Only issue with draft pick trading would be the whole slot value thing if they kept that. Yes, trading back you'd acquire more picks, but you'd also have to acquire more slot value money in doing so to account for now having more guys to sign. Would think the solution to that would be you acquire the slot with the draft picks. For example, you trade a 1st for a 2nd and a 3rd. You lose the slot money associated with the 1st (similar to if you fail to sign the player), and then you gain the slot money associated with the 2nd and 3rd round picks. I suppose it's more complicated in the budgeting department and with planning your draft pool spending, but the basic idea feels simple enough. I get that idea, but my point is that, say, if you traded one pick for two picks that, combined, equal the same slot value, you now have the same amount of money and another player to sign. You'd have to increase your total bonus pool accordingly, and that would make trades much more complicated. Just saying it'd be complicated, not impossible. To use the example sitting in front of us, if Yorke and Jordan are going to take roughly $4.5M to sign between them, then the Red Sox couldn't have traded back unless they were gaining enough cap money to sign the player with the extra pick they got.

"so they effectively traded the 17th overall pick and their mid-third-rounder for two second-round picks"
This puts a lot more succinctly what I've been thinking and trying to say. Not sure how this way of putting it eluded me.

The draftees were added to Fangraphs' Red Sox rankings. Blaze at 19, Yorke at 25, Wu-Yelland at 36, and Drohan at 38.

When is the deadline for the 4 draftees to sign? I was hoping to hear of at least one of them officially signing by now...not much other baseball excitement going on.

Don't love their list right now, honestly (really strange choices like having Groome way down at 15 behind guys like Bello and Liu who are less than a year younger than him), and these rankings feel crazy pessimistic (while they have Wu-Yelland way higher than I would). For us, Jordan and Yorke probably wind up in the 10-16 range, Drohan somewhere in the back of the top 30 or just outside, and Wu-Yelland in the 50-ish range.

Highly recommend the interview Ray Fagnant did with the New England Baseball Journal. Lots of insights into the Red Sox draft process, the players selected, and the UDFA process. www.baseballjournal.com/podcast/

Anyone know what's going on with undrafted FAs after Rd. 5? Undrafted FAs can be signed for $20K or less...no limit on how many can sign. Seems like as good of a time as any to be a team that pays their minor leaguers more than the rest of the league. I just enjoyed looking back over the COVID thread. I’ve been AWOL so long I thought “11 notices?!” Lol, good times...this pandemic is so much my back (critical care med and viral immunology) that it’s been very...engaging. I’m glad I’m not in clinical practice anymore, because it was a horror show up in MA. Feds blew six weeks doing zilch. They killed baseball. One of my friends from ME (NY fan if you can imagine) actually knows way more about what’s going on with the Sox than me. I’ve no interest. It’s weird...as soon as I saw Eddie had viral myocarditis and was out for the year I said “f*ck it I’m done.” But now that the draft is over and it looks like they might get the 1 next year...did they sign any intriguing FAs? And how good really has their haul been trade-wise? Like, do we know the PTBNLs (roughly?) or who the extra Int’l $ is going to? This year is bizarre...but I’m at least getting curious about next year.

Well, I found a few answers. I made the classic blunder, aside from the whole land war in Asia thing. You can ignore that request unless you feel like doing a solid and encapsulating why this totally lost year isn’t totally lost at all, lol.
