At 526, the Red Sox select Phillips Sikes, OF, TCU. Much better, Chaim! Thanks for throwing me a bone

At 556, the Red Sox select Tyler Uberstine, RHP, Northwestern. I go to college with him and have seen him pitch a few times. Low 90s fastball, gets a lot of swing and miss on it. Decent change that he throws a lot. Ok curve. Transferred from USC after his freshman year, threw mid 90s but was wild and kind of settled down this year. Was Northwestern’s saturday starter this season. Keith Law wrote a report on him at the beginning of the season and said he’s be a good underslot get in the back of the top 10 rounds, so cool to see the Sox grab him this late. Good dude, excited to see what he can do.

Lots of video of this outing. A few times he comes off the mound it appears there is something wrong with his right leg. Maybe hurt or a brace but looks like he is hobbling when walking. Didn't seem to impact pitching but looks like something is wrong. Foot fell asleep between innings. Could happen to anybody.

At 586, and with their final pick of the 2021 draft, the Red Sox select Josh Hood, SS, UPenn.

Interesting that the Red Sox drafted two guys that could play SS for NC State next year...

The Sox had an aversion to left handed pitching it would seem.

Angels did indeed draft 20 pitchers. Crazy.

Jackson Linn MA HSer with two way ability, big time exit velos to go with 95+ off the mound. Late pop up guy, likely to go to Tulane, but who knows with Houston, they are always creative.

How many UDFA's will the Sox try to go after?

Nov. 15, 2031 Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom announced today that he will be stepping down and that 31-year-old Josh Hood, a former Red Sox farmhand, will be taking his place. "After winning 11 straight World Series, I feel like I should let someone else enjoy the same great feelings that I have in building and re-building these teams. As my right-hand man for the past few years, Josh has really proven that he's ready to take the reins."

Angels did indeed draft 20 pitchers. Crazy. 19/20 college arms. So are they just going to cut every minor league pitcher already in their system? You gotta wonder how their minor league hitting is going to look like in the next couple years, particularly in Low-A.

I can't think of any strategic reason to want to draft all pitchers. Well, for LAA it sort of makes sense, given the Trout/Ohtani/Rendon window and languishing in fourth place due to lack of pitching (pro tip: instead of signing Rendon, how about signing a front-line pitcher?). Not sure what the LAD motivation is but I bet the FG guys will love the hell out of it. I mean, I'm sure that's exactly it. Not only that big 3 you mentioned, but they can back them up with Walsh, Stassi and Gosselin. Fletcher isn't a great leadoff hitter, but he's not terrible. Even Iglesias is okay for a bottom order guy. When healthy (which has obviously been an issue), that has to be the be best lineup going. But they got nothing going, Pitching-wise. Apart form Ohtani it's just garbage. That would seem to be obviously why they are desperate to find any Ps that could be close. It's not a great strategy to be limiting yourself like that by need in a draft, but I'd be pretty sure that's the reasoning.

Gotta like what Boston did with this year's draft. We'll see who signs and where they'll play... and what that'll mean for those in the existing farm system. Interesting that some teams went heavy - real heavy - on pitching. Boston didn't do that, at least in the higher rounds. Are some teams looking at trends and trying to get ahead of the curve (pun intended)?

I'm just glad I'm not a minor league pitcher in the Angels (or Dodgers) system. They're going to have to clean house to make room for 20 (or 18) new arms. I bet the Sox FO is watching closely to see who gets called into the AA manager's office...

Extremely small nit but is it possible to add the green and blue highlights to the players listed in the 2020 draft history? I find that feature very helpful!

Isn't it that they drafted four players and signed them all? What information are you looking for? It was more directed towards the UDFA's and whether they are still in the system. The highlights make it a lot easier than scanning through the roster page. Super minor detail but was just curious.

So it would be helpful to indicate that I think. Though a small nit indeed.)

Now that the draft is over I got to say Thank you from the bottom of my heart to Zack Godley, Jeffrey Springs, Matt Hall, Ryan Weber, Kyle Hart and Marcus Walden for getting us Marcelo Mayer and Jud Fabian. You're the true heroes gentlemen.

Under the assumption Green and Hood don't sign, I am pretty thrilled with this draft. I think they did a great job mixing ceiling (Fabian, Rodriguez, Guerrero) with floor (McDonough, Hickey, Kavadas), and of course the Mayer pick was a slam dunk. Should be some pretty immediate contributors that will make the system even more fun to follow.
