I would be surprised if X can be signed for a similarly friendly deal, especially given his agent (Boras) and the weak FA market expected next year. For that reason, I think it's likely X will go to a higher bidder and Story will be the long term SS. Given that we have an alternative at SS now, there's no reason for Bloom to overpay to bring him back. Any deal that keeps him here would have to be fair. That said, I would still love to have X back. We'll see how good his 2022 is and what kind of contract he's looking for! I'm also curious if he'd be more likely to want to stay if we lock up Devers, and vice versa. That all could definitely be true, but I really doubt Boras has anything to do with it. If he did, I doubt Xander would have signed his previously contract to begin with. While I don’t think it’s realistic that he stays at this point, I would not at all be surprised if he works out an extension that pays him a bit more than he is getting now, especially considering his comments when he signed his previous extension. However, it’s hard to say if the team would want to do that or not at this point. Xander's contract was team friendly, but it's worth remembering that he wasn't offensive juggernaut he is now when he signed that deal. His performance since then is the biggest factor in why the deal is such a bargain. Everything I've heard from him suggests he does want to stay, though. Hopefully we can bridge the gap.

Conspiracy, the Sox didnt seriously negotiate with Fabian and his price tag because they wanted the pick the following year knowing they’d be making at least one big free agent splash and would be losing at least one comp pick

I really think you could keep all three if people are open to positions switches. Story is SS next year even if Xander is back.
It's a good deal in that it's also buying next year's FA this year. And he will be cheaper than either Xander or Devers. He is top 12 MVP 3 years in a row. I like Story at 6x140 better than anyone at 10/300
Also I was told on this board that it was guaranteed Bloom would never ever spend money and we were the Rays for ever. What happened?

The Fabian compensation pick is compensation for... Fabian. Not for whatever picks they lose from signing FAs this season.

This signing gives us lots of options and gives us leverage in contract and trade negotiations. We are not hosed now if Bogaerts leaves. If Bogaerts wants to stay maybe they eventually move him to third and Devers is the one who leaves if he doesn’t sign an extension. Story could very well stay at second long term. The opt out is basically worthless since in the instance he exercises it, we’d probably want him back three more years anyway. There is also a no trade clause. Great point. This is the way all opt-outs should work.

I definitely get the feeling he genuinely wants to be here long term. There’s a lot of factors that play into that though. We will have to wait and see!

Well, sure, Bloom signed a big ticket free agent literally the first time he had the financial ability to, and went over the CBT to do so. But what does that prove?

I don’t recall anyone saying that. But it is interesting that your argument for Story is the likely savings… then you use it as evidence of big spending. Bottom line is if they do this and let X walk, then this is a money saving move. It is also a step back in that instance. I am certainly content for this coming season… Story at 2b is better than anything they’ve had in god knows how long. But it doesn’t make me less concerned about “the plan.”

Does that factor the height of LF wall? It gives and takes away.

This is Story's age 29 season, so six years gets you through his age 34 season. 35 is the limit even if the 7th year team option gets triggered. They could certainly still keep X; prospects can always bust or be traded, and if X is signed to a good deal he could even get traded if/when a prospect is ready to supplant him. It may be harder to be the high bidder with Story on the team, though. I don’t see them signing Story to this contract then signing Devers and X, all while their best prospects are at SS, 2b, and 1b. This strikes me as “the plan.” Story is cheaper than X will be, and then you turn the infield over to Mayer/Yorke and Casas. Maaayyybee keep Devers. I think Bloom looks at Devers or X and Story as 2 3b possibilities. I think Bloom's hope is that Story plays well enough to opt out after 4 seasons. If he does Bloom probably lets him walk. The worry is that he's not very good by then and you're stuck with him for 6 years until he's 35. If you extend X and let Devers walk, then maybe X winds up the 3b or in LF. More likely X goes and they pay Devers. Maybe by time Mayer and Yorke are up, Devers might be more of a DH and would open a spot for Story at 3b. So many variables. Let's just hope we get 4 productive years out of him and cut the chord. His OBP is kind of ordinary. I'm not too optimistic as to how that ages, especially away from Colorado.

Whats not to like?
Until this past season which he played with an injury he was easily one of top 5 SS in all of baseball and the Sox got him for A LOT less then others got this offseason. And he is playing 2nd base for us no less. Now the Sox have a top 5 2nd basemen.
Great D, 30+ hr bat with a good OBP, what more do you want more walks.

Does that factor the height of LF wall? It gives and takes away. And does it factor in that half of those balls were hit from a mile up in the atmosphere?

voice...the only problem with that [Xander] is on the record and not wanting any part of a position change, said so recently. He is gonna go where he can play SS and I think there are teams that will let him. Are there examples of a 30YO SS with below average defense being offered more than 6/140 to play SS? Maybe not, but that was prior to this last CBA. There is definitely more money for teams and a higher CBT to work with, so we will see what the market will be for him. I don't think it is out of the question. If his bat stays where it is, he can DH value in the NL now also, making more teams in play for his services.. X has been so good, so consistent, a leader in the clubhouse...etc....etc. Do you think that contract isn't possible ?

According to Buster Olney, Bogaerts not only helped recruit Story but he was one of the main recruiters. That’s interesting.

What the hell is wrong with the Rockies for not trading him? They didn't even make him an offer. I bet they could have gotten more than a 2nd round pick.

You can't say "not signing Fabian was no big deal because they get compensation in the next draft" and "the compensation for not signing Fabian cancels out the pick they lose for signing Story" - that would be double counting.
Now what you might say, I suppose, is that picking up Binelas/Hamilton for Renfroe was a way of maintaining prospect depth despite giving up a draft pick for Story.
(Honestly, though, I think it just makes sense to say... they lost a draft pick for signing Story. They don't make up for that loss from some other move; they make up for it by having Story for the next 5 years.)

Sounds like the Rockies offered Story more money, but he wanted to go to a contender.
The Astros, Giants, and Red Sox were the three finalists. Based on my read of it he was willing to go to whichever of those three won the bidding.
If the above is all true, Bloom played his hand here perfectly and deserves a lot of kudos. Its one of the most important things he has done so far and it sounds like he nailed it.
I would say take on Myers’ contract for prospects, throw him in left and position ourselves for the deadline, and that’d be a pretty good offseason.
