The Sox should be the highest bidder if they are absolutely sure about this guy. I'll trust their evaluation. Rusney Castillo was a total screw up, but different GM there. What if the Yankees are absolutely sure about Suzuki? They could easily be the highest suitor as well. I'm not saying the Sox cannot outbid the Yankees "if they're sure" about him. I'm not saying the Sox can't or won't sign Suzuki and that you can just put him in pinstripes. I'm just pushing back against the idea that only the Red Sox can be sure about him and that if they are they of course, will be the highest bidder. You could say the same thing about the Yankees. You could even say the same thing about the Blue Jays. Just as easily as you can say that about the Sox. I personally think the Jays could use him less than Sox or Yankees, but the Yankees could just as easily use Suzuki. Suzuki, Gallo, and Judge can form the outfield in some alignment with Stanton DHing, so while they could use a true CF, they could as easily use Suzuki, especially given how bad their offense was last year. They could certainly use the upgrade that Suzuki provides. Hell, even the Jays would find him an upgrade to Grichuck, who they were trying to get rid of. Yankees could also use a SS, but are talking to Simmons. They spend the lowest percentage of revenues on their payroll in MLB. They have holes in CF, SS and in the bullpen. They are kind of dumb to be in on Suzuki when they have Gallo and Judge already because he's not a CF.

I didn't, but I'm already counting on him to be a sunk cost. I'm sure they'll keep playing him for awhile before giving up. They also have a hole at 1B.

What are the odds of him being healthy? They'd probably shoehorn Gallo into CF or play Suzuki there who could probably handle CF but would be a lot better in RF. Would it be a clean fit? No. Then again, with Voit, I didn't think the Yankees would be in on Rizzo last July, so who knows. All I know is their offense needs an upgrade. If they're not going to upgrade SS offensively, then you figure 1b or an outfield spot would be where they upgrade. The Red Sox would easily have the cleaner fit for Suzuki. Let's see if they're willing to pay enough to get him.

Either See-ya or Conforto work for me. One (Suzuki) is likely to be cheaper and comes with more risk but potentially more reward on a cost-benefit basis. The other (Conforto) likely costs more but has an impressive MLB-tested track record.
I think the Sox have adequate offense and would be willing to take the risk on Suzuki if that meant more flexibility to reconstruct the stockyard. We need better bulls in that pen.

I don't see Conforto as an option. He's not good in RF and you need a good one for Fenway. The Red Sox could use improvement in their OF defense and Conforto doesn't help. He's also LH, which defeats the purpose of having JBJ on the roster.

I prefer Suzuki myself, maybe just because I am intrigued. But I do really do think he could be a really good player. It might depend on his ability to hit the high hard stuff which will be more than what he is used to maybe. I think Chaim is going to build the pen with a few failed starters and do the throw it against the wall and see what sticks method. Who knows BP guys are usually risky, like a box of chocolates you never know what your going to get.

He's also LH, which defeats the purpose of having JBJ on the roster. I agree the fit is harder to see with conforto but I'm not totally discounting him as an option. He's been an above average hitter most of his career with some years well above average. Is 28 so theoretically should be still in his prime. As you point out the defense is the bigger issue than the handedness in my mind as he's probably better off in LF. In terms of free agent outfield options my rankings would go Suzuki, Schwarber who is probably about as good a hitter than conforto and should be cheaper, conforto and pham. Pham would be a mostly last case scenario situation though.

Alright I dont get this. Can somebody please explain this to me.
If JBJ is just a 4th OF and is on the bench against righties, then that means you have Arroyo at 2b, Hernandez in CF, and hopefully Suzuki or somebody else in RF.
That leaves Devers and Verdugo as the Sox only 2 lefties in the lineup.
How is that being too lefthanded?
Most lineups probably carry about 4 LH hitters against righthanders.
So I dont understand the point why the 3rd OF must be RH. Why Schwarber or Comforto in LF with Verdugo in RF isnt a viable option.
I think it is although I wouldn't want to give up a draft pick for Conforto and I understand defensively if not offensively too, they'd be better off with Suzuki in RF and Verdugo in LF.
I wish they could get both Schwarber and Suzuki, play Schwarber at 1b and trade Dalbec for pitching.

I think it maybe comes down to if something happened to Hernandez and he missed a chunk of time you're looking at an all LH OF since the guy who would probably come up is Duran. I do think it is being overblown though that they won't sign another lefty OF. If they miss on Suzuki their next best options for an OF to push jbj to 4th OF are all lefty unless you want to say pham is a better option than schwarber or conforto which I don't personally believe.

Pham would be a mostly last case scenario situation though. I prefer Suzuki and agree that Conforto on LF with Verdugo in RF makes the most sense. The current platoon looks like it could be Arroyo/JBJ (with Kiké playing CF/2B) in which case Conforto would make the OF very LH-heavy, but he wouldn't affect the platoon. They would need a RHH bench bat, but I'm assuming that Conforto & Verdugo with start vs righties and lefties, right? So Plawecki or utility infielder to-be-named-later can be that RHH in a pinch. Why do you expect Schwarber to be cheaper than Conforto? Most sites I've seen have Schwarber ranked just ahead of Conforto - given the down year Conforto just had. And don't forget, Schwarber is a whole 4 days younger!

And you'd want to rest your starting LH outfielders at some point and not replace them with JBJ, because it's better to rest LH OF vs LHP.

Ha yea you got me there I did forget about them. Bryant I would be happy with for sure but I've been reading Castellanos wants an 8 year deal. I know want vs what he will get are two different things but he's pretty close to a DH only type of player these days and if he gets anywhere near 8 years count me out.

If they have Suzuki as a better player on their board, then you kind of sign the best player available and sort through other options later. The Yankees could trade for Didi at SS again. Something like that to get it more left handed.

They SHOULD value Suzuki less because he fits their team worse. That doesn't mean they won't be stupid, but it's stupid.
