Chris Sale Breaks Wrist Riding Bike

Post by redsox04071318champs on Aug 10, 2022 16:02:47 GMT -5
I know it's apples and oranges but I regret them signing Matt Young (my preference was to re-sign Mike Boddicker) a helluva lot more than I regret them signing David Price. Wished they hadn't put themselves in the situation to sign Price and ultimately Chris Sale because of their failure to extend Jon Lester, but at least that 2018 flag flies forever and David Price did have a lot to do with that. I know that gets into the argument of judging a free agent signing in a vacuum versus the "they won a championship" argument which I'm trying to avoid, but have trouble doing so because of the way it colors my perception. I mean in a vaccuum the Price signing wasn't great, but was I complaining about during the 2018 World Series? Hell no. Same thing with Foulke in 2004 and Lackey and Victorino in 2013. They weren't bit parts of a championship. They were very positive contributors at a time that mattered a lot. You can make the argument that if they were better in the other years there possibly could have been more World Series, but at the end of the day I can only really go by what happened instead of going down the rabbithole of theoretical could have beens. It’s just funny to compare Matt Young’s contract with Price’s. Young was signed for 3years and $6.35m. I know it was 30 years ago, but it’s still comical. In those days, the Red Sox ONLY seemed to get washed-up free agents to come to Boston: Jack Clark, Frank Viola, Canseco, Andre Dawson, Steve Avery, Ramon Martinez and probably a bunch more that I’m not thinking of. It doesn’t seem like they really started getting it right until they signed Manny and then Damon. I was excited when the Sox signed Frank Viola. He's largely forgotten, but he was great with Twins and pitched well with the Mets. I was hoping it would be like Clemens and Hurst but it didnt quite work out that way even though Viola did give them 2 solid seasons before his arm just gave out suddenly. Canseco was a trade. They got him fir Otis Nixon. He gave them 2 good seasons but clashed with Duquette. Dawson was washed up. They signed him after Kirby Puckett opted to go back to Minnesota. The Red Sox were suffering from a well deserved reputation as being a place African Americans would not want to sign and Lou Gorman, to his credit, was trying to change that perception, and when Puckett fell through he signed Dawson, who was on his last legs as a player. Steve Avery was such a disappointment. I thought he was up there will the Big 3 in Atlanta, but his stuff wasnt as good and he got hurt and he was a poor replacement for Clemens' spot in the rotation when he left. I remember he was a focal point between Duquette and Jumy William's when Williams gave Avery a final start in the meaningless 1997 season that Duquette didn't want him to have because it triggered his 1998 option. He pitched better in 1998 but it can only be charitably described as serviceable. He was a big name reclamation project in a way as was Ramon Martinez who was great with the Dodgers and promising with the Sox in 1999 down the stretch. He even pitched well in an elimination game against Cleveland in the ALDS that Pedro started in. Then for some reason he fell completely apart in 2000. It wasn't quite the success that another reclamation project had for the Sox around that time, Bret Saberhagen, who gave them two good seasons in 1998 and 1999 before his arm gave out for good. I guess Sale is entering that reclamation project status...except for the huge salary. Here's hoping he does as well as the greatest Red Sox pitching reclamation project of all time, Luis Tiant.

I'm as disappointed as the next guy in the ROI we've gotten on Sale, but Mazz is just a blowhard looking for attention. How does her surmise he broke it otherwise? Masterbating? Playing to much Call of Duty? Sale doesn't strike me as the kind of guy who would fake an injury, all other concerns I have about him aside, he wants to pitch. Even a healthy Sale can't right the listing on this ship, everyone's looking for an exit, and everyone in the media is looking for someone to finger (the blame, get your mind out of the gutter). It's not that he's faking, but anything that could potentially hurt his income or reputation would make sense to lie about. The Jeff Kent lie was when he fell off his car while washing it, when instead he fell off an ATV and broke his wrist. I only find this level of gossip interesting (if it were Felger or Adam Jones I'd ignore it), but he is someone who is plugged in a bit since he calls games on NESN and has to face these guys. Still, probably nothing more than hot air, but just a footnote. Agreed, I just never was a fan of Mazz, his voice is like nails on a chalkboard for me, like hearing a John Sterling HR call. Plugged in or not, Mazz likes to make himself as much of the story as the actual story. I guess it goes with the territory, no one wants a homer per say, but I'd prefer a happy medium.

