Red Sox select Jaxx Groshans, C, Kansas. Wow, I was (half-jokingly) going to say we need to draft a catcher soon. Oh well, what's done is done.

While my Rebels were sniped, not bad with Groshans, a bonus for being Zeferjahn battery mate, like it, younger bro was drafted in the 1st round last yr by the Blue Jays, and is looking like a future star. I thought today would be a college heavy day, and am enjoying these picks so far. It worked with Scott Hatteberg, who caught Aaron Sele in college.

Idk what his bonus demands are, but maybe the Sox pick up Ethan Hearn and go overslot if they manage some savings with Song. Hearn sounds like he’ll stick and be a solid defender behind the plate, but there are questions about the hit tool. Seems like a candidate for a systematic swing change and the sort of player who’d benefit from the Sox’s organizational hitting philosophy. There are 8 catchers remaining in the top 138 (MLB) and I'm sure a few to round out the top 200 and I'd be happy with any of them. I'd probably see Dunhurst/French before Hearn. I don't think Boston has enough bonus money left for another top 100 guy. They went C but not quite the direction I was hoping. It might just be bias from anecdotal evidence, but it seems to me like college catchers wash out...a lot. Catching is really thin in MLB and I’d’ve liked to see them take a risk on some upside. That said, maybe he and Zeferjahns grow together. Really, I’m just hoping on plus defense and a vaguely viable bat.

If Chris Murphy signs, will Connecticut have to hold a special election for his Senate seat?

“Murphy showed swing-and-miss stuff but also shoddy control in the Cape Cod League last summer. He elevated his draft stock with a dominant turn at the front of San Diego’s rotation this spring, but wildness continues to afflict him. Murphy boasts an attractive power arm from the left side. He sits 90-91 mph on his fastball and can ramp up to 94-95 mph, pitching in and out and elevating for swings and misses. His breaking ball is alternately referred to as a power curveball or slider and draws above-average grades, and his average changeup is an effective third pitch. Murphy’s stuff allows him to miss bats and keep runs off the board, but he gets into a lot of deep counts and falls into long innings because of below-average control. He walked more than six batters per nine innings this spring, with 15 hit batters on top of it. Murphy has the stuff to start, but his control may push him to the bullpen. Evaluators are split on his eventual outcome but want him regardless.” www.google.com/amp/s/www.baseballamerica.com/stories/top-southern-california-2019-mlb-draft-prospects/%3famphtml

Big fan of the aptly named Spencer Brickhouse's power potential, even without much else.

Note on Murphy: He's listed by MLB.com as a senior but listed just about everywhere else as junior. I'm pretty sure he's a junior (someone correct me if I'm wrong) so this is not a senior sign to my knowledge.

He's a junior. Just listened to an interview with him. Said he's been up to 96 in front of scouts and he was advised not to do individual workouts after the season.

His stats show only three seasons so he probably is a junior. He throws hard and wild.

Bell is ranked 192 by Perfect Game.

Looks like Bell pitched 23, 2, and 13 (3 BB, 23 K) innings last last 3 years. Jay Bell's kid.

Brock Bell had TJ in 2018 and only threw 13 innings this season. He's seen as a "pure arm strength reliever" according to Perfect Game.

Bell had a 23/3 K/BB ratio, but batters hit .315 against him.

So, other than Song (which isn't a typical situation) are they going without Sr Signs?
- Cannon and Lugo could offset each other - Some savings from Song
Do they just go chalk for the last 3 slot rounds and then use the Song savings to snag a couple of those previously referenced 200-500K guys? Is that a "new" way to handle such a small pool?
EDIT - and the 5% overage as well.
