They're meant to be a lot less formal than other threads on the forum, so to moderate them the same way would be silly. However, we do ask posters to maintain a certain level of decorum in these threads, and we plan on moderating the Gameday threads a little more actively this season. In particular, we ask that posters refrain from being overly repetitive with their posts (if you've made your point, let it go), refrain from monopolizing the discussion (if you are making more than a couple posts in a row, you probably need to slow down a little bit), and of course, follow the Ground Rules ( link). The point is to make these threads worth participating in and fun for all posters, from our long-time fixtures to people just signing up today. -The Management

Downs has been sent to AAA yesterday presumably so Arroyo can be added for the Gaurdians series.

I’ve had a really hard time adjusting to the Tribe being called the Guardians now.

I guess they are guarding the land from being taken by the government. I think you meant the "palefaces", government was only part of the problem.

Apparently the British promised native tribes that if they helped the Brits win the War of 1812, they would've been offered what is now Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois and Wisconsin in a treaty while Britain kept what had already been settled by the Americans along the Atlantic seaboard.
Would've been a pretty different world...

I still think the Cleveland team should be named after whatever bugs covered Joba Chamberlain that night.

Guardians is just a lame name. I'd take about 60% of all nouns ahead of Guardians.

The Guardians has to be the most stupid name for any team ever. They may as well have called themselves the PCs (for political correct).
A better choice would have been to use something like MILB used:
Sea Dogs Yard Goats Flying Squirrels
I read an interview several years ago and a Native American Indian said that he was glad for the use of Braves, Red Skins, and Indians, because if not for their use his people would be forgotten entirely. As someone who has read hundreds of books on Native American history I see no disrespect toward them by the use of their names or symbols. Cleveland should change the name back to Indians.

Yes, Red Skin could be offensive until you saw how distinguished the Indian on the helmet looked. My kids said the Red Skins helmet was the “coolest helmet ever”. I don’t see any of those names offensive.

It was time to move on from "Indians" and it was waaaaay past time to move on from "Redskins."
It's too bad they couldn't come up with a name that celebrates their home city. I guess that's the problem with playing in Cleveland.
The Cleveland Mistakes by the Lake just wouldn't work, though that would have been Oil Can Boyd's first suggestion.

kingofthetrill, you're looking for Midges I believe. I CONSTANTLY want to call them the Defenders because of the old Connecticut Defenders minor league team. I don't mind "Guardians," but the logos were an enormous swing-and-miss for me. They're named after damn Guardian statues... stylize the statues!

So, a team named the "Brown Skins" would be Ok, as long as the logo bore some resemblance to a distinguished person - perhaps Colin Powell, Jackie Robinson or MLK?

I still miss the Navigators. And the Whalers. That being said I'm also irrationally upset that there's a team in Oklahoma named after thunderstorms and they went with "Oklahoma City Thunder" and not "OK Boomers"

And a percentage found being mascots for sports teams less than flattering, even if they had cool helmets.

Also, not to get too off track, but calling the logo "distinguished" and not "a horrifying caricature" is preeeetty obtuse

Now I have that scene from My Cousin Vinny stuck in my head. "Imagine, you're a little deer, and you find a cute little brook, and you bend down to get a drink and put your cute little deer lips on the water and BAM! your brains are scattered all over the place. Now, let me AXE you, do you give a **** how cool the helmets the descendants of the people who oppressed your people look?

You mean like the British let India, Greece, Egypt and the tribal nations of sub-Saharan Africa keep their lands? OK...

I think if they kept the name and changed the logo, which was what many tribal people cited as offensive, they would've been fine. Trust me, having spent some time on reservations in the Southwest in my 20s, sports teams' names are very low on the pop list for tribal people. Now, if Apple wanted to move their iPhone assembly plants out of China and onto reservations, THAT would move the needle. That and genuine apprenticeship programs for skilled trade, better school and teachers and legit community college and university scholarship programs, adequate health care facilities and staffing and some legit drug and alcohol treatment programs would be top of wish lists. Sorry, we've hit a nerve.

Their uniforms should look similar to a mall cop or a security service. The name Guardians makes me think of a security service.
