Look, if you're spending one year $7 million on a pitcher, you're supposed to get bad. It's really expensive to buy good. Wacha + Hill + Paxton = $22 million, right? I wonder how their combined performance will compare to Eduardo Rodriguez' @ $14 million. Different risks involved with each situation- it really will be interesting to watch it play out.. Our risk is short term, Detroit’s is more long term imo Wacha Flocka getting the stink out of his system before the regular season hopefully

You’re not going to miss much. I’m curious to see how he’d do in relief, but I’m not looking forward to his starts.

In Wacha's defense, since he came back out for the 4th he went 2IP 0H 0ER 1BB 4K. Hopefully just making the right adjustments.

Miguel Bleis is one of a few lower level players that is with the big league club for today's game. From the sound of it on the radio broadcast the second shift is all low minors because they're the only ones still in camp. Brian Abraham Eddie Romero Jr. on the radio broadcast talking about players, the DSL routines, etc. Edit: I am bad with voices.

O'Brien has never really had the chance to build up the same kind of rapport with a color analyst, it's been kind of musical chairs every since he came on. That's largely because they were (rightly) accommodating Remy's sickness. But that's not the situation anymore, and instead of running through like twelve ex-players for like 14 games a year, they should find one young-ish guy and stick with him, they way they did with Remy 35 years ago. And, of course, have Eck on as the third man whenever he wants. Orsillo was great. There are many, many ways to get more analytical views of the game while it's going on. Orsillo engaged regular fans in a way that very few people could. I understand he wasn't everyone's cup of tea, but there's a reason folks got so attached to him. It was very, very foolish to let him go. I'm a big fan of Lenny DiNardo, but he's probably not colorful enough to follow Remy or avoid being overshadowed by Eck. These are huge shoes to fill or match.
(I also have some bias for a guy who had the Pixies' "Where is My Mind" as his entrance music, and that I hung out with a bit at a Pixies / Mission of Burma Show in Lowell ...)

I agree with both Eric and James. Orsillo's easy manner connected well with the everyday fan. Both he and Sean McDonough created such great rapport with Remy. O'Brien and Orsillo are both great announcers. Although I never quite understood that there was a rational basis for letting Orsillo go, I have come to enjoy and respect O'Brien's broadcast skills and preparation.

If my math was right… Juan Chacon and Johnfrank Salazar will be up when the Red Sox bat.

Mo Vaughn sitting in the radio booth for a couple innings and scratching right where I itch. Hates the robo-ump. "Adjusting to each ump's strike zone is part of being a big-leaguer..."
Big Raffy fan. "Let's just sit here and watch this next cut." (Raffy walked.)
Great booth guest. Lots of great points and even great cultural references ("As a hitter, you've got to have a brain like a WOPR computer...")
Nice to be reminded of how great Mo was... and still is.

"Lukewarm" is being generous. I think Mookie loves being in a city where the seats aren't filled until the third inning and the media treat the players like Hollywood stars. He was never staying in Boston, even if they outbid everyone by 10%.
I can't think of two other players in the game who I could root for more as people than Xander and Raffy.
Stop with the off-topic, old-news Mookie stuff or I'll be forced to point out that when you adjust hitting for clutch, by using Win Probability Added instead of offensive Wins Above Average, and substitute the more accurate Statcast Runs Saved on Plays Made on defense for what b-Ref uses, Alex Verdugo has 5.6 WAR since the trade and Mookie has 4.8. I don't want to post that because it's not predictive and people might get the wrong idea. Didn't say a word about Verdugo -- just that I never thought Betts was going to stay in Boston and I hope X and Raffy do (the latter part being a big 2022 ST topic) -- but those are some great stats. Hope Doogie keeps it up, and comes around vs. LHP. I really like Doogie -- he actually looks a lot like I did 30 years ago (minus the ink sleeve).

More great stuff on the radio broadcast from AGM Eddie Romero.
"Who's the new 2B?" "That's Abraham Liendo. He's from central Venezuela..."
Later on, "who's a guy you're really excited about?" "Well, I'll start with the CF Juan Chacon. He's from western Venezuela, where they play much more soccer than baseball. His family moved to central Venezuela when he was young and he was able to get much better coaching..."
I had not thought much about which parts of Venezuela to scout. It's incredible how they sign at 16 years old and they were all scouted for "several years" before being signed.
Eddie also described how Brayan Bello was a late-bloomer who was eligible to be signed for over a year before the Sox signed him for $28k after three workouts. Good stuff.

The post-steroid aging curve is brutal and trading for solid cost-controlled players like Verdugo when your star is about to get paid market rates is a straightforward arbitrage even though it’s painful to lose your stars. Predicting aging profiles without steroids has to be one of the most important analytical exercises these days. Pablo and Crawford weren’t just bad contracts, their valuations almost had implicitly outdated aging curves built in. Mookie’s defense in RF has really declined and that might be a greater factor in his WAR decline than the shrinking power

And my apologies to those who can't bear to hear any more about Markus Betts...
...but your point about defense is spot on. There's no doubt that Markus is a great player -- 44 fWAR/50 bWAR already! -- but when your game relies largely on speed, defense, and bat speed, it can decline in a hurry.
While he was with the Sox, we also saw hints of the injury issues that affected him last season and are more likely to intensify than not as he embarks on his age 29 season. My go-to comp for Markus is Andrew McCutchen (50.8 fWAR/46 bWAR -- most of that by the time he was Markus's current age). Cutch's decline began at 29 and he was basically done at 32. I don't know if Markus will decline that quickly but I do know that when he turns 32 he'll still have 7 years and $265m left on his contract.
