Interesting claim by Astros beat reporter McTaggart: The issue with the Astros re-signing Brantley is he needs to get significant at-bats at DH at this point in his career. They have a full-time DH in Yordan Alvarez, so on days Brantley is lineup at DH, Alvarez would have to sit Brantley's use last year, broken down by chunks of games, with OPS"
5: 4 LF, 1 DH (1.160) -- injured at 1B in collision with Joe Kelly --
12: 0 LF, 8 DH, 3 off (1.178 first 4, .352 final 6)
10: IL (includes Alvarez's only 2 games of the year)
4: 0 LF, 3 DH, 1 off (.545)
9: 4 LF, 5 DH (1.101)
12: 9 LF, 3 DH (.807)
8: 2 LF, 5 DH, 1 off (.729)
This doesn't look like a guy who fits that description. It looks like a guy who had one nagging injury that wasn't helped by being relegated to DH and also hurt him at the plate, plus a guy who got worn down by playing 27 straight games at age 33.
Injuries that keep him out of LF are obviously a concern, but at his age, just plain over-use is a much bigger issue. Being reduced to a platoon role would be perfect for him.
He had +1 Outs Above Average in just 158 innings in LF, his best defensive performance in several years.
Before his last 2 seasons, he actually hit well as a DH in small scattered samples. The last 2 years it seems as if he's been DH'd when hurting, and he hasn't hit well there. It seems like he can do the job when healthy, which is a plus.
Maybe the problem with re-signing Brantley is that he's never hit well in that ballpark, and the team has become the most hated in baseball, and therefore (like Springer), he wants to go elsewhere?
But if that's the case, then this is an Astros leak designed to hide that fact. I don't think anyone in a front office is buying it.
I mean, seriously, on those days, why would you keep the 34 y/o Brantley in the lineup and sit Alvarez, who's 24 and the better hitter?

Browne: The Red Sox are looking for young pitching -- either cost-controllable at the Major League level or prospects. Pitching, pitching, more pitching. That's what this organization needs. Starting and relief. They also need a second baseman. They haven't had one since Manny Machado crippled Dustin Pedroia's left knee in 2017. They'd also like outfield prospects. Never forget!

Trying to connect some dots and maybe this is out of left field, but once the Cardinals popped up in McCadam's report, I immediately thought of Matthew Liberatore who Bloom had in his system in Tampa Bay. That and along with a Harrison Bader in a package, is interesting. Maybe you have to include Vazquez or maybe you agree to take most of Carlos Martinez's contract. There's ways of getting to that point of getting a Liberatore. I don't think Benintendi alone gets you to that point. www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/01/yadier-molina-rumors-retire-cardinals.htmlSo Molina could retire, leaving the Cardinals without a primary catcher.......Vazquez could be very much in play with these talks.

Well, then we wouldn’t have a catcher. Bloom isn’t with the Rays anymore. The Red Sox should be trying to compete every spring. If things look gnarly in July, then we can talk about moves like this.

If there's anything we can learn from Bloom and the Ray's when he was there, it's that the catching position has been interchangeable for them the past decade. They have been cycling catchers for years there.

Yup, wouldn’t shock me if they move Vazquez in a Benintendi deal depending on the team involved I could absolutely see them rolling with something like a Castro-Plawecki platoon

What's the source on that? Just searched and couldn't find anything. I no longer have the link, but it was rumored at the time pretty widely. I recall Dombrowski saying something about Benintendi being a big part of the team’s future. I mean, the 2018 season roster building thread has no mention of this rumor that I can find. Seems odd if it were a widely reported rumor. There's not even anything I can find in the trade proposal subforum.

To add, most of the teams mentioned (Astros, Cards, and Phils) could use Vazquez at the moment.