Mazz and the Matt McCarthy are peddling the narrative that Sale likely lying. Bringing up the mysterious foot injury with the White Sox and that this bike accident supposedly happened around BC in the middle of the day and no one noticed the tall, lanky professional athlete flying off their bike and breaking their wrist, in Boston, and no one noticed. They then brought up the history of players lying, such as Jeff Kent. It's just interesting for Mazz to be lobbing this theory when he's around this team. He's EMPLOYED by this team. It's shameful he says it & it's more shameful the Red Sox employ him.

I'd rather he get away with blind accusations than be told he can only speak positively.

Mazz used to be a reporter for a long time and is an employee of the team, completely different scenario here than if it was Felger or any of those other guys. Players have been lying about injuries since the beginning of time. Sale could also stand to lose a lot of money if its proven that he did something stupid like punch a wall that resulted in breaking his wrist. I personally think he's full of shit and he probably punched a wall or something given his temperament. Team finds out they'll move to void his contract. Sale isn't Fernando Tatis Jr. At least with him being a dumbass and lying to the team there was zero chance they would void that contract. What has Sale shown in the past to have people here give him the benefit of the doubt?

What has Sale shown in the past to have people here give him the benefit of the doubt? Just to play devils advocate to the punch wall theory, he's a lefty. At least in my personal experience the few times in my life I've gotten angry enough to do something stupid like punch a wall I used my dominant hand since it's a reflex type of thing and that's just where the brain goes. That obviously doesn't mean he couldn't have still done that but I find it unlikely personally. Also I would find them even thinking about voiding his contract a very stupid thing to do, other players are going to look at it and say well why the hell would I want to sign with them if this is how they treat their players. It's extremely rare for a team to move to void a contract, just look at a few years ago when the Mad-Bum hurt himself riding a dirt bike. The Giants didn't look to void his deal, probably because they knew it'd be a bad look. I guess you could say Mad-Bum had built up a lot more goodwill with the Giants and their fans than Sale has with the Sox but ya I wouldn't hold your breath they're going to attempt to void the rest of his deal.

Is it too much to ask a member of the tv broadcast team to NOT SMEAR the reputation of one of the team's players without irrefutable, double-sourced information (in which case you're not smearing, you're reporting)?

Doesn't it make it more interesting if the team isn't telling him to say, "stop"? I also heard there was something in the Globe, but not sure what and don't have a membership. It'd be interesting if they had a similar take (could have been just about how good he looked and how disappointed the team is) since the Globe is owned by John Henry.

If Chris Sale was doing something reckless and injured himself you don’t think the Red Sox would love that as an excuse and want to void the rest of his contract?

I said it in a previous post higher up but I'll say it again, even if Sale was doing something extremely reckless that caused him to break his wrist (in a lost season where he probably wasn't coming back anyway) they aren't going to look to set the precedence of voiding a contract. Other players are going to look at that and think I'm not signing there if they're going to treat their players like that. It quite honestly doesn't happen, I mean really how many absolutely ridiculous injuries have we seen and teams didn't try and void the contract?
I just don't think under just about any circumstance they would look to void the contract, it would not be a good look for the organization.

"Can't prove he didn't punch a wall - plus, he has expressed emotions in the past." Hmm, great points, I'll really have to sit and think about this one.

We live in a crazy world. You can't just make stuff up about people. Ok you can and people do but you really shouldn't. There is no evidence Chris Sale lied about how he was injured. Or that he's ever lied to the Red Sox before. Sale wants to pitch that should be obvious. I think he might be made of glass but that isn't his fault.

Is there anything else to talk about with this team? Maybe we can discuss how bad Plawecki is for the 100th time or how Bloom botched the deadline until the end March. I do think how he broke it is kind of important and honestly, it kind of shows how the organization feels about him at this point and if he did lie, there's merit to get out of some of that albatross that is his contract, such is why he'd lie.

As a side note, what a fall for this fella. Back with the White Sox, he was probably the game's best value stud starter... signed to a totally team-friendly deal. And now...

I'm in the place where I don't really care how he broke his wrist. In the pantheon of baseball history there have been several pretty embarrassing injuries that players tried to cover up the root cause. I don't think he is lying, but honestly, I don't think his return to this team has any impact on the landfill fire that is this team's play since June. Even if he recovered and came back, by the time he did this team would be so far back it wouldn't even be worth it for him to waste whatever ammunition he has left in his arm.
Apathy has set in for me. Just like it did after initially caring about rampant steroid and stimulant use in MLB. With so much in all of our lives outside of baseball (most of our escapes from reality) I just want to be entertained. I want my escape from reality back. There's enough things for me to be pissed off in general any time I turn on the tele, or venture out into public, and I hate reality TV, please lets not make baseball into another bad reality television show.
