Sad day. JBJ is one of my all time favorites. Ditto! As exciting as it is to watch clutch home runs (THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, Papi!), the plays I will sit and watch and re-watch in slomo a dozen times or more are the great defensive plays. JBJ provided way more than his share. Those occasional streaks when he hit like a HOFer were icing on the cake.

I think I'm finally going to order my JBJ jersey. I went to see the Sox in Anaheim a few months back and the 2 guys next to me both wearing one and I talked to them the whole game about how much I love his defense. I would honestly prefer him in CF batting 9th and Duran getting ABs in AAA then to have to let him go. That's just the love I have for his defense. I mean were still letting Sanchez get AB's and I don't even remember seeing that man get a hit. He's like 1-40. Why not let Arroyo play 2nd and JBJ play CF. I think that better than Duran/Sanchez offensively and defensively.

I still don’t understand the downside of keeping JBJ as a 4th outfielder. I feel like I’m in the denial stage of the grieving process.

Never should have reacquired him in the first place but since Duran CAN'T play CF, we should have kept JBJ until the end of the year.

They don't have anybody that can play center on the active roster right now. I don't understand how Bloom can say the roster is more functional without anybody that can truly play a major league centerfield on the roster. A career utility man who barely played CF and is injured is the one guy who can play a major league CF on this team. It's crazy. Such a simple thing, yet not emphasized. Guess it doesn't matter a lot now anymore but they should have kept JBJ for late inning defense if nothing else...and if Duran isn't hitting - at this point he's JBJ without the defense or calm demeanor. I anticipate he'll wind up in Philly at some point soon.

He’s been a great teammate and soldier. He’s an elite defender. What does his release accomplish?

JBJ to the Blue Jays. Just in time to bring his good Fenway hitting back for the competition.

JBJ to the Blue Jays. Just in time to bring his good Fenway hitting back for the competition. Smart. They know how to upgrade their defense when they have a late inning lead. Let's guess that the Jays will be smart enough not to start him. In a way this is kind of what Houston did. Get CF late inning defense which Marisnick did while moving Springer over to a corner. That's probably how it's going to play out in Toronto. Funny how they think they can make their roster more functional with JBJ. I'm glad he'll get a chance to play in the post-season, even if it's for late inning defense.

After this season, JBJ should strongly consider converting to a relief pitcher. All he needs is two pitches, and he seems athletic enough to pick it up. If he's nowhere in 2 years he has made a lot of cash and can plan next steps for his life and his family.

Hope it works out for him. If the Blue Jays wins the World Series, I think JBJ should get a nice modest duck boat ride.

Are Sox still obligated to pay his option in2023 if Toronto doesn’t pick it up?

What does releasing Bradley do for helping Boston get under the tax? And, as another poster just asked, is Boston in any still on the hook for a 2023 option? Gosh, it just seems like Boston was thisclose to getting under the tax.

I wonder if this was one of those scenarios where JBJ was told he would get decreased playing time down the stretch with Kiké coming back and they want to maximize their look at Duran ROS. Then JBJ quietly asked for his release to pursue another opportunity and the team obliged the veteran. He latched onto Toronto pretty quickly for a guy with a .530 OPS in his last 700+ plate appearances...

It might explain the timing of the move with Refsnyder still inactive.
