Um. What? I'm not used to a world where the Red Sox trade with the Yankees. Wow.

It looks like the articles about them looking to move Ottavino reference his $9m hit against luxury cap. Must be more coming with him, money or prospects, no?

Promising. $9 mill beats Yates’s contract with as much or more upside. If this is a Yankee salary dump, it might come cheap. Likely my favorite move of the off season if the attached prospect(s) are worth a fig.

So are we giving anything back, or just footing the bill?

ITS A TRAP!!!!!
But seriously, wow, shocking. Looks like the Yanks were right up against the tax threshold and also seems like they're trying to bring back Gardner which would necessitate a move like this.

If they're getting a prospect of any value they're just footing the bill.
Best part about this is I feel like Ottavino fits the bullpen pretty well.

Let's hope we're getting the 2018 and 2019 version of Ottavino and that last year was an aberration. Very interested to see what type of prospect the yankees gave the sox and how much money they threw in. The 9 million luxury tax value would only give them about 6 million left to the luxury tax cap.

German was listed as the #33 prospect on the Fangraphs NYY 2020 list:

AO had a weird year last year ERA of 5.89 but a FIP of only 3.52; 12.3 K/9!; 4.4 BB/9; Shy-high WHIP of 1.58.
I'm dying to know who the prospect is. I don't expect anyone huge. But AO will be in the last year of his deal. If he's decent and we're out of the race at the deadline, he gets flipped.

German. Oh well, I wasn't expecting much. But AO has value.

That was nice of the Red Sox to help the Yankees with their luxury tax issues. I guess that means that they'll bring back Gardner and sign a reliever on the market to replace Ottavino and still have some money left over for July 31st.
I've always like Ottavino but I sure wouldn't want him to close. Way too many walks for my comfort level. It's like the Sox have doubled down on Matt Barnes guys who can't throw strikes late in the game.
I hope that German kid they acquired can be a potential closer. Hope he makes it worth their while.

I should add that AO pitched only 18 innings in 2020, so his numbers probably don't mean a ton. I didn't realize he was that light on innings.

Ottavino's pERA the last 3 years: 2.46, 3.30, 4.36.
If that's an actual trend, that's obviously bad. But a standard 3-2-1 weighting (also by IP) gives a 3.34 projection, which is better than Barnes' 3.65. You trust that they've looked at him and think it's he latter. Barnes had a 5.43 pERA last year and no one is putting much stock in that.
The best part of this is that the Yankees just dumped salary to stay under the tax limit, and we took on the salary.
I trust some heads are exploding.
6 down, 2 to go. CF and LH 1B, and Moreland is so obvious for the latter that the only open question is JBJ.

With German being a high risk 40 FV in most outlets, I'm curious if he'd fit into the top 25 (or top 20) on Soxprospects' List?
