Luis Rojas will be the new Mets manager, per Heyman. That means Meulens is still in play for the Sox.

Sixth father/son MLB manager combination in history, and the first non-US-born.

My guess is the Sox under Bloom will go all in with analytics. We'll see a lot of what the Rays have been doing. That means they will look for a manager who is compliant and won't have any problem with the decisions getting passed down from the booth above the field. Likely a player friendly cheerleader type. I do dread seeing every player in the lineup having an "ie" added to his name although Mookie will escape this. So get ready for; Salesie, Davie, Raphie, Vazie, Pricie, etc.. Bogey is kind of cool though. At least for us old folks. I don't like labels like Pricie either, but given his contract Pricey seems appropriate.

For reference, the Kotsays are well known for community service and get lots of press for same. They play a lot of charity softball. There are also several articles about their family.

For reference, that's the kind of post that makes you look like a dirty old man. If finding an attractive woman appealing then that fits. I was checking out Mark Kotsay on the inet and came across multiple articles about their family with pictures of Jamie so I must not be the only one on the planet. Here's the article that pic was from: lobshots.com/2011/11/15/padres-sign-jaime-kotsay-oh-and-shes-bringing-her-husband-mark/

I'm just gonna go ahead and nip this one in the bud. Discussion of baseball qualifications only, please.

Does it make sense to hire a manager with the Betts stuff unresolved? If you trade Mookie and punt on next season, it might be better to hire a guy with experience to transition to youth.

As has been stated multiple times in the other thread, trading Betts isn't punting on 2020, so no, that shouldn't affect the hire. Either way, it's not like they're hiring someone to manage for one season here, so the construction of the current roster shouldn't really play into it beyond the fact that they're trying to compete, so hire the guy that best does that.

I agree with that but there also has to be an element to the manager that wouldn't normally be a factor but not because of Betts, because of the cheating scandal. They will need a manager that can not only deal with that but also has a positive public personna to protect the Red Sox brand name. In a way, the Sox were lucky that they were caught at about the same time as the Astros because the Astros are taking all the most hated team in baseball heat. Hiring Dusty Baker was exactly what they needed, nobody is likely to think that Dusty will cheat. Fortunately, the Sox won't have to go to that kind of extreme.

Interesting, its certainly a longshot but does this news maybe leave the door a tiny bit open for Cora to come back?

Interesting, its certainly a longshot but does this news maybe leave the door a tiny bit open for Cora to come back? No. He's gone because of his role in the Astros scheme. They explicitly said as much. The Twitter speculation I saw that makes more sense is of they're going with Roenicke or Febles, too make sure they're not implicated in a problematic way before hiring them.

I take this as a decent sign the penalties from the "scandal" won't be bad. Febles is interesting and he's gotten a lot of credit for his work with Devers' defense.
