Chatham's getting added to the 40 this offseason, so I don't see the harm in giving him some run.

Chatham's getting added to the 40 this offseason, so I don't see the harm in giving him some run. Absolutely Among the bench candidates of Chatham, Holt, Lin and Marco, I wonder if: 1. Marco is the best trade candidate because of his bat? 2. Holt, if he doesn’t get a big contract elsewhere, is the best candidate to build the bench around because of his very rare IF/OF versatility, strong hit tool, veteran presence, mentorship, clubhouse glue, community activism, Grif, etc. He is a good example of a fan favorite Sox lifer? 3. Lin’s growing versatility, excellent defense, speed, team control, and connection with Liu makes him more valuable to the Sox than Marco? 4. Chatham’s best use (along with Duran) is to start the year as legit depth in AAA?

To me, the only thing Chatham has over Lin is that he bats right handed. Lin is more versatile, faster, takes walks, a better defender and has a better bat.
With Chatham the hope was that given his size, power would come. We're still waiting.

With Chatham the hope was that given his size, power would come. We're still waiting. Such incredibly variable considerations for Bloom. If his job description includes resetting the cap in 2020, he could keep JD or Mookie and bring up all the AFL and other next wave “kids”. 1. A bench of Lin, Chatham, Duran or Ockimey; 2. Dalbec at 1B, Chavis at 2B; 3. Darwinzon, Taylor, Lakins, Feltman as RP; 4. Houck as #5 SP or as longman in place of Johnson or Velasquez. But that team is simply not ready; and depth would be sooo thin. IMO better to re-sign MM and Holt reasonably. MM as 1B/DH with Dalbec as RHB. A bench of Holt, Lin, Chatham. However, it is likely the 2020 Red Sox and Pawsox will look very little like the 2018/2019 versions.

Chatham is better defensively than Lin. Particularly his arm - the difference in their abilities to make the throw from the hole is striking.

I haven't been overly impressed with Chatham's range and with shortstop and third base pretty much locked up, I'd take Lin over Chatham for how they would likely be used. Everyone has a different opinion so I'm not saying I'm right you are wrong, just an opinion relative to where they are most likely to find playing time. Lin's ability to play the outfield is an added bonus.

Per Crockett to Jen McCaffrey on The Athletic, Wilson's injury was hamstring tightness.

At 6'4" it takes him about 3 steps to get to a ball which would take Lin 4 (assuming good footwork for both), that often makes big shortstops look like they have less range. Hopefully they both make the bench in 2020 and fight for playing time.

Yeah... I suppose that's what happens when they need to confer breakout status on like 12% of the league.
