They're meant to be a lot less formal than other threads on the forum, so to moderate them the same way would be silly. However, we do ask posters to maintain a certain level of decorum in these threads, and we plan on moderating the Gameday threads a little more actively this season. In particular, we ask that posters refrain from being overly repetitive with their posts (if you've made your point, let it go), refrain from monopolizing the discussion (if you are making more than a couple posts in a row, you probably need to slow down a little bit), and of course, follow the Ground Rules ( link). Some interesting names and old friends. Springs, who we traded with Chris Mazza to get Ronaldo Hernandez, and potentially Jalen Beeks who we traded to get Eovaldi. If only they could have started against each other. And as a fun fact Springs himself was acquired by trading away Sam Travis.

Austin Davis and Kutter Crawford starting this series has me wondering wth happened to our team I thought we were stacked with SP. 6 injuries to 5 of our top 6 starters is some insanely bad luck.

14 games before the break all vs the Rays and NYY then 3 vs the Blue Jays. Brutal stretch hopefully we can come out over .500.

June was the month when talk about the RS being a seller stopped. This month could put them right back in that conversation. With the way the team is playing and the P injuries they have, it feels like a whole lot of losses are coming.
But with Eovaldi and Wacha injured and JDM fading, our potential trade assets are losing their value.

Sheesh, what's with the Eeyoreism? They're in second place in the division, first place in the wild card, and we're talking about selling off at the deadline?
Sale is almost back. Eovaldi and Whitlock shouldn't be too far behind. They fortunately have the pitching depth now to cover for the other injured guys.
"With the way the team is playing... it feels like a whole lot of losses are coming"... They are 9-4 in their lasat 13. 13-6 in their last 19. 21-8 in thir last 29. How good does the team have to be for the question to not be "are we selling off at the deadline"?

Looks like Crawford is the bulk guy behind Davis today, Bello Wednesday.

They're in a precarious position with the pitching injuries and a run of games against AL East teams. As I've said, I'm always skeptical of banking on guys, particularly P's, coming off the IL and saving the season. It assumes that the returning guys will be effective and remain healthy. We'll also have other guys get injured in the second half. I'd love to see the RS holding onto a WC spot at the deadline, so that they can make meaningful deals for a position player and a reliever. But for now, I worry.

But with Eovaldi and Wacha injured and JDM fading, our potential trade assets are losing their value. I agree that they're in for a rough stretch but I dont think they'll fall hopelessly behind if they do fall behind Toronto, TB, and likely Cleveland. With an easier schedule following the rough schedule, guys getting healthy and a chance to improve at the deadline, the Sox should ultimately be ok. Besides it's probably more advantageous being WC3 anyways. Given that the Yankees have a 14.5 game lead halfway through the season and have run away with the division anyways, WC3 is not a bad spot if they can put their best roster together by the end of the season.

We'll also have other guys get injured in the second half. I'd love to see the RS still holding onto a WC spot at the deadline adding a position player and a reliever at the deadline. But for now, I worry. Fair enough. It is a moment of peril! But the good news is that we miss McClanahan in the first Rays series while our pitching is at its thinnest. After this round through the rotation Sale comes back and hopefully Wacha will be able to go, and then Eovaldi by the second NY series. (This is going by fangraphs projected starters, which is questionable; among other things they have "Brandon Wood" listed as Wednesday's probable starter. But the timeline seems about right from what I've read.)
Winning two of three in this series would go a long way toward ensuring a tolerable position for the team at the all star break.

I do love seeing "the Red Sox currently occupy the first of 3 wild card spots, but if they suck, they might sell at the deadline." I mean, no kidding. It's also an opportunity to try and put some distance between themselves and three teams they're fighting with for a playoff berth and positioning.
Me, I'm basking in the fact that the team's fourth starting pitcher potentially going on the IL, and at least missing a start, means the club has to stoop to (checks notes) calling up one of the top 50 prospects in the game.

That's not close to what I said, Chris. True, they have the first WC spot right now. They also have just a one-game lead in the loss column over the fourth team in the WC race. I just see their position as a bit tenuous with the injuries and BP issues. I'm not sure what's crazy about that.
And yes, the games coming up are a chance to gain ground in the standings. That's kind of how it works.
And we're all looking forward to seeing Bello after all we've heard and read about him. I like that he's starting against TB, which ranks 22nd in R/G.

The Yankees are gonna kill us. I don't see any reason for this much pessimism. 4/5 wins is 4-13 or 5-12. Even if the Yankees win all 7, which they won't, we'd still need to be 4-6 or 5-5 against TB and Toronto to end up at such a bad record. TB in particular is very beatable. Even with a depleted pitching staff I'm optimistic.

This is a 17 game stretch against good opponents with a depleted pitching staff, after which there will still be a whopping 66 games to play. Sale, Eovaldi, and Whitlock will be back, Paxton and Taylor should join before long, heck, Bello could even pitch himself into staying. Even with a disastrous stretch at like 4-13, the worst we'd likely be is like 4-5 games out of the WC... With an easier schedule to follow with a much stronger team. It should be easy to come back from. And I am way more bullish on this team in the meantime.

The 4th of July hats go perfect with the uniforms. That’s one pet peeve of mine I understand the market they want to make extra hats but some clash with the uniform. MLB should touch up the uniform to match the hat. Like Father’s Day. Armed forces day. Like I said it’s a pet peeve of mine.
Happy 4th everyone.

The Sox upcoming schedule is exactly what I want to see. What's the downside? Let's see what they have. If they can't compete why not find out now?
