It’s a pending UFA reliever due for major regression whipping 1.80 this year (and imo is pitching like thats an accurate number for him) and Heath Hembree, not sure what people were expecting for a return but honestly a change of scenery guy w great stuff and a solid starting pitching prospect ain’t too shabby Pivetta?

Seabold's numbers are great--goid control and misses bats, so I wonder if somthing makes that fastball play up. And if there's something they see in Pivetta as a buy-low guy, I am down with that. Bittersweet trading Workman though. Feels like they shouldn't have needed to swallow so much salary on such a straightforward trade but I will leave that to the experts. Yes but what is $900,000 in the greater scheme? We have probably seen the best of Workman and Hembree is serviceable but not a stud muffin. We got younger. Seabold is a control pitcher, no outstanding pitches but with low whip....maybe a Porcello type starter? Pivetta has shown little with a very high ERA but is young. It seems we took a flyer on his youth and stuff in the hope that we can extract something of value thru analysis and development. Bloom is not a guy to stand still and I like the aggressive approach.

He should fit right in. He has a 5.50 career ERA with a FIP of 4.64 and a WHIP of 1.43.
We didn't give up much and didn't get much. The trade is a big yawn.

from redsox Twitter account The #RedSox today traded RHPs Brandon Workman and Heath Hembree and cash considerations, along with a player to be named later or cash considerations, to the Phillies, in exchange for RHP Nick Pivetta and minor league RHP Connor Seabold.

Sounds more like we got a poor man’s Clay Buchholz and a guy who might develop into a right-handed Brian Johnson.

Umm... bad as his numbers are, dude is no worse than our #3 starter right now. And that is an impressive montage.

Why not? Move two 30+ guys near free agency for two cost-controlled arms in their 20s. We knew the return wouldn’t be massive, so this move works for me.

And.... much as people might think I’m a pessimist, I like this trade and don’t get the issue. Let’s remember how many times we bitched about Hembree! And Workman is a quick rental. How much did people think we’d get. Two pitchers with upside who we can roll out nearly immediately? That’s pretty solid.

It’ll be interesting to see where Seabold slides in the rankings. He’s trending upwards and is not too far from the majors. The optimist in me looking at his AFL performance and the scouting report on him from recently puts him around the Aldo, Murphy, Zeff area. I wouldn’t put him any lower than 25 around Bello, Jorge Rodriguez, and Chi-Jung Liu.

I would imagine that there is a fair chance the Sox bring Workman back in FA if he doesn't "cash in".

You always want a HR, yet this seems solid. At worst it's starting pitching depth for the future and we needed that.

Seabold seems to be the real target, and Pivetta a bit of a lottery ticket.

Honestly, in Bloom we trust with both of these guys. No, not at all I don't have trust or mistrust for Bloom as of yet, but I do know one thing - I do trust his judgment a helluva lot more than yours, but that's not saying much. You can't expect much for a month of Workman and Hembree but my initial thought was they did reasonably well in the deal. I was looking at Pivetta's numbers and they're better than I thought they were given how crappy his ERA is. The K/BB ratio is there and he gets the Ks. He's not overly wild. The problem is obvious. Way too many HR balls given up. He's definitely a victim of his time, with all those HRs flying out of the park. I don't know how he cuts that down in this era but if he does, then there could be something there. Seabold sounds like he could help them whether it's as a back end starter or a reliever. My guess is he winds up an 8th inning guy, but we'll see.

Seabold would have to slot into the Sox' system ahead of Houck and Ward, no?

I remain wait-and-see on Bloom, but I definitely give him props for this. Turning two relievers into two guys who might be starters is worth a go. If even one of these guys is a 4/5 starter, that is pretty good.
Let’s not forget how we’ve been discussing numerous empty slots... fill one without giving away longterm pieces or spending big? Sweet.
