Huh. There are lots of ways I could imagine reacting to a bald eagle landing on me, but "casual disregard" is really not one of them. No idea what that says about the man. The eagle sensed that Paxton was a Canadian. Oh, he's Canadian! That explains it; probably happens to him all the time.

This signing is genus! 1 year prove it deal and if he does then a 2 year club option. So this is a possible 3 year 33 million dollar deal for a pitcher who not very long ago was better then E-Rod. I dig this deal!!!! Bloom must be watching a ton of shark tank 😂

Huh. There are lots of ways I could imagine reacting to a bald eagle landing on me, but "casual disregard" is really not one of them. No idea what that says about the man. That looked staged, I'm sure they got his permission. There's an eagle sanctuary not far from where I live (Philippines Eagles) and they routinely have eagles perch on the attendees shoulders, it's not like as if that's a wild animal that's never been in captivity. As an aside, when I lived in California, my wife and I volunteered at an exotic animal rescue center. I've been in cages with full grown Bengal tigers, had timber wolves with their paws on my chest looking down (they're close to 7' tall standing up) amongst a whole bunch of things. The ones that are scary are the ostriches which think your eyes are shiny objects to peck at. Aside to the aside, Michael Jackson's arctic wolves were also there. They were rescued as abused animals. He was a sicko no matter what they tell you.

The eagle sensed that Paxton was a Canadian. Brilliant, that. But I am wondering about Paxton contributing in 2022. Both Sale and Whitlock cases suggest late help if at all. Hope to be proven wrong.

I don't hate this move in isolation, but in context it seems pretty bad. Especially with the other deals given out to starters on other teams as well as the sox. Wacha 1yr/7mil (Low risk, buy low candidate you hope catches lighting in a bottle in the front half of season) + Paxton 3yr/35mil (Mid Risk, buy low candidate you hope heals enough to pitch well in the second half of season) =3yr/42mil (14 mil AAV for what amounts to one complete starter for 3 seasons in the best case scenario or 1yr/17mil in worst case) vs Gray 4yr/56mil (14mil AAV) Rodriguez 5/77mil (15.4mil AAV) Matz 4yr/44mil (11mil AAV) This seems like a poor use of resources for Bloom when compared to what other teams are receiving. In fairness, I've thought this before with him and been wrong. I wanted Paxton and Odorizzi last year because they seemed like a safer bet to be stable than Richards and Perez in the rotation for a similar amount of money. So what do I know? If the is another move coming (Rodon?) I think its alright, but still seems like a lot of resources to commit to pretty big gambles when safer options signed for not much more.

Can't get mad about this. But the chances of him getting through a full season at any point in these 3 years is very slim. Especially taking into consideration that he won't be ready until July this year and the habitual injury history. But I'd like to point out that for 17 million (Paxton/Wacha) the Sox could get a pretty good starter with more stability if they wanted to go into a longer term deal. Someone like Erod...

Could be a decent move I've always liked Paxton. However before this signing the redsox payroll twitter account had them at 193.75 million. This would put them at 203.75, either the luxury tax better go up a chunk of change in the cba or they better be willing to go over or else they aren't adding much else via free agency.

Feels like one more starter or starterish pitcher would be appropriate, but more along the lines of a McHugh or Hill who's available at a good value, perhaps when the music stops.

Bloom already done with his trade deadline acquisition.
Very good chance he serves in a Whitlock/Houck multi-inning reliever role when he's ready to go.

I really like this deal, though I would consider it more of a “trade deadline addition” than a signing. Paxton won’t be ready until mid season at the earliest, so I still want the Sox to go out and get another guy that can start. There’s still a bunch of guys out there that I think could be had for short money. Preferably a guy that can start and then move into the bullpen once Paxton and/or Whitlock and Houck move into the rotation. McHugh was just mentioned and another guy could be Smyly. I’d even take another sure thing starter if Bloom can get a guy for cheap. Kikuchi, Pineda, Anderson, and Hill are still out there. I’d even take a shot on Bundy, Davies, or Boyd in the right deal. Right now one of Houck/Whitlock is currently in the rotation at the start of the year and I’m just not comfortable with that if this team has true intentions of contending.

This deal is genius. Even a diminished Paxton should be able to help out of the pen down the stretch, and those options will be really valuable if he recovers fully from TJ. Agree with Chris that I see us picking up a Hill or McHugh type and then leaving the rotation alone. I'd be comfortable with that going into 2022.

I'd be more uncomfortable if both Houck and Whitlock didn't get a shot at a starting gig. I'm noe comfy with the staff if they add one more starter/reliever, I prefer Hill there.
I'm also hoping Bloom can dig up another Kiké Hernandez then I'd be happy going into trade time.

Yup, add Hill who will probably break down in August, then have Paxton ready to add something in the 2nd half. Hopefully he can pitch meaningful innings next year but that would be a bonus based on most TJ comebacks. I would expect him to be very good in 23-24 but once again a guy who should probably be pulled in the 5th or so as he has never been a workhorse.

So does this mean all those Sox savings on restomod pitchers is going to Correa?

"He had TJS mid-April, I doubt he can help much in 2022"FO is probably thinking in terms of post AS break for timing. This looks to be similar to the Sale TJS timeline. So sometime in August? This is also a very Tampa-North kind of move. If Paxton recovers and feels good the last two months (he'll be making decent money rehabbing) then it'll be a good move to pick up the option. But he has to prove he's back and healthy. It takes time to get used to the different feel in the elbow.

Paxton is like Chris Sale in 2021. Coming off TJ, hope to get a boost from him at the end of the season, when healthy not sure he'll give you a full season.
I wouldn't call it "low risk/high reward" though. Certainly high reward but the risk that he never actually gets back to normal is quite high, considering his history.
Obviously it's not my money, so that's the low risk part, but you absolutely need another innings-eating starter to pitch the whole season. My preference there would be for Anderson, Hill or Pineda, with Anderson well in front.

I like this signing for 2 reasons: 1) as depth for the final 2 months of the season 2) the 2 options years @ $$ signed for

Doing the math, Sale had TJ in March 2020 and made his first start of 2021 on 8/14.
Paxton had TJ -- his second TJ -- in April 2021, so there's really no guarantee he makes it back in 2022.
Granted, Sale had a couple weird setbacks with his neck and an infection, so maybe he could've been back a month or so earlier under ideal conditions. But even with that extra time for his arm, he was nowhere near his previous self in his nine starts back, despite claiming that he felt better than ever.
I definitely like the upside of signing Paxton but it seems really optimistic to think that he'll make much of a contribution in 2022 (maybe 30%?). Obviously Chaim has personally given Paxton a full physical and pored over his medicals, so maybe his rehab is going unusually well and that factored into the signing. But I see this as much more of a 2023-24 play, with $10m being the price to have exclusive rights to conducting and evaluating his rehab process.
Definitely need one more healthy arm.

The two-year club option is interesting because it forces the team to make a real commitment rather early into Paxton's recovery. I suppose by November they should have a pretty good idea of how he came through it but I bet his agent insisted on the two-year option, rather than one or two one-year options.

Isn't this really a three year deal with a team opt out?
