Great move by the rays locking up Franco. Love it for them and love it for baseball He'll have some amazing trade value from day 1. They'll probably deal him the second they decide they need to do a rebuild, whenever that happens over the course of the next decade. Their lease at the Trop ends in 2027. Wherever Stu Sternberg gets taxpayers to build him a park, one of his selling points will be that Wander Franco is on the team.

It's easy for me to sit here and think this but 12 year deal? Don't get why you'd take that as a 20 year old. Why not do 8? You're still going to get a big bag of money for 8 and be a free agent at 28. None the less happy for the kid, he's a superstar in the making and now can focus on being baseball instead of money. You figure an eight-year offer would've been something like $100M, right? So getting an extra 3/$82M, while also getting his annual salary 25% higher off the bat (a huge benefit, whether for investment purposes or if he just wants to start buying rich-person stuff)? If he's a HOF-level talent he gets about $30M extra in years 1-8 to give up the potential for what, an extra $40-50M extra on the table in years 9 through 11. I'd advise a client to strongly consider doing that. And if he's that type of player, he's still going to get a big payday at 31.

White Sox are close to signing Kendall Graveman, per Heyman. 3 year/$24m range.

If he can replicate his 2021 season going forward him Hendricks and crochet makes for a great pen. Of course they could try crochet in the rotation and hope he's Chris Sale 2.0.

I'd guess that means they're going to trade Kimbrel this offseason? Either that or I would think he takes on Kopech's role and Kopech moves to the starting rotation? Either way, they're about to get better. I hope the Red Sox start working on tangibly improving the bullpen.

Yep you can make a pretty good argument the Red sox were a better bullpen away from making the world series this year. If all they do is sign guys like Familia and other throw em at the wall and see who sticks types I'm gonna be pretty pissed. We still don't know what they plan to do with Houck and Whitlock though I suppose. Maybe they prefer to sign starters and keep them in the pen. If they move Whitlock to the rotation though that pen needs even more help.

I certainly don't think Graveman, for instance, is a dead cinch to be a bullpen ace. He has had one season as a reliever, basically, in which he had an xERA of 3.71 in 56 IP. That's not much of a track reord to wager $24 million on.

Top of the line closers have been getting 16 million or so AAV on the free agent market. Graveman got half that. I think that's a pretty good wager on the white Sox part, even if he regresses and ends up a solid 7th inning guy hes probably worth that money. I can't disagree about the volatility of relievers on a year to year basis though.

Red Sox V. Dodgers Spring Training game from 2008 at the LA Coliseum. Saw the game on YouTube and thought I'd share because it's pretty darn cool (Scully announcing too) That was the year the Sox had traveled to Japan for an exhibition tour. I remember watching that game as well and was blown away by Scully. Listen to how well Scully researched the Red Sox players, there was even a story about some rookie's grandmother. There's absolutely no question he's the all time greatest announcer. That same game was broadcast by NESN. More than once, Remy, RIP, said something like, here comes someone wearing #99.

Bummer. Matz was someone I would’ve been happy to get. So we remain a starter down. Who’s up next?

Anyone else getting sick of Steve Cohen? He tweeted something out about how he's never dealt with such an unprofessional agent after Steven Matz signed with cardinals. He seems like a big baby.

Kinda feel bad for Mets fans. "The Devil you don't" and all that. Can't think of one positive thing Steve Cohen has done yet. Even his big ticket purchase looks like a depreciating asset so far.

This tweet crushed my soul. I am beyond sad 😢 What? Do you really see the Sox spending 400 million or whatever the hell it is to sign Soto? Let him stay with the Nats. Beats seeing him with the Yankees or Dodgers or somebody else in the AL East. Bloom so far likes to spread the money around. He was never going to allocate that much money for that long for one player. The Angels have had the best player in baseball for a long time but didn't build a team around him, which can be hard to do when one player makes that much money. From what I can see Bloom subscribes to the theory of spreading it around to build the deepest team possible. Keep that in mind when Devers is a free agent and the Sox don't seem to want to tie into a long-term contract for more than 300 million.

What? Do you really see the Sox spending 400 million or whatever the hell it is to sign Soto? Why not? He’ll be a 25 year-old Free Agent who happens to be the best hitter of his generation. That’s exactly the type of talent you break the bank for. With the Lemahieu extension, the Cole/Stanton contracts and the coming Judge extension, I can’t see the MFY being able to sign him to the mega contract he deserves. It’s interesting that you mention the Dodgers as a potential suitor for Soto considering that Bloom was hired to replicate their model (Andrew Friedman is, after all, Chaim’s former boss) but at the same time you wrote this: Friedman signed Mookie to a mega deal when the opportunity of signing a generational talent presented itself. Keep in mind that Soto will be younger AND is a better hitter than Betts. Again, I respectfully disagree with that statement, the Angels failure wasn’t due to the Trout money but the money given to the aging talent AROUND him (Pujols, Upton, Hamilton...) and their failure to build a competent pitching staff (weak farm system incapable of churning any type of pitching talent or hitting talent to trade for pitching commodities) With all due respect to Raffy, who I love immensely, he’s not in the same stratosphere as Juanito hitting wise.
