So two observations. One is, just look at his reaction. I don't think he's demanding over slot after seeing that.
Two, I never even considered the possibility of him falling to us. It's about the only pick that could have been better than House.

Insanity that he fell to us.
Let's go. Wanted Leiter so badly because I never in a million years thought Meyer would be available for us.

From Athletic …. The COVID-19 pandemic squashed Mayer’s junior campaign and the rising senior opted to skip much of the summer showcase circuit. Instead, he stayed at home in Chula Vista. “Usually after high school season, summer ball starts right after and you don’t really have time to work out,” Mayer said. “I used that time to just hit the weight room, try to get stronger, faster, more flexible, which ended up helping me in the long run.”

I'm sure Josh Labandeira was one of the scouts there and I trust that guy blindly 😅

Can we get an emergency podcast? Not an emergency: they planned a brief one.

100% the best player in the draft. I can not believe teams passed him over. Great night for the red sox.

Can we get an emergency podcast? Not an emergency: they planned a brief one. "Chris Hatfield Chris HatfieldSupporters on Patreon (https://bit.ly/2Js5t2y ) will get access to a short reaction this evening, which will go live to the regular stream tomorrow afternoon. Recording shortly."

We guessed something like $7.5M.
We'll know pretty quick on Monday what they're doing. Rounds 2 and 3 are really the only spots they can save that kind of money. Slot plus 5% is basically $7M ($6,997,200 I think).

5 percent of the total bonus pool of $11,359,600 is $567,980. If they use the full 5% they could get to $7,227,980 or a little above 3rd slot $. They can easily save enough to get close to $7.5 with the late 9th and 10th pick and stay on value for picks 2 through 8. This of course leaves no excess over $125,000 for picks 11 to 20.
I think $7.25 might get it done. Leaving between $200,000 and $250,000 potential savings with a few senior signs to spread around. I don’t think this necessarily precludes them from going slot on pick 2 because of the 5% extra. I think they may go under at 2 more for the ability to get a few more values in a deep draft with the later picks.

I think it's likely Bloom probably had a read (Davis) on Pitts. since Friday and the same with #3 Detroit with Jobe. That left #2 Texas to either take Mayer and leave the RS Leiter or vice versa. Either way Bloom makes out well but if I had a choice it would be Mayer. Whether the GM feels that way too who knows but I'd guess Yes.

Casas is a nice prospect, but if Mayer isn’t immediately their number 1, then it’s either being overthought or there’s too much hype for the guy who should have been the first pick in the draft.

Just a way for small markets to not invest where they should and to keep high end talent out of the game.

What they do today will be very telling if Mayer is willing to sign at slot or slightly under. I think its going to be slightly over but nothing crazy.
