burn one. Also, it isn't like we are hurting for 40 man space -- cutting Hembree or Thornburg (despite both currently a suckfest), seems premature. Both are capable of being at least meh. Unless the rest of the team starts being competitive, dumping either seems pointless. Possibly gratifying, however?

Well, I'll stop complementing Porcello. Clearly that isn't working.

I'd like to see our pitching staff's ERA in the inning after being granted a lead...unreal.

There’s absolutely no way that a team that cares about winning will keep Nunez on the roster over Chavis.