It does point out the on-field collision (with a player who got suspended for his antics!) which hampered him for an entire month.
They write:
"But if injuries to his lower half continue to limit him this season, the Astros will have to think long and hard about whether they can afford to give him a new contract. They can’t make him the DH as long as Alvarez is on the roster."
As noted, the injury did not "continue to limit him." Once he started playing LF again he was great for his first 9 games, then slowly faded to good as he wore down from getting zero days off.
This is apparently the first "lower half" injury of his career, so the injury bothering him for the rest of the year (even if it had!) would have no relevance at all for next season.
Alvarez, as I noted, got hurt after playing 2 games and never played again. He and Brantley were never on the active roster simultaneously.
So this is a blog post that speculated incorrectly and didn't have a rational argument even if it had been correct.

maybe you guys are right about Vasquez and Beni....but the price will go up substantially, if that is the case. Doesn't seem the kind of deal for an offseason acquisition. Maybe during a playoff run.
Add: As Canseco said, Bloom doesn't appear to be punting on 2021

Add: As Canseco said, Bloom doesn't appear to be punting on 2021 Trade Vazquez and Benny for prospects. Sign Realmuto and X outfielder. Can improve on 2 positions. In long run hopefully have more better prospects closer to the MLB. All you are out is $. Sox have that. I don’t see why a team that can at all afford to spend wouldn’t spend in a depressed market( asuming it is). As for the luxury tax, the Sox are reset. And with the new CBA coming we have no idea how that will all shake out. I’m not saying overpay or go crazy years but this might be a great opportunity to increase talent at lower than market cost.

... Brantley had ankle surgery in October of 2017 after it bothered him for the last couple of months of the season and he only played 90 games that year; the quad problem was not "the first "lower half" injury of his career." I guess you're right; people do make mistakes on fan sites. www.mlb.com/news/michael-brantley-has-right-ankle-surgery-c259052306www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/10/michael-brantley-undergoes-ankle-surgery.htmlThe shoulder surgery in 2016, the ankle surgery in 2017 and the quad injury in 2020, they are a concern. The collision was a freak thing, but did it do damage?

I guess if the money and term dropped low enough he'd be worth being in contact with but I doubt it does for my preference.

I don’t see them forfeiting a pick to sign a catcher to a long term, big money deal Rosenthal already told the world that the Astros aren't going after a QO free agent. I think they lose 2 picks and they already lost the first 2 of the next draft because of the trashcan scandal. The Cardinals are on a strict budget. Who knows what place the Phillies are at spending wise? They probably have the best shot at Realmuto.

The collision was a freak thing, but did it do damage? Well, health stuff can be evaluated by doctors. My hesitation is signing a 34-year-old to replace our 27-year old. While I agree Bloom is not necessarily punting on this season, there has yet to be, er, even a first down, much less a hail mary. So if they trade Beni, sign Brantley and Kluber, they’ve gotten more expensive, older, but still not likely good enough this year. My point is NOT to poopoo the idea. But there would have to be more going on in the back room to make it worth it (and there might be,, but spare me the In Bloom We Trust certitude). And it still leaves us short an outfielder, but that is a semi-separate matter.

I don’t see them forfeiting a pick to sign a catcher to a long term, big money deal Personally, I’d be stoked to get Realmuto. Vazquez easily has enough value to replace the second round pick+. He’s the best C in baseball. He’s a guy you can build around.

Due to age, the best at his position, and the contract isn't a absolute killer. 5 or 6 years at around 125 million? Perfect. That's about what he's projected to get. Realmuto is worth the pick guys. Don't go too crazy about draft picks. I don't see it happening, however. Just not the time to get a Realmuto it seems. Trevor Story or Kris Bryant is available next winter, too.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d love Realmuto. And I do think the idea of getting prospects for Vazquez to replace the 2nd is attractive
I guess it comes down to
A) how much they like this draft and are willing to mess around with the draft pool
And
B) if catcher is a position Bloom is willing to pay a premium for. Going off of his history with the rays that would be a no- but that could just be a Rays thing.
In a vacuum Realmuto is easily worth a 2nd. It’s just a matter of if they think that is the best way for us to use assets- I’m not so sure it is but I’m not going to be disappointed either way. I like what they’ve done so far, I’ve got faith in Bloom making the correct decisions
Now to tie this back to Benintendi if they get a young pitcher for him and a couple top 10 prospects for Vazquez I’d be thrilled with a Realmuto signing. I just honestly have no idea what they are going to do....gonna be a fun month and a half
