Good game, Hat tip to Winc and Duran. See what a weapon Duran can be .
See a total rebuild is never the answer. Never ever will work here. Just look at these Tigers and the O’s.
My man Houck.

Sox jump over TB into 3rd place and now 1.5 games behind Toranna. They’ve gone 26-11 in their last 37 which is second in MLB only to the Yanks in that stretch (and we would've beat them out as well if we had not blown so many saves). And they will get back Sale, Paxton and Whitlock, as well as some batting help (Casas?) soon. Not to mention the trade deadline help. Not bad after that shitty start. Never give up! Never surrender!

Jose Berrios 3 HR allowed and 1 strikeout tonight. 5.11 ERA. I bet he is not real popular with Blue Jays fans after all they gave up for him.

Duran needs to play. He’s legitimately their best OF right now. I’m not sure how we got to this point, but it’s true. Not quite ready to go there yet. I assume you mean hitter/outfielder. He is definitely not their best outfielder. Correct. His defense is not there yet. His offense is the best of the group, though. I’d rather see him play over Verdugo, for sure.

He's playing great right now, but whiffs are still way up, still struggles against velocity up in the zone, and his at bats against lefties are pretty poor(example his last AB tonight). I really want him to put it all together but he hasn't answered many of the questions he had coming into the year. Really pulling for him though, could be a dynamic player if he puts it together

I’d rather see him play over Verdugo, for sure. It won't come down to Duran or Verdugo. Verdugo is a good player and he's going to play. I say use KKH, once he's back, as the utility guy. He'd play in the OF against all LH SP and fill in at SS and 2B against RH SP whenever one of our All-Stars at those positions needs a day off. He should also be a late-inning defensive replacement in the OF. Franchy can continue to get most of his ABs at 1B.

Sounds like Margot might be done for the year. He was leading the Rays position players in WAR.

Iâd rather see him play over Verdugo, for sure. Obviously this next month's slate of games - through 7/28 will tell a lot. Really looking forward to to see how this team - and guys like Duran perform against stiffer competition. Starters won't be going 7 innings as often as they have against the weaker clubs they've played this last month, so the BP will be taxed more. I actually feel the team will do fine and will come out the other side OK. No worse than their current position. TB and TOR have their own issues. And I don't think the MFY can finish 120-42. I think Duran will be given an opportunity now to take the CF job - but he will have to have more games like tonight's at the plate. He needs to put the ball in play. He's not going to match Kiké's outfield defense and throwing arm prowess. But Kiké is just not getting it done right now leading off (same as 1st half of last season). Perhaps Duran could spell Verdugo in LF as well. Couldn't tell if Duran would have been safe on his SB attempt in the 1st inning tonight had the throw been handled. It's weird, it's like he has the same problem getting jumps in the outfield and stealing bases. And I don't think Cora wants Duran risking getting thrown out in from of the big 3 - so he better make it when he tries. I think Cora lacked confidence in his ability to steal bases last season.

I get that Duran’s defense may not be there but come on, Kiké has a .600 OPS and average speed. Moreover, he is not even going to be on the team next year. Makes absolutely no sense to play him at the expense of Duran.

Makes absolutely no sense to play him at the expense of Duran. It’s not only that the defense is not there, the gap between Duran and Hernandez defensively in CF is the size of the Grand Canyon. Plus Hernandez had been hitting better prior to going down. He was more or less back to his normal self I would keep Duran up and get him plenty of AB’s rotating in for the OF and MI (Kikè moves to the infield for those games). Start like 4 games a week or something like that

Kiké 2022: 4/8-4/11: 0 for 17, 2 BB 4/12-4/29: .254/.310/.429 4/30-5/11: 2 for 32, 2 BB 5/13-6/7: .262/.319/.427 (MLB CFs: .238/.305/.385)
So he's been absolutely brutal for 20% of the games he's played and an above-average offensive CF for 80%. If you think going forward that he's going to perform to the level of that 80% and those two horrendous skids are outliers, then it's not even close that Hernandez should be playing over Duran. In fact, he doesn't even need to necessarily do that.
NOW, am I saying that I think getting creative and finding a way to keep Duran up while he's producing would be a bad thing? No. But I don't buy "he's so much better than Kiké" necessarily.
Put it this way - how many center fielders have you heard of who've been replaced late for defensive purposes, with the guy playing first base moving to the outfield?

I still don’t think that is a good enough performance to prioritize him over a guy you have under control a long time. To me this isn’t a team that is good enough to prioritize short-term decision-making like that over the long-term. Particularly when its not even clear its the right short-term move either. If the Red Sox don’t plan to bring Duran into the fold longer-term, it would be better to ride his hot streak and then sell off on him at the deadline than whatever it is they are doing with him right now.

Makes absolutely no sense to play him at the expense of Duran. Couldn't agree more. The solution is actually really simple. Play duran in CF and have bradley/hernandez platoon in RF with Kiké acting as more of a super utility guy. His biggest strength at this point is his defensive versatility. With the lack of good bench options this team has, having Kiké take that role would be more impactful than him starting in the OF while providing mediocre hitting and above average defense. There's a reason he's been a util guy the majority of his career prior to coming to the sox.

Duran’s UZR seems to be implying that he doesn’t have the use of his legs or arms.

Yeah, it's -48.2 this year and -33.6 for his short career. Wow.

His arms for lifting, his legs for sprinting. Defense doesn't fit into either category

Duran continuing to play CF makes no sense to me. Move him to LF and see if he can handle that. If he can't, then you move him to 1B and see if he can handle that. If he can't, well at least now you know that he's a DH.

Winckowski is not fooling anyone right now. I'll take his not fooling anyone for 5 innings with just 3 hits and 1 run. Solid work, Winck. Detroit.

If he can't, well at least now you know that he's a DH. He was a second baseman for his entire career but the Sox decided he was an outfielder because of his wheels. Perhaps a move back to his natural position next year if - dammit - they let Xander walk and move Story back to SS. I understand the team wanting to maximize his speed in the OF, if the guy doesn't get the OF or have the arm for it then why not let him do what he does better and then just let his offense play?

No one is out here thinking he's an ace but he is, at least, a useful option. Pretty weird behavior for a Red Sox "fan" to crap all over what is pretty neutral respect for a performance.
